The break on the Underworld mix epitomizes 90s electronic music: 909 kicking, synths stuttering, keys arpeggiating, guitars playing, and vocals blending seamlessly into the sound. Sure it's only a few seconds, but that sort of summarizes that short period where electronic dance music was a really fresh genre that hadn't really developed set boundaries and where everyone was open to its possibilities. Nearly 30 years later, you can still hear the optimism in the music...

The 5th element known as space or aether is the material that fills the region of the universe beyond the terrestrial sphere. Integrating experimental techno, actual samples from deep space radioscopy (specifically recordings of pulsars), and spoken words by Dr. Frank Drake (a senior scientist with the SETI Institute).  While Project Phoenix scanned about 1,000 stars all within 200 light years, the distance away from Earth makes the travel even further to Proxima Centauri, Ophiuchi and Omega Nebula.

Drifting In Space - The Fifth Element

There is a discernible revival for the short lived ambient-house genre. This is surely a sign that the 90's are getting the retro love it deserves, and I'm all for it.  Interest for this era has never been higher in eons. Those tracks are full of space-alien references, obscure movies from the 90's, meditation lectures from gurus of that time and dreamy pads with acid leads. Most of these tracks found their way onto the shelves of many discerning listeners in the 90's thanks to a frothy mix of dubwise ambient house and melodic electronica aimed for post-club melting sessions. Planet Love (Ambient House - Chill out - Trance - Acid)

The deep, immersive echo chamber that sits at the centre of DeepChord’s signature work with Echospace may appear inspired by the genre-defining work of first-wave dub-technoists that appeared on the Chain Reaction label in the mid to late 90s. But it’s also work that’s quintessentially building upon the Detroit scene where it was born, and that divine marriage of roots and vision makes the work of Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell at once so highly considered, so timeless, and so pertinent. The distinguishing feature of the duo’s sound is its ability and willingness to stand still; whereas much of dub techno attempts to propel the listener forward in either a lover’s rock groove or the cushioned reverb of a driving beat, DeepChord’s synth-driven analog warmth trades not only in static ambience but also propulsive design. Their set at Métropolis in 2011 was nothing short of enveloping and transcendent.
