Our next deep dive for the Portals series sees a revisit to a genre of music that heavily influenced ASIP growing up. Yes, cheese-and-chords in their full glory; classic Trance music, but with a twist, of course.

Love it or hate it, I embrace classic Trance music for its brilliance of the time, and the impact it had on me (and indeed electronic music) growing up. I’ve mentioned before how the chill-out side of Trance music was one of the many avenues to open me up to more electronic ambient music. The break on the Underworld mix epitomizes 90s electronic music: 909 kicking, synths stuttering, keys arpeggiating, guitars playing, and vocals blending seamlessly into the sound. Sure it's only a few seconds, but that sort of summarizes that short period where electronic dance music was a really fresh genre that hadn't really developed set boundaries and where everyone was open to its possibilities. Nearly 30 years later, you can still hear the optimism in the music...

Dreamscape

The 5th element known as space or aether is the material that fills the region of the universe beyond the terrestrial sphere. Integrating experimental techno, actual samples from deep space radioscopy (specifically recordings of pulsars), and spoken words by Dr. Frank Drake (a senior scientist with the SETI Institute).  While Project Phoenix scanned about 1,000 stars all within 200 light years, the distance away from Earth makes the travel even further to Proxima Centauri, Ophiuchi & Omega Nebula.

Drifting In Space - The Fifth Element

This was a live set, mixed live on Radio 1 on Mary Ann Hobbes' Breezeblock show. It won the 2001 NME Award for best mix on that show, as voted for by the public. It's eclectic, energetic, and hyperactive, and the manic nature of the performance came across that night.

Welcome the 100th chapter of the Deep Electronics Podcast. 

First of all I want to thank all artists that have participated with this serie but also the artists that created the Ambient Sessions and the Showcase serie. Without your love for music, mixing, producing and more, this project wasn’t possible. And a big thank you to all listeners, followers and fans!!!

Starting in February 2013 with the idea to combine photography and deep electronic music together I never thought about it that it would come this far! I even started a netlabel on Bandcamp in the early 2014. The podcast series also involves a lot of contacts all over the globe. Finding producers and DJ’s that want to share there music. Thank you for that!
I hope for the near future that I expand the netlabel and spread more mixes

But for now I present you the 100th  chapter mixed by Deepchord. Thank you Rod for making this happen!!

Bio:

Rod Modell (a.k.a. Deepchord) is a sound-designer with 25 years involvement in electronic music and over 50 releases under various aliases and styles. Beginning with more "industrial" and "ambient" forms of sonic experimentation (working with Kim Cascone and his -then- record-label Silent, and performing with notable industrial acts such as Chris & Cosey and SPK). While attending Art School for Photography, Rod lived in Detroit's Eastern-Market area, the location of the infamous "techno boulevard", and home to Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson during that time. Submersed in the blossoming Detroit Techno scene (early 1990's), a journey from a more experimental sound into Detroit's techno-world was inevitable. Modell co-founded the Deepchord record label in Detroit during the mid-90's. Deepchord respected and admired (fellow Detroiters) Underground Resistance for their D.I.Y. attitude and independence. It was because of this respect and admiration that Deepchord declined offers from top techno labels of the time, in favor of doing it by themselves. Many consider Deepchord to be the second wave of the "Basic Channel sound", and came years before the onslaught of imitators.
