Gallery Six - Ambient Mix Series vol.1

Velvet Rope Crowd Control is a collaboration project between Bryan Hilyard and Andrew J Klimek.

For years we had discussed post-rock and neo-classical collaborations, but this guitar-loop experiment fell into our laps first. Andrew (finally) bought some guitar pedals during lockdown in spring 2020 and recorded a few test riffs. Some time later, Bryan picked through a folder of these and started sampling & morphing them into drones. We both really dug the result and listened to them off and on for the next year. Finally in late 2021, Andrew added new layers and additional processing.
New Years Eve, we each made a beat-driven remix, hoping to release the album at the stroke of mid-night. We couldn't quite pull if off, so the project sat a little longer. In the mean time we were lucky enough to get 2 reworks by Agus aka Warmth.

Sometime in 2016, I came upon the California-based electronic musician, releasing his organic, evolving and highly textural synthesized compositions as r beny. I followed and watched many of his YouTube videos, where he showcased his modular skiff and various digital synthesizers (I particularly enjoyed watching the Novation Peak ambient showcase, which inspired me to purchase that synth). Throughout the years, I've been enchanted (as I'm sure some of you also have) with his particular aesthetic in creating warm, lush, and melancholic pads that stretch out their fingers and brush the worry away. When, in 2018, he got noticed by Dauw imprint, I reached out to premiere a track from his Saudade album. Since then, Austin Cairns' creations have continued to sell out - you can still buy digital copies of eistla (2018), echo's verse (2019), and natural fiction (2020) via his Bandcamp. By now, he has established a solid following, so it isn't easy to be useful with my words on HC. I can also say the same about the UK-based quiet details imprint, which has amassed a gathering of my all-time favourite ambient artists and relentlessly releases an amazing album every single month. This is almost a community now of all like-minded musicians sharing the label's aesthetic in creating pieces as an interpretation of the platform's name. I cannot keep up and cover every single album on there, so you might as well follow along on your own, and I promise that you won't be disappointed [for example, I failed to give my buddy James Murray proper coverage of his latest album, Weeds, thinking that, yeah, okay, you must already know that it's amazing]. Today, I'm dipping my toe back into the myriad of sonic seas and atmospheres with a track premiere from Cairns' upcoming album, discerned in the fugue of streams, because I think that it is very special.

Jason van Wyk is a Cape Town (South Africa) based electronic music producer whose music I often wish could have been my own. From cinematic soundscapes to soft piano keys and mesmerising passages, the elements of his pieces are all the necessary ingredients that I often try to combine in my music. And that is basically the highest sort of praise that I could give. There are many incredible ambient musicians who truly inspire me with their ability to create and transport me to their fantastic sonic worlds. And plenty have contributed to my growth as a musician - I am permanently indebted to many of them, whom I am honoured to call friends. But in my soul, I am a pianist, and the instrument [or its echoes] inevitably make it into my tracks. And this is what I love about Jason's music. His most recent release on the beloved n5MD, Inherent, is a more upbeat, forward-driven progression, combining his skills of crafting dance-oriented grooves with atmospheric soundtracks. For his upcoming EP, Jason reworked three tracks into pure ambient pieces. To truly appreciate the transformation, start by hearing the original track, followed by this alternative version. Mount Shrine (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) serves us a warm and inviting ambient album. 

Rain pounds the temple as you look out across snowy mountains from a lotus position. A wet furred hare seeks refuge beside you, curious about the kettle of hot tea that rests at your side. 

A distress call led you here, transmitted to a frequency on your Ham radio. The journey here was long and filled with majestic sights. Isolated villages, melting snow in forgotten valleys, the robed order of the silent all calmed your mind. The rolling fog followed you every step of the way to enlightenment. 

Recommended for lovers of subtle field recordings and sleep ambient. Warm, inviting and atmospheric. Best enjoyed with a cup of hot beverage on a rainy day.
