Leftfield is a British electronic music group formed in 1989. It began as the duo of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley. In January 2010 Barnes resurrected Leftfield without Daley and, after touring for a few years, finished writing new material for a third album entitled Alternative Light Source. Daley declined to be involved and is focusing upon his solo career. The duo was very influential in the evolution of electronic music in the 1990s, with Mixmag describing them as "the single most influential production team working in British dance music". As with many of their contemporaries, such as the Chemical Brothers, Leftfield was notable for their use of guest vocalists in their works. Among those involved were Toni Halliday on "Original", Johnny Rotten on "Open Up", Djum Djum on "Afro-Left", and Earl 16 and Cheshire Cat on "Release the Pressure". The term progressive house was coined to define their style, a fusion of house with dub and reggae.

In an interview with Neil Barnes and Paul Daley of the group, published in 2017 on The Skinny, Paul Daley mentioned how John Peel influenced Leftfield via dub and reggae: "Dub and reggae had been around in my life from punk gigs of the mid seventies, and listening to the John Peel late night shows of the late seventies – it had a big influence on a lot of the feel of Leftism."

Dubfield - Leftfield in Dub

Dub techno is sometimes produced with vocals resulting in surprinsingly good results more than often. I ve selected 25 tracks which features vocalists (and some vocal samples) like Paul St-Hilaire and Benji. This is slowly meandering spacedub with deep, peaceful and dreamy lush ambient pads and dubby basslines. Though the old Rhythm & Sound influence is still clear—especially on the track Child was I—but what these producers are making truly feels fresh.

Cepheid Dreams is a star collapsing and expanding in sound. It begins with faint pulses, then swells into a dense, shimmering storm of noise and melody—an audio supernova that blurs glitch, drone, and cosmic rhythm. The track is both dreamlike and relentless, echoing the light curves of Cepheid stars as they throb across the galaxy.

While also drawing on ambient and chillout elements, ambient-techno would be associated with labels such as Warp, R&S, Apollo & GPR. Releases focused more on albums than 12-inches. The genre also departed from dance-oriented sound heard at raves and instead saw popularity as a form of electronic listening music.

Selected Ambient - Techno Works (1990 - 2020)

Music curator and a selector. Avid record collector (cd's and vinyls) and a mixologist since the late 1990's. Radio show host from 2000 to 2009. Resident DJ from 2002 to 2012. Since the 1990's, I spend upwards to 50 to 60 hours a week listening to new releases or older music. Every mix is a curation process of several months and often more than a year (especially dub techno & ambient)
