Hailing from Katowice, Poland, and active since the late ’90s, Aphreme has built a reputation for soulful, groove-rich house shaped by influences from Chicago, Detroit, funk, jazz, and R&B. Hugo Gerani’s Esplore EP advances the producer’s freewheeling and supercasual house sound under this particular alias. It is true ‘club music’ in its constant allusion to social interactions and environs, with all the spice and intrigue of chance encounters and missed connections. The showstopper is ‘She’s Lying (Roe St On the Fone Mix)’, which, true to its name, channels the boisterous and insouciant late night activity its namesake is known for. A perfectly broiled and basted club tune and a regional classic. Elsewhere, the producer exhibits the godshot melody and low-end polish fans are familiar with from 2015 hit ‘Freeze Action (Desire)’. ‘Esplore, Liek Music!’ and its shorter companion are organic and effusive, blinking with sensorial curiosities and vocal suggestions. ‘Take You No Bro’ borrows elements from longform halcyon Scandinavian techno, stark and bright like the desert at dawn, and never losing focus for its almost ten minute run.

YAM Recordings return with the second instalment of their You And Music compilation series, this time compiled by YAM fam Hollick & Z Lovecraft.

On B2, upcoming breakbeat talent, LT, takes the helm with ‘Gale Force’. Hailing from the Peak District, LT makes work of deep vocal pads, 606 touches and a killer bass line.

The latest capsule collection from pensive Vancouver visionist Zefan Sramek aka Precipitation presents a more binary take on overcast  house and half-light ambience, split between a rhythmic “earth”  side  and a smeared cirrus “sky” side. Tracked live to tape and padded with  Pacific Northwest field recordings of rainy forests and wet meadows,  the pieces soar, sink, and spiral like small birds blown by the wind,  isolated and adrift.  Past cuts for Ville Nouvelle (in the duo Aquatic  Language) and Jungle Gym have shown Sramek’s versatility with  vignette  melody and soft-focus atmospherics but Earth / Skydistills  them even further, into a muted, melancholic expanse of elemental  conditions and emotive hypnosis.

We at Bolting Bits keenly anticipate every release from X-Kalay, a label outputting varied strands of house, techno, breakbeat sounds, electro and more. Recurring themes of music from the London label are gritty drums and acid-or-almost-acid textures, wrapped up in energetic dance floor material suitable for 1-3am peak-time club nights. So we’re unsurprised, in the best possible way, about their latest release.

Today we’re premiering Rest Assured, the B1 track from LT’s debut EP on label. The three track record certainly has a particular sound, an original style. All three tracks flow smoothly between sections of almost only drums and bass into long stretches of uplifting and brighter pads and chords. The result is that sweet spot between change and continuity.

Rest Assured is the slowest and our favourite of the three tracks. Heavy breakbeat rhythms pop up sporadically throughout the song, sometimes intersecting with long, drawn out pads. Electricsounding percussion is another nice feature. If that’s hard to picture, that’s because it’s hard to describe. Let’s go with something like high-pitched tom drums if they spoke robot? The safest bet is to check it out for yourself.

The A1 track, Sputnik (B.S.S.), on the other hand, is faster and more energetic. There’s a similar dynamic between breakbeats and pads, but the vibe is, unmistakably, designed for a warmed-up dance floor. B2 and the title track of the EP, Staminize, sits somewhere between the other two. It’s powerful without being forceful or abrasive and could feasibly be weaved into a set in the first or latter half of a night.

Staminize drops today, January 14. So, especially you crate diggers, do yourselves a favour and get on this one early.

PREMIERE: LT - Rest Assured

Good news! Pacific Rhythm is once again connecting game with one of Toronto's most promising young duos, Active Surplus. Active Surplus is the collaborative project from Evan Vincent (AKA Emissive) and Ian Syrett, who also appear on this past winter's fourth volume of Rhythms Of The Pacific.

Their new self-titled EP is their love letter to the house music sound that first sprouted from the West Coast. It's laid-back, groovy and touched with lovely instrumentation, like the plucked strings on "Meera," a heartfelt tribute to a loved one. "Meera" and the billowing groove of "Ambrosia" might remind you of early Pacific Rhythm releases, with dainty arrangements and chords that waft across the rhythm section.

But Active Surplus put their own spin on things. The EP was heavily inspired by the stuttering drum patterns of Baltimore club, which undergird each track in subtle but noticeable ways, making the grooves that much skippier and slippier. "Yeye" calls to mind the feeling of early Walt J material and delivers a devastating earworm that will stick with you long after the lights have come on at the end of a late night Dance Opportunity, while the looped woodwinds and cool-blue keyboards offer a sweet melodic hook on the irresistible "One Beyond." There's a confident, naturalistic quality to these rippling grooves and silky sounds, which the duo credit to an obsession with water. After all, in their words, "we might not live by the ocean, but we're all H20 on the inside."

"Portland producer Hunter Thompson's latest LP offering as Akasha System is both a distillation of and divergence from his elegantly illusory eco-tronica. Inspired by extensive desert treks up and down the west coast, the album's nine tracks sway and shimmer like horizon line mirages, enigmas of motion and distance, wavy and widescreen: Geomind.

Thompson cites scenes of “desolate terrain, spectrum sunrises, and strange sightings in the vastness of the sky” as mood board reference points, which translate in the album's spaciousness and surreality, sculpting glassy synthetic currents into rhythmic voyages of futurist melancholy. Each song surfs its own strain of shadowy syncopated percussion, sidewinding beneath latticeworks of Kalimba, harp, and flute, flickering between dance music and dreamscape, and lingering at the threshold where one becomes the other."
