It pays to be vulnerable, they say it all the time. They say it enough to be true. Nonetheless, the old world remains, and one should pick their moments. Vulnerability is a two-way street, and there are often roadworks, the smell of tar and the ear-splitting assault of drills, sensory tedium outside the dry cleaners, opposite the school and adjacent to the train station. They say there’s ample free parking, but when you get there, there’s only so much space to take.

Berlin-based label Hot Concept continues an unpredictable journey with a new artist introducing themselves to the roster, loket. First emerging via their own cult mix for the Deep Mind Music series, their debut full release, out digitally now and on limited-edition tape soon, taps three original productions that blend live saxophone modulation with influences within the ambient, trance and hardcore continuum.

Accompanying this hugely original trio are two remixes from London’s Jay Duncan, each taking on a radically different tempo. While the ‘Spirit of Sabre’ version zones in on psychedelic chug, the ‘Infinity Mix’ premiering here today ramps up the energy but loses none of the detail.

Lotus Wash drops his debut album on LBD Sounds, bringing a whole load of fresh material which came out from his experience as a session musician, and performing his experimental live sets around the Czech Republic. He connects the dots between classically trained musician and modular synth-head, working in Prague’s DIY shop and creative community Noise Kitchen. The album spans across 6 original tracks of pure analogue bliss and live ideas, alongside three remixes from his closest allies, local producers Oliver Torr, Vision of 1994, and Hrtl.

The Field Theory was created during a period of deep fascination with quantum physics, with the tracks being conceptually and aesthetically inspired by some of its phenomena. Acoustically, it’s mostly a slow and dark affair, with Lotus Wash only letting the light in very briefly when the sun is young (Magnetic Moment), keeping the shutter firmly closed for the rest of the record. His music does not rely on banging beats to drive it, instead letting intense grooves do the job from deep underground, just like on earth-shattering album opener Vacuum Fluctuation. He masters his craft of building atmosphere, a skill learnt during multiple collaborations with various Czech theatres. Of course, he lets the steam out occasionally, and always with devastating effect (Higgs Field, Casimir Force), but mostly choses to keep it capped, humming and hissing. When the sky clears, he opts for a minimalistic and hypnotic approach, only to disturb this peace with a killer bassline in one of the album’s highlights – Spooky Action At A Distance – later re-imagined and re-electrified by Oliver Torr. Standard Model is anything but your standard techno, while Hrtl’s remix of Magic Moment flirts with techno too, but on a dubbier and brighter side. Bringing the album to a close is Vision of 1994’s downtempo take on the same track, finally letting you breathe out.

Marking it as the second release on Rose’s label "Solid Wood", Dreams builds upon the label’s ethos, rooted in honest yet uncompromising music, with tracks that range from driving dub techno in "Unseen Realms," burning IDM breaks ("Renaissance"), ascending melodic techno house ("Universe"), and an experimental acid 2-stepper in the closer, "Hierophant."

Since the release of his debut EP in 2020, Junus Orca has had releases on labels such as NZ’s own Echo Train Records, and collaborations like the eerie 'I Did It All' with 03 OG Kamandi.

The artist has shown extreme versatility among their releases from electrifying harsh noise, through to ambient soundscapes, and dub-tinged techno dance floor movements. Junus Orca demonstrates their intention to continue down this path of sonic diversity through recent crushing-industrial banger 'Unnamed System' with fellow Ōtautahi artist Social Sport, juxtaposing their forthcoming release with soft synth siren Instant Fantasy for FIS’s eco label Saplings, due to drop later in 2023.

Junus Orca is now here to share the new record ‘A True Stream’; releasing on Aotearoa label Club Unique late February 2023.

The record is a true stream of the artist's consciousness; undefined, raw, reflective and melancholic. Lead single ‘PB Possum (These Thoughts Are My Own)’; is a clear example of exactly this with its minimal, clicky percussive notes placed delicately on a pillow of ethereal synthesis allowing the computer generated vocal transmission to take center stage. This emotive transmission takes listeners into the depths of the artist's brain; hypnotizing them with its monotone delivery, then leading them down a path of chaotic yet comforting thoughts.

‘A True Stream’ is a truly unique and beautifully themed 7 track offering, leaving itself open for interpretation to find your own narrative within.

After a long hiatus our unsigned series is back. Producers who have appeared on the series so far have been approached by labels and subsequently had material released by them after we helped shed some light on the new talents. We hope we’re able to do the same with the next one in the bunch, coming from Melbourne's @darcykhalid. 

Get to know a little about him below:

Hey, I’m Darcy Khalid.

I’ve been producing music for about five years and DJing and playing piano for a little longer. Since I moved to Melbourne in 2016, I’ve been producing music with at least the vague intention to release it publicly. I wanted to wait until I felt I had a sound that was my own, and I guess that time has come.

My Unsigned track is from my debut EP. The record features three quite different tracks, including elements of ambience, techno, drum & bass – even hints of jazz on the A1. Hakone Schoolyard is the A2, and if someone called it a broken beat ambient techno jam, I wouldn’t call them crazy.

It evolved three times over about 18 months. I made a version, got bored of it, left it alone, then repeated that process several months later. What you hear now is take three. I can be a bit ambitious with my compositions, so they’re often long and multi-sectioned. My favourite songs will change a lot, weaving between atmospheres, energy levels and tempos, often seamlessly, but occasionally with bold abruption. I tried to do both here. I hope it worked.
