‘Conscious Listening’ is a new podcast series by Pregnant Void record label that explores soundscapes born from the connection between deep ethereal music and the most advanced electronic musical experiments. This month’s Podcast chapter comes from Inhmost an ambient artist that creates deep atmospheric ambient soundscapes from the farthest reaches of space, with a few beats and basslines for good measure. There are many different ways that the biosphere affects climate. Some produce greenhouse gases and promote warming of our planet through the greenhouse effect, while others reduce the amount of greenhouse gases promoting cooling of our planet. Thereby, by trapping heat, greenhouse gases contribute to our planet's warming and the biosphere provides the necessary environmental conditions for survival. And of course, Biosphere is the moniker of one Geir Janssen, who has been a constant influence on ambient music throughout his career. Phil van Dulm and Alexander Bartels, musically known as Wanderwelle, produce electronic music that balances between the genres of ambient and experimental techno. Last year, their debut album ‘Lost in a Sea of Trees’ was released by the Canadian label Silent Season. The album’s main sources of inspiration were the rich Slavic folklore and the ancient pagan tribes that once roamed the European woodlands. The artists collected field recordings in Russian, Czech and Dutch forests. Throughout the album the ominous howling of the winds and other natural sounds play a prolific role. Within 48 hours the double LP was sold out worldwide, the repress just in a day. Wanderwelle closed their year with a 2.5 hour live set at the legendary Tresor, Berlin.

This year a new album will be released on Silent Season, which is inspired by the last years of the life of Paul Gauguin that he spent on the island of Tahiti. 'Gathering of the Ancient Spirits' tells the alternative history of his search for a land which is untouched by modern society and whose inhabitants were still dependent on the gifts of nature and connected to their ancestors.

One reason why ambient-techno of the early '90s ambient/techno releases stands out as having a strong sense of the quirkily creepy in its own particular way, is the way it uses contrasting samples of a child quaveringly saying, "We had a dream last night," followed by a rougher sample saying, "We had the same dream," giving a track like the Third planet an unsettling feeling. 

Weather it uses a good dancefloor sharpness to it even as or sneaky odd drones and samples through the mix, extraterrestrial themed, or SF samples from 2001, Blade runner, DJing this music will mostly, though, things continue on a deliciously unnerving pace throughout, gentle enough to go down easy but still just off enough to ensure you can't call this new age folderol for the rave generation.
