"We made the mix in a manner of a chess game, taking turns in appending tracks to it, sending to each other the new versions which end with our new "moves". An interesting game, as neither of us knows in advance what the other would throw into the mix. Every time, receiving the updated version of the mix, one has to "deal" with what arrives and find the way to continue. Melbourne duo @HTRK (Nigel Yang & Jonnine Standish) have a well-storied history reaching back nearly two decades. From a back-catalogue comprising of significant releases on imprints like @Ghostly International, Mistletone and Boomkat Editions, collaborations with luminaries such as Mika Vainio, Rowland S. Howard & @benfrost, and appearances at numerous key events around the globe (including the legendary @berlinatonal festival, Krakow's @unsound and Vivid at the Sydney Opera House), their impact on a vast array of listeners and scenes is indelible and difficult to overstate.

As a two-piece band, their melancholic, sensual music lies roughly at the intersection of post-punk, no-wave, shoegaze and art-rock, with influences from IDM, industrial, noise, dub-techno, pop and beyond. Indeed, it is this eclectic palette, combined with deep knowledge and curiosity that has recently seen them contribute a captivating ambient score for Jeffrey Peixoto's documentary "Over the Rainbow" and regularly deliver genre-defying mixes on platforms like @secretthirteen and NTS.

A starting theme and departure point for HTRK's Patterns of Perception 74 is the ocean. This intricately assembled collection of music finds a natural ebb and flow amongst rich, organic synths and delicate abstract melodies. Building from a slow and introspective beginning, the duo intuitively and carefully guide the narrative to also incorporate gentle energy and a sense of strangeness. 
Viewed holistically, this mix is invigorating and luxuriously diverse, with a true chameleonic quality that allows the listener to take something different from every listen.

The next instalment in the Theory Therapy series comes from a particularly special selector, Russia's Sophia Zhuravkova.

Sophia adores nature and it clearly shines through in all of her work. In what seems like a very short space of time, the composer has established herself as one of the most impressive young ambient artists to emerge from Russia in recent years. In 2020, she captivated us with an appearance on Stay in Bed Vol.2 — released on DJ Earl Grey's Best Effort Records — put out her debut LP Unseen on Prins Emmanuel's excellent Ny Agenda imprint and then gifted us with the expansive Obstacles in October. Like the best ambient producers, her music expertly balances background and foreground. Field recordings — from spoken word and white noise to the soft lapping of waves — intersect with more melodic passages: reverberant drones, diffuse pads and the occasional acoustic instrument. 

The same can be said of her Theory Therapy mix. It replicates the experience of being somewhere special — like the stillness of an empty park or a rainy city sunrise after a night out. Sonically, it is both intimate and immersive; synths, dronescapes and haunting vocals pull you into where it was recorded: in the warm confines of her home during a wintry day in Kiev. So put the kettle on and get comfortable; this is music made to be listened to closely.
