Remixer extraordinaire Eric Kupper takes a set of epic, lost recordings from 1982, that feature the cream of the crop session musicians behind the soulful Sound of Philadelphia - Earl Young (drums), Ronnie Baker (bass), Norman Harris (guitar), Lenny Pakula (organ), Larry Washington (percussion), Vince Montana, Jr. (vibes, keyboards), John Bonnie (saxophone) – along with powerhouse vocalists Joe Freeman, David Simmons, Bobby Love and Ron Tyson, and lovingly applies his own modern sheen, spinning them into ear candy for today’s listener as well as those who were there from the very beginning. 2020 will be remembered as the year that the entire world was on lockdown, with almost the whole population locked up in their houses, producers have seen in their studios the best way to escape this tragic situation. MPC’s, Drum Machines and Synthesizers have been (and still are) like time machines that along with their creativity have built new dimensions far away from the currently reality and where they have found their own personal freedom.
MM Discos introducing you this compilation where most of the tracks were created during this hard times of Covid-19, and that joins homies and forthcoming featured artists to the label along with some well respected artists from the downbeat-balearica scene. An amazing trip to a “not-forbidden” paradise created from the home studio.
Starting with a small ambient appetizer signed by “Modern Obscure Music” capo Pedro Vian, the album dares to explore different styles, turning more tropical with the works from Rompante and Document Swell to something more floor oriented with the tracks from LuKKas and the one from Da Silva, one of the thinking heads of MM Discos.
Barcelona’s based producer Mateis E. Aquir does his thing producing something more organic and selvatic while “Is it Balearic?” recording commanders Coyote put the album in a Leftfield-Dub-Rastafari mood. Tribal italian maestro Josè Manuel does what he knows best and signs a very personal, ethnic and dreamlike work.
On the other hand, Portuguese producer Jepe imprints a magical and dreamy touch in the compilation followed by the laid back style from greek balearica devotes Bonnie & Klein that will bring us straight to the Cayman Islands, and last but not least, this amazing Neo-Funky styled cut from Russian’s hero Volta Cab.

With an abundance of amazing tunes and music coming out of these restricted times, it’s made for a bumper crop of wonky chuggers, acid heaters and sun kissed Balearic bangers for our annual ‘A Summer Riot’ EP.  So much so, that’s this year’s IX instalment has bolstered considerably, now spreading over two editions, and with 6 tracks apiece from some of our favourite producers.

Seasoned Futureboogie pros, Christophe and PBR Streetgang, head up the selection on Part Two, with Christophe delivering a meaty, reverb soaked, acid brain bender on ‘Critters 2 (The Revenge)’, whilst the PBR boys offer up a sleez and seductive Moroder inspired romp.

Glasgow’s Manakinz make a second appearance across the two ‘A Summer Riot IX’ releases, with the hypnotising ‘Mystic Throbber’, whilst Roe Deers come good with the quirky and funky sounds of ‘Monkey Dance’.

‘Fire In Zero Gravity’ by duo Acolyte, touches on Detroit techno soul and inspirative piano work for their entry, and Jakobin seals off the EP with the ghostly ambience and shuffling beats of ‘Mighty Mt’.

James Bright has grown into an accomplished merchant of sun-streaked rhythms and uncannily spacious electronics from his beginnings. By the turn of the millennium Bright had laid the foundation to a sundazed body of work spanning from Balearic house to kosmische-indebted synth wave, whether solo or through his collaborative efforts. His latest offering ‘The Zooniverse EP’, reignites this flame with five cuts oozing true polyphonic vibrancy and widescreen open-endedness.

The trip starts with the title track ’The Zooniverse’, sending us into orbit for a lesson in intergalactic boogie. All synths blazing, the tune moves slow at first but that laid-back opening is soon superseded by revving keyboard chords and muscular bass swing that has first-grade Neptunian groover written all over it. The overly sexy, sturdy bass show-off continues with the aptly named ‘Cosmos’. Routing us towards cross-dimensional elation, this track is a finely arranged piece of otherworldly funk hedonism, rife with woozy slap bass moves, mischievous drums and hazy, verbed-out riffs - all set to propel the dancers to a higher sphere of consciousness.

A playful breaksy cut laced with an ambient-ish sound design, ’Time Lapse’ conjures up images of greater quiet and mind-expanding beauty. Submerging the listener in broad shrouds of Sino-flavoured zen, ‘90s-laced nu-age'isms and lavish Ibizan tropes, Bright’s got you covered for extended meditation sessions. Veering off onto more explicitly lysergic grounds, ‘Freq Out’ delves further into new beat dynamics to build a moment of retro raving grace that you can’t help but visualise it being played loud at a jam-packed Boccaccio on a busy Saturday night. Capping it on a fragrantly opiated note, ‘Patchouli’ overwhelms you in slow moving synthy quicksand, head wrapped in heady vapours, soft-touch acid squelch and mesmeric melodic layers, all duly woven to have you zoning out in a jiffy.

“Once upon a time, long ago, there lived at Treva, a wonderful old lady deeply skilled in necromancy. Her charms, spells, and dark incantations made her the terror of the neighbourhood.
Arriving at the church stile, they used to rest the corpse, and there stood the hare, which, as soon as the clergyman began, "I am the resurrection and the life," uttered a diabolical howl then the corpse would change into a black, unshaped creature, and disappeared.”

Starting off the EP is RFX, with a groovy mystical disco pearl of the faraway desert.
Second, we have a rework from Native Red of the infamous track that you know to sing but probably don’t remember where you heard it.
For the second edit from Native Red, we have a dark cinematic banger for some spooky vibe.
And last but not least, a very rare psychedelic gem RFX has dug up which closes the EP in with a rite of passage.

PREMIERE - ¡La Ruta! (Sean Johnston & Martyn Walsh) - Those who know, know (Days of Being Wild)

There is definitely something "afro" inspired about this latest EP from Puma & The Dolphin, certainly in comparison to pretty much everything else I've ever heard from him, which includes a great EP on Canadian imprint Chambre Noir and some stellar inclusions on every one of Dj soFa's highly respected "Elsewhere" compilations.

I'm told that while immersed in domestic life during lockdown in Sofia, Bulgaria, the music evolved to take in what was happening at home and saw the inclusion of toy instruments, his own drum playing, the voices of his children playing and even the family parrots whistling and squawking in the background. These random ambient insertions when seen in the context of the hypnotic and percussive rhythms and timbres throughout are oddly reminiscent of the late, great Francis Bebey who, although culturally and physically a million miles removed, was also known for recording much of his work at home and who also featured the voices of his children playing.

In fact, it is as much the music's playfulness and simplicity that give the pieces their distinctive character, at times echoing the repetition and mesmerism of Raymond Scott's "Soothing Sounds For Baby" series. Yet, childrens' music this is not. There is a mysticism and depth on one hand and a willingness to experiment on the other that reminds me of pioneering experimentalist K. Leimer's early Eno-inspired tape outings as well (see "Supermarket" for example).

I asked Puma & The Dolphin's Nikko Names if he could share the story behind how these six tracks came together. He had this to say:

"This collection of pieces were created during a monotone period of my life which I have overlaid with colour: a time in which I surrender to the beauty of home life - watching my kids play, feeding the birds - entwining these sounds of my surroundings amongst the rhythmic layers of these pieces. Playing the drums to remind us of the next circle dance for four. There is something mystic to travel only in your head; a shamanic trip inside the body with no concepts and answers."

PREMIERE : Puma & The Dolphin - Am Am Am

His home and studio - an exquisite apartment set upon three floors, located in the city's first and oldest quarter - became a trove of all of his sculpted creations. The rooms, fitted with large opaque windows that stretched out across tall, off-white walls, were filled with over 200 sculptures of varying sizes, some made of chalk and some generated from now unfortunately oxygenated bronze. The statues, in pure neo-Renaissance style, depicted an array of classical figures enacting diverse hedonistic activities. Some were drinking, some dancing and others were coily sharing a delicate romantic moment, all coming together in a great, immobile gathering.

Playground Records celebrates its 30th release with label co-founder Martin Noise's newest output. The four-track EP, titled DUI, features two original productions and two remixes by Bufi and Middle Sky Boom. Today we share the latter's remix of 'Pis Turístic', an organic, quasi-ritualistic track that features entrancing percussion and a mesmerising bassline that is perfectly accompanied by fluttering synths.
