In the late 19th century, newspapers across the American Midwest began reporting sightings of mysterious airships hovering silently in the night sky. The sightings were consistent, low humming, metallic craft, strange lights and they predated modern aviation.
In April 1897, one such craft was said to have crashed near Aurora, Texas. Townsfolk buried the remains of a “small humanoid pilot” in the local cemetery. The grave existed until it was vandalized decades later, leaving only rumors and fragments of old reports.
But what people don’t talk about is the aftermath, farmers reported their livestock mutilated, windows rattled at night, and a figure seen walking the roads in long black clothing, face obscured by what looked like a flight mask. They called it the Phantom of the Airship, an omen that appeared whenever something unnatural was about to happen.
