Dj Ripper found the love for underground dance music in the very late 80's early 90's listening to
rave tape cassettes that were circulating at school; the likes of Micky Finn, LTJ Bukem, Carl Cox, Randall, Kenny Ken, Grooverider, Jack Frost, Bryan G, Ray Keith, GE Real & Ratty.
After meeting lots of like-minded people/ravers I was introduced to Dj Garry K and we soon became really good friends. He was the first Dj I saw mixing two vinyl’s together, and I fell in love instantly, jungle music had just blown up and I was hooked.
I then started going out to jungle raves all around the midlands and then all over the country going to big events like:
Pure-X, Equinox at Milwaukee’s, Helter Skelter, Dreamscape, United Dance, One Nation, Jungle Fever, just to name a few.
After spending a couple of years going to events with Garry K and watching him mix Jungle, I decided to have a go myself. I brought my own Decks and started buying my own tunes and created my own style.
I couldn’t think of a DJ name; Garry K came up with the name because of the way I mixed and dark selection I chose….. so, in 1997 DJ Ripper was born.
I started playing out at small local events in and around Northampton and the Midlands. I was fortunate to play at Legendary Venues such as:
The Edge club in Coventry, The Sanctuary & Rollers in Milton Keynes, NEC, Code/Air in Birmingham, The Ministry of Sound in London, O2 Academy & Lakota in Bristol, Koolaclub in Newquay just to Name a few, all of which were amazing.
Years of rolling with Garry K helped me a lot in the Drum & Bass scene. Garry inspired me massively and helped in the early days with bookings, mixing skills, promo hunting etc..
I have been very lucky to play in other country’s too such as Germany, Spain and Holland.
In 1999 I started working for Sidewinder and Helter Skelter. They both joined forces in 2001 to create Accelerated Culture putting on regular events at the Sanctuary in Milton Keynes and Code/Air club in Birmingham which was Godskitchen's own Club
Godskitchen then started doing their own festival Global Gathering. We ran the drum & bass tent which was the highlight of the year from 2001 to 2005.
After a 5-year partnership sidewinder & Helter Skelter parted company and sidewinder created a new drum n bass brand called Random Concept. I started working for Random Concept full time getting to DJ across the country and in Europe.
We took Random Concept on tour, hitting all the major towns and cities from London to Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Cambridge, Sheffield, Manchester, Newquay, Torquay, Leeds plus many more. These times were unforgettable, and you can imagine the stories I have to tell
The Random Concept crew also started up another brand called Subrockerz where i worked doing everything from promotion, putting on events, flyering, boarding, postering, working on the door, setting up, decor and of course Djing.
In 2011 the RC crew moved offices to a legendary club in Northampton called The Roadmender.
The Roadmender was also home to one of the biggest student nights in the UK called Propaganda. Propaganda is nationwide and I was fortunate to be asked to be the resident DJ each Friday night I got to dj all kinds of other music such as Acid House, Techno, Dubstep, Deep House and Neuro Funky Commercial Drum & bass. This was a great insight and opened my mind to other genres in underground music.
I have also played on lots of Radio shows from pirate stations in Birmingham & London to local FM shows and Internet shows such as Kool FM, Silk FM, BPM in Birmingham, Kindfunkyradio.com, Globaldnb.com, Ruthlesssoundz, Cre8dnb.com and Auzcast.com.
My style of Drum & Bass hasn't really changed much over the years. I love playing dark and hard to rolling liquid and soulful. My style takes you on a journey Rolling Beats, big Amen break tunes and
deep Sub bass Steppers.
In my DJ career so far, I have been lucky enough to play at:
Ram Records, Random Concept, Subrockerz, Godskitchens Global Gathering, Summer Gathering Festival, Sanctuary Festival, Accelerated Culture, One Nation, Slammin vinyl, Propaganda, Innovation, Breakin Science, Hardcore Till I Die, Raverbaby, Lizard Party, Shockerbeatz, Bassnova & Dance Conspiracy just to name a few with hopefully many more to come.
We are not here for a long time, we are here for a good time!!
