Josef Gaard is a relative newcomer to the techno scene, releasing his first EP on the Berlin-based label This Ain't Music in December of 2012. Since then he has worked with multiple labels, releasing both a remix and another EP on Stephan Panev's new Komponenti label. His music has been charted by the likes of Cio D'or and his track "Chariot" was named one of the best dub techno tracks of 2012 by dubtechnoblog.com. His compositions range from ambient techno to noise and industrial, but always maintain the same attention to detail and meticulous sound design.

5 Questions with Josef Gaard:

1. Tell us, who is Josef Gaard; what were your early influences, and how did it all begin? 

I've been making music nearly my entire life - I started on piano when I was very young and then moved on to study various styles of percussion up through college. My parents are both classical musicians so I grew up listening to a lot of orchestral music. I had a pretty heavy metal/industrial phase for a while and then eventually become more interested in electronic music. However some of my biggest influences are drone artists - Celer and Stars of the Lid being two huge ones. The kind of immersion drone music lends itself to has always really interested and influenced me. 

2. Outside of the music itself, what do you feel drives your production and dj-ing stylistically? 

I've always felt that music is a reflection of consciousness and this concept certainly drives me stylistically in many ways. When I mix two records together I don't view it as simply blending two pieces of audio, but rather as combining the blood, sweat, and tears of two different producers in a way that creates new musical pathways and thereby bridges a gap between their consciousness. It may sound like a bunch of hippie nonsense, but the inherent ability that techno has to connect and transcend these gaps is a huge part of why I love it and choose it as my medium. 

3. What does the future currently hold for your productions? 

I am currently putting the finishing touches on a new release I have been working on for quite some time. If everything goes as planned it should be out on vinyl sometime either this year or early next year. I am very excited to share it as well as begin to work on a live set. 

4. You, somewhat, recently reloaded to Washington. What was the reasoning behind it and how are you liking it here? 

I moved up here to pursue studies in sustainable agriculture which has been going really well. The pacific northwest offers a lot in terms of natural beauty so the process of moving up here and being surrounded by the unique landscape has certainly had a huge affect on my music. Also the music scene in Seattle, while relatively small, is quite excellent and has provided plenty of inspiration. 

5. Outside of music, what other things do you spend your time on? 

I am currently working on two farms as well as managing my own plot of land so that has been taking up a lot of my time. I spend pretty much all of my free time making music or DJing, but I do try to read and exercise as much as possible. The combination of farm work and DJing has been an interesting one considering they are two completely different lifestyles, but I have come to really enjoy the juxtaposition.

Joachim Spieth is a long time DJ, producer and label boss of Affin. Whether through the music he produces himself, or the productions he releases on his own imprint, the sounds always operate in their own little pockets away from the norm. It all started with ‘Abi 99’ – one of the earliest 12”s Cologne stable Kompakt ever released. At the time it was supported by legendary UK radio DJ John Peel and, in turn, was followed up with more huge early success in the form of ‘Under Pressure’, a split single EP on Speicher with Michael Mayer. In the years since, there have been tracks licensed to The Orb’s Back to Mine compilation, appearances on labels like Paso, Traum Schallplatten and Tongut and a steady stream of remixes for the likes of Michael Mayer, Einmusik and Guy J, all of which have blurred the lines between techno, minimal and house music in the producers own unique way. Chief amongst Spieth’s achievements are those of his wide-ranging label, Affin. As well as hosting a regular radio show of the same name on Proton and label nights at clubs across Europe, the imprint has clocked up 150 releases, spawned various Selected compilations (including one recently to celebrate its centenary release) and has championed music from artists like Arnaud Le Texier, Samuel L Session, Gez Varley, Truncate, Reggy van Oers and so many more.
 Most recently, the six-year-old outlet has started Affin LTD, a sub-label putting music out on vinyl, with great looking and sounding results. It’s no wonder, then, that revered contemporary DJs like Derrick May, Ben Sims and Laurent Garnier regularly include Affin records in their sets around the world. 
Spieth himself plays a range of top European clubs on a regular basis, impressing crowds at respected venues like Culture Box, Denmark, Tresor, Berlin, Hive Zurich in Switzerland, Kater Holzig in Berlin, and many other European hotspots with his deft blend of groove, melody and atmosphere. His latest vinyl EP release ‘Sensual’ might just be his greatest to date, with the likes of Scuba playing it in his Essential Mix, Depeche Mode’s Martin L Gore (a pop hero for Spieth) charting it on Beatport, Juan Atkins dropping it during his live Beatport stream and many other accolades across the board.

5 Questions:

1. How did you find your way into electronic music?

I was touched by music since i was a child. Got a lot of influences while listening music on the radio. As a teenager is was addicted to instrumental Hip Hop, the bridge finally was built by the HEADZ compilation on UK­based Mo Wax label. After i got into Warp Records etc...

2. Now that you have been actively releasing records for 15 years, how do you feel your process has changed?

I like to experiment with sounds. I mainly work with samples since i started to build up my own tunes. Back in the days it was more expensive to get a proper setup, nowadays you can find a lot of awesome software plug­ins doing a great job. Actually i like to mix hardware / software.

3. Your label, Affin, has been steadily releasing quality techno and house for about 7 years. What was your decision to start the label and how do you curate it?

I got some good demo stuff from unknow ppl around. Moreover, i wanted to build something to feel home. Working with labels sometimes isn’t easy if they decide to change their style... So you’re always relying on decisions from others. As i worked with Kompakt, Paso Music and some other labels for years i thought it was just on time to decide on my own what should be released. In the begin i wanted to release “all” music i like but this changed in the last 1 ­ 2 years. Now we’re focussed on techno.

4. What are some of your favorite tracks at the moment?

Never easy to name just a few as i always like so many tunes :­) Dustin Zahn’s “Against The Grain” on his new Drumcode Album is ace. “Hypnopaedia” from Ness on Planet Rhythm is awesome! Not to forget Keith Carnal’s “Prospect” on my own label Affin, ha ha.

5. Any closing thoughts on upcoming releases, label work, etc ?

Ah yes, for sure. I’m very excited about my upcoming 12” Aidan (with rmxs from Samuel L Session & Arnaud Le Texier). Proper techno package... Arnaud also will deliver his 2nd 12” before summer ( with amazing Unam Zetineb rmx) and some more projects are already set up. I’m really happy to see how things developing in the last time regarding Affin.

Sone is Seattle based DJ and Producer Brian Sonnleitner. His first exploits into music was being immersed in the underground punk scene growing up in Wisconsin during the 90′s. Then late one August evening, after witnessing Chris Liberator melt his mind, Brian shifted gears into pursuing his passion for techno full time. Sone is now a DJ of over a decade, his sets are stuffed full of tension ranging between the deep and dark to heavy big room sounds but, without fail, maintaining the element of the dance floor. While keeping his philosophy of “the best techno is simple and effective”.

2008 brought Brian into the realm of production with his tracks exploring the bigger and darker side of techno. His original productions and remixes appear on his home label, From 0-1, which he runs with long time friend and cohort Milkplant, Slant Records, Audio Autopsy, Rheostatus, and Subspec to name a few. His remix contest for the track “Recovery Mode”, released on From 0-1, received far reaching interest and support with submissions coming in from all over North America and Europe. One of Seattle’s brightest up-and-comers, the years ahead will surely see his impact on the Northwest and beyond.

Aaaah finally.

In a period where I was dangerously close to losing all interest in the techno scene. When I really start questioning why and for what reason I have been doing this. Amongst all the self-indulgence, commercially obsessed promoters, "exclusive" clubs and elitist underground nonsense attitudes, I didn't expect looking at secondnature's website to change my mood so much.

Modest, genuine and above all represents, to me at least, the fundamental reason behind this type of music. A real interest to just get the music to the people. Josef Gaard was my route to discovering secondnature and his mix was equally open and full of interest. Easily my favourite of the podcasts I have released in recent times and did enough to knock me back on track, with some really inventive tracks full of depths and character. I seriously recommend checking this and the whole of secondnature out.

Top stuff.

Last Spring of 2016 Yo Yo Yoga was invited to bring our crew to present at Lightening in a Bottle (LIB). With David Bowie's recent passing, we decided to create a Bowie tribute yoga session and got the green light to take our event to Northern California for the festival. Of course that meant Recess had to put together a yoga DJ set that paid homage to one of the most prolific cultural and musical icons of our time. No small task for someone that has a deep appreciation for not just the Thin White Duke, but also the yoga mat and all that can be learned about ourselves from both. He couldn't just dig up a bunch of favorite Bowie tracks and call it good. The intention here was to create a live DJ mix that catered to a 60+ minute vinyasa flow. After taking this event to LIB, Portland's Playground Park party and the Dirtybird Campout, we finally brought the tribute home to Seattle's Fred Wildlife Refuge. To bring this project to a close on David Bowie's 70th birthday couldn't have been more perfect. And now that we've finally said our goodbyes, we're happy to share this recording with you all. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed presenting this yoga project up and down the West coast. 

We are all made of stardust! RIP David Bowie.

Mossmoss (aka Mattie Bowen) is a Scottish born dj and producer with an intense interest in explorative music. With a keen ear and eye for detail, he is an artist by nature. His wandering sets paint landscapes of light and dark patterns, textures, and strange melody, heavily relying on atmosphere and tension. Mattie's inspiration draws from the organic details of existence, the tiny pieces most overlook in exchange for the big-picture rush of an ever changing modern world. His mind deeply set to explore these facets and to share his exploration in all forms to those that might look and listen. Mossmoss currently resides San Francisco and draws on The City and its colorful nightlife for constant immersive inspiration.

US based artist, Milkplant (Justin William Pennell) is originally from Milwaukee,Wisconsin; but has lived in Oakland, California since 2010.  He relocated to the West Coast in 2004, lived in Seattle for six years, and started the internationally recognized Techno label and artist collective, From 0-1; with fellow artist, Sone.  Schooled in the Midwest and developed on the West Coast, his work encompasses over 30 years of combined DJ/production experience, and 9 years of record label operations.

In autumn 2014 he released 'Time Dilation', a four track 12" EP on From 0-1.  Charted by Gary Beck, Paul Mac, and Ben Sims at #2, #1, and #26 in their November 2014 Juno charts, this was a turning point for him.  Since then he has released on Planet Rhythm, Wall Music, Dark Net, Etichetta Nera, From 0-1, and Excise.  His productions have drawn critical acclaim from many notable artists; showing up in mixes and charts by Ben Sims, Cari Lekebusch, Jerome Sydenham, Bryan Zentz, Joachim Spieth, Tommy Four Seven, Submerge, Tadeo, Mattias Fridell, Mr. Jones, Electric Indigo, David Meiser, Samuli Kemppi, Arnaud Le Texier, Abstract Division, DJ T-1000, and many others.

As a DJ he can be found playing a combination of vinyl and CDJs.  He has played in various cities across the US, most notably in Detroit at the Blank Code - Droid Interface/Scene party for Movement 2016.  His mixes have been featured on Droid's D-Node podcast, the Warsaw Torture Boyz podcast, Blank Code podcast, Drone podcast, and Error Sessions. Komprezzor is not simply another gimmick or project trying to reach for the sky, fame or
mainstream, in the contrary he prefers to stay hidden in the darkest corner of that old abandoned
factory were you once wondered if you even had the guts to step in. The sounds and elements of
his live sets are dark and dirty as if they had been extracted from a piece of literature by Edgar
Alan Poe. Full of white noises and atmospheric riffs the percussive elements are extracted from
classic drum machines; such as the legendary 808, 909, and 303 that slowly morph in to a
hypnotic rhythm. Along with his live sets the Dj sets are also full of some of the dirtiest and darkest
heart pounding Techno, no top 40 will ever make an appearance on his track list, interacting with
up to 4 decks running at the same time and a few drum machines it will make you wonder if a
third arm was present at the time.


2016 has been a game changer for Komprezzor traveling with his modular set up the creativity
flows from beginning to end no presets or patters are preprogrammed before the machines are
turned on, in a way he is merely a medium or translator to the cry of the machines, multiple synth
voices and drum machines interlacing into a one of a kind sound creating and stitching each
element form scratch right on front of the audience eye’s, the result is a fully improvised Techno
mayhem.

Sone is Seattle, Washington based DJ and producer Brian Sonnleitner. His first exploits into live music was being immersed in the underground punk scene in Wisconsin during the mid/late 90's. Fast forward to now, while keeping the same energy and ethos of his early experiences, Brian is a DJ of well over a decade with his sets trending towards the driving and tracky side of techno.

2008 brought Sone into the realm of production with his music exploring a stripped down but heavy sound. His original productions and remixes have received support from Ben Sims, Reggy van Oers, Joachim Spieth, Juho Kusti, TWR72, Soolee, and many others.  His tracks appear on his home label, From 0-1, which he runs with long time friend Milkplant; while surfacing on other labels such as Android Muziq,  Webuildmachines, Rheostatus, and Darknet.

  Brooklyn native John Massey has been attempting to damage eardrums for almost 20 years.  A child of the 80s, John transplanted to Los Angeles as a teen.  There he discovered an emerging underground dance scene and was infected with an interest in electronic music.  John soon founded Sound Rehab Productions, connected with influential local promoters and artists such as Omar Ojeda (Darius Aleksander), Robin Porter, Drumcell, Ron-D-Core, Raiz (Acid Circus) and began coordinating techno events and working the DJ circuit throughout the southern California area.  Today John resides in Seattle.
  John is the kind of unassuming artists that earns respect rather than demands it, keeping his head down and focusing on his craft, trusting his instincts to keep the dance floor moving.  His current set consists of a live/dj hybrid that enables John to creatively blend a wide variety of techno, house, minimal and experimental sounds.  As a producer John tackles a variety of sounds ranging from his previous hip hop efforts under Dysposable Heroes, to his recent techno projects under his own name and previously as Indispensable Villains.  Heʼs affiliated with Seattleʼs From 0-1, a conceptual label which he represents in his various endeavors.  Heʼs released on various labels such as HardSignal, Subspec, From 0-1, Subsensory and his own Sound Rehab Recordings.  No matter the genre he has always enjoyed working with various artists giving him the opportunity to make new friends and take in new influences.  With several new projects on horizon 2018 looks to be a productive year for John so keep look out...

Josef Gaard (@josefgaard) is a project focused on music as a conduit. Originally based in the Seattle area and now settled in Berlin, he has been sharing his salient sound through productions and performances for years. With a 12" coming up on @kalawila ’s Mountain Explosion Device, he is continuing to push his music forward with a distinct touch. This mix showcases the different edges of his musical sphere, from nordic house to electro to techno and back again.

This Thursday 2 August he plays at OHM alongside the special live debut of Acronym (@4cr0nym) & @kali-malone.

Originally based in the Seattle area and now living in Berlin, Josef has been sharing his salient sound through productions and performances for years. His penchant for both ambient music and dance-floor oriented styles has landed him at some of the best venues across Europe. His recent record, "2929" on Mountain Explosion Device saw him working with artists such as @Kalawila and @Dorisburg and gained international acclaim.

As usual, we asked Josef to share a few words to describe his approach to our invitation:

"My approach to this mix was very simple. I generally tend to want to build into a more peak time mood at some point while mixing, so my goal here was to practice restraint and working with a longer arc instead. I enjoy mixes that achieve this so I thought it was my turn to try something suited for both active and passive listening."

Little side note: Josef decided to release this mix with the artwork curated by his friend Oscar Rohleder instead of using the usual press picture.
