SBat began the night right, slowly sinking us in deep with choice choice atmospherics and hypnotizing beats. The party that followed was one to remember and we're delighted to present our listeners with a glimpse of that night.

SBat - Subterra - Live at Upsidedown 17.06.23

This set was recorded live on the night opening from 11pm - 1am for Subterra, something I hope will become a regular thing in Osaka (and hopefully Tokyo). It was a truly amazing night to be a part of and something I spent a lot of time thinking about and getting records together that I hoped I could piece together on the night to suck people in and set the scene for DJ Morita, Lene Andreasen and yu1 (who all played amazingly). The mix is of course a bit rough around the edges, a couple of times I zigged when I planned to zag but hopefully that adds to the charm and the journey as a whole is one you'll enjoy. I know I certainly enjoyed being there and listening back to it brings back memories of what was an incredible night that I won't soon forget.

I went back through the mix trying to piece together the tracklist so hopefully others can go forth and find more stuff by all of the amazing artists on there. I think I got them all but apologies if I missed/messed up!

2nd Hour: Sbat

Recorded in my Tokyo apartment on a couple of 1200s, a lone XDJ and my cherished FF4000 mixer, the mix was slowly put together over the course of a couple of months as I went through almost all of my collection trying to find the right records (old and new). I've always been a big fan of DJs that can keep chugging from one 100bpm obscure number to the next, all the while making all everything sound like it belongs together (e.g. Andrew Weatherall in full backroom swing) and I really wanted to try and create my own version of that where you're taken through different styles, almost without realising (I hope), but whilst keeping the focus on a late night/early morning stomp in the backroom of some weird Tokyo after hours club you probably should have left ages ago...but you didn't...and you still have a few more hours in you.

Electric Lounge 28/1/24

Muzan Editions is honored to welcome SBat once more to our growing collection of mixes and sets by friends near and far. For this installment, we present SBat's ambient set at the wonderful Liminal Dreams party in Tokyo (2023.12.10). SBat conjures up a shimmering dreamscape of sounds that warps seamlessly between genre and mood, guiding the listener through nostalgic rememberances, glistening electronic futures, and hazy mirages that elude categorization. We recommend getting very comfortable and organizing some proper listening conditions before drifting off (and drifting deep) into this one.

We'd like to thank the Liminal Dreams crew for signing off on our use of Sbat's set. LD has a special place in the hearts of us here at Muzan. Not only are they an integral part of the flourishing ambient scene in Tokyo, but were kind enough to invite Endurance to their very first event - and Dérive to their latest party last month! It only made sense to ask her to create a mix that represents her feelings of Far Blue, as she has been part of the process for a long time now. Welcome back to the Gated podcast just in time for Autumn. 
This time we have a real treat for you with our guest Mark Shephard.
Mark honed his DJ skills in the clubs and basements of Brooklyn before relocating to Tokyo in 2022. Currently he was an organizer of the Acid Gakkou party in Shibuya, frequent guest DJ at Circus Tokyo for the Ensite series of parties, and performed live regularly in Tokyo with hardware drum machines and synthesizers. He’s now established himself in a move to Berlin alongside partner and previous esteemed guest on the Gated Pod, MuHe.
We grabbed Mark for a little bit of a catchup and thoughts behind the mix.

“I’ve been getting settled in Berlin these past months, really enjoying running in the abundant parks and getting some crash German education. Music wise, I’m very into electro and acid house recently, particularly the new releases from Tom Carruthers and Legowelt on L.I.E.S. and from Ninechecker on brokntoys. My idea for this podcast was to play with different broken rhythms at a wide spread of tempos, with some recurring IDM melancholy in the chords and melodies. Cheers!”

Welcome to the end of year round up from Node!

Very kindly recorded live on the night by @mucaromusic and given some mastering love by @alignrepeat, this is my opening set from the 2nd room at Vent for Mind Off. I really wanted to dig out lots of old deep and warm sounding records for this set and slowly build as people ventured into the room, so I spent a lot of time trying to pack my record bag with old favourites and others I've hardly played since getting them 10+ years ago! Those that have seen me play a lot in Manchester will likely recognise the odd 'Slagbat classic' in there so hopefully that'll bring back some good/questionable memories too.
