BEST OF MAY 2017

It's an indie pop/rock start to this week's list with the jangly guitar pop of Beach Fossils quickly followed by Sea Girls, B Boys and Roya before Ghostpoet's excellent "Immigrant Boogie" (sounding very Mark Lanegan) marks the transition point. Roll the Dice (quite noirish) gives way to the techno sounds of Steve Summers & Bookworms, before heading off to close the list with some World sounds in the shape of Nickodemus (try and clap the rhythm to that one!), the sparse drums and sax grooves of Binker & Moses, and finally closing out with the joyous Balkansambel and "Vrtiglavica" which means dizziness. Pick of the week is Ghostpoet, which just keeps better and better, although I do have a soft spot for Beach Fossils and the mesmerising sounds of Binker & Moses.

Binker and Moses leave the now behind and Journey to the Mountain of Forever.

Binker Golding and Moses Boyd will release Journey to the Mountain of Forever -  their second album for London record company Gearbox Records - on 2nd June 2017 in double vinyl LP and double CD formats.

When Binker and Moses’ debut album Dem Ones was released in the Summer of 2015 it kickstarted a remarkable year for the young saxophone and drums duo, who won a string of awards including the 2015 MOBO Awards: Best Jazz Act, Jazz FM Awards 2016: UK Jazz Act of the Year and Breakthrough Act of the Year and the 2016 Parliamentary Jazz Awards: Jazz Newcomer of the Year. Like the album itself, their festival and club performances received rave reviews and ever-growing audiences, culminating in a November 2016 UK tour with The Bad Plus. 

Journey to the Mountain of Forever is a story album about travelling from the known to the unknown. You can expect to meet with Shamans and Ultra Blacks and immerse yourself in strange rituals and echoes from the infinite.

Sessions for the new album took place on July 21st and 22nd 2016, resulting in 10 reels of tape filled with over five hours of music. Like it’s predecessor Dem Ones, the new album was recorded completely live from Mark Ronson’s Zelig studio by Grammy award winning engineer Ricky Damian. direct to a 1960’s Studer C37 1/4” tape machine at Gearbox’s studio next door with no edits or mixing. The vinyl lacquers were cut directly from this original stereo master on Gearbox’s 1967 Haeco Scully lathe with Westrex RA1700 series amps, using a Westrex 3DIIA cutting head and Telefunken U73B tube limiter, Maselec master control and equalisation and Audio Note monitoring equipment.

HEY COLOSSUS - THE GUILLOTINE

Hey Colossus have undergone a spectacular metamorphosis in the last three years - the 2015 Rocket Recordings double-drop of ‘In Black And Gold’ and ‘Radio Static High’ displayed not only a band with a work rate to put most all their contemporaries to shame, but one arriving at an atmospheric and rewarding sound with as much flair for the beguiling as the barbaric. 

Changes may have been afoot in the Hey Colossus camp, yet their latest transmission ‘The Guillotine’ marks another peak for an innovative force in the realm of heavy amplification. Darker and more brooding than their recent work, it’s also perhaps their most richly melodic to date -  the interplay of their three guitar lineup has never sounded more fluent than on these eight songs, nor their songcraft more well-defined. 

This is a record whose alchemical charge arrives from a reinvention of loud rock shapes into forms both feral and fresh - whilst Hey Colossus can still bludgeon with overamped vigour, as on the hypnotic and devastating krautrock-Jesus-Lizard hybrid of ‘Back In The Room’ they can also deliver the dusky and haunting waltz-time serenade of ‘Calenture Boy’ with uncompromising fortitude, with the new-found confidence and allure of Paul Sykes’ vocals at the forefront. 

These menacing and immersive songs chronicle a band exploring a unique sound and invigorating approach in a decade in which cliches and genre pieces in the realm of the psychedelic have frequently surrounded - here the six-piece find themselves transcending the limitations of the underground scene from whence they came, whilst exposing the paucity of inspiration in much of the guitar-rock mainstream. Hey Colossus are at their sharpest, and none will survive ‘The Guillotine’.
