Ivan Smagghe is one of a kind. Through his three-decades-long quality control, memorable sets, creative vents, and collaborations like Smagghe & Cross, Black Strobe, and It's A Fine Line, the Frenchman has won respect among fellow DJ giants. A worldwide fan base came as no surprise. Layer 284 is a testimonial of that, and it makes you admire the patient build-up in this hour of timeless dance.

HEY! Did we just hit 300 LAYERS? Seems so. Like on their self-released EP, Each Other managed to cram tons of delicate celestial sounds into their LAYER. 

Justin Strauss is one of the most influential and enduring figures on the New York club scene. He’s consist-ently reinvented himself, moving from his ‘70s power-pop band Milk ‘N’ Cookies through an array of NYC’s most iconic clubs: the Mudd Club, Limelight and Area. By the late ‘80s and early ‘90s he emerged as in-demand remixer, able to reinvent tracks from big hitters as varied as Depeche Mode, 808 State and Duran Duran. That reputation only grew over the years and as a new wave of disco-tinged artists called on his tal-ents, including Hot Chip, Blood Orange and LCD Soundsystem.

Born in Paris, Max Pask also developed his reputation on the NYC scene since his move there in 2000. Re-mixing the likes of Soulwax, The Rapture and WhoMadeWho, Pask has held residencies at a multitude of venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn over the years. Along with long time friend and partner James Friedman, he also co-manages Throne of Blood Records, on which he has released under different monikers (Populette / Maxime & Remain). The two are currently residents at Brooklyn Hi Fi Club Public Records. In recent years, Max has been heard remixing Hardway Bros, Roe Deers, Mugwump and Timothy Clerkin.

A music journalist since 1994 and DJ since ’97, Marc began playing records at the legendary Nitsa Club (Barcelona) in 1999, becoming a mainstay resident since then.

After more than two decades playing extra long sets and state of the art warm-ups for the biggest names in the game he eventually decided not to fit into any particular style and embraced a chameleonic way of DJing which enables him to swing comfortably between genres, ultimately being able to play almost any kind of music or venue without compromising the quality of his sets —a rare ability nowadays.

While being “simply” a resident DJ might seem not that cool today, this is how Marc learned to make smooth transitions between very different acts and able to maintain the energy of the dance floor while keeping the ego in check and focusing in the crowd. Marc believes that adapting to the environment while also taking the crowd by surprise is one of his biggest assets.

After many years focused solely on DJing and refining his technique and style to the highest standards, Marc stepped forward into production, becoming involved with John Talabot’s label Hivern Discs, where he releases his own productions. In addition, he’s been busy producing a wide array of remixes (The xx, Colder, Save! and many more) and with C.P.I., his project with Hugo Capablanca where he’s been able to explore in a more experimental direction fusing leftfield, trance, electro or new beat.

With his name finally getting the recognition it deserves outside his native Spain, Marc plays at some of the world’s top clubs, including Panorama Bar, Lux, Robert Johnson, Trouw, and Space Ibiza, to name just a few.

LAYER number three-o-five displays MArc's interest in the atmospheric side of clubbing, drifting from ambient via submissive melodies for the meek, all the way to harsher dom club sounds.

Bristol-based DJ and producer Jamie Paton has been at it for almost 15 years. Starting out as one half of Cage & Aviary - a duo alongside pal George Hoyle who charted releases for DFA, Internasjonal and Dissident - Jamie went on to carve out his own path; one lined with heady, tripped out sounds to move the mind and the body.

Since going solo his music has does the rounds on some of our favourite labels, we're talking Höga Nord, Emotional Especial and the dearly departed Bahnsteig 23.

There's plenty more in the works too. In between his other job as a graphic designer, Jamie's been in the studio cooking up more potent electronics, some of which will soon see the light of day on ESP Institute and Multi Culti, along with another fresh project in collaboration with R$N extended family member, Chez De Milo.

Ahead of all that good stuff in the pipeline, we asked Jamie to supply a mix for us, a task he graciously accepted. Across two hours he takes us down a wormhole of hypnotic electronics, leftfield synth excursions and trippy rhythms. Let yourself get lost....

Jamie Paton: The 'Ransom Note' Mix

Mehmet Aslan has always been a dab hand and blending the old with the new. A childhood spent soaking up Turkish sounds (thanks to his parents) first ignited his love for music, and by his teenage years he'd become obsessed with collecting records, digging deep into the infinite realms of house and techno.

But when he began producing, he found a way of merging these two formative styles. Many of you will remember his early outings for labels like Hamam House and Huntley + Palmers which saw him either editing old Turkish records into club ready rhythms or injecting his own productions with influences from his roots.

These qualities have continued too permeate his releases since. As well as music for his own co-run Fleeting Wax label, he's shared EPs for Planisphere, Dischi Autunno and Huntley + Palmers' Highlife offshoot which showcase his deep and psychedelic approach to making electronic music.

Though it's a decade since his first release came out, it wasn't until recently that he shared his first ever album. Sun Is Parallel is a rich and diverse body of work that, unsurprisingly, takes in many different influences and journeys across different tempos. As always, there's a hypnotic quality that brings everything together but across its 11-track duration you'll hear mid-tempo acid jams sitting next to folkloric electronica and cinematic soundscapes unfurling into hazy grooves. 

Following the release, we asked him to put a mix together for us. Over an hour it coasts from off-kilter funk and synth-pop through to oddball rhythms, best enjoyed - as Mehmet suggests - whilst running through a Mexican canyon with the cartel hot on your tail...
