I hope to someday finish animation I started years ago of flamingos in the rain dancing to this song.

Synth harp, guitars, clarinet, cellos, and bass set to hit hop, conga, and bongo beats at a tango’s pace of 70 bpm. Rain audio recorded live in December 2023.

I wrote an extended version of this track more than a decade ago during a time I was experiencing intense physical pain. As I fled inwardly into creativity to escape, this music narrated the discovery of a quiet harbor from pain.

Later I became amused watching a wildlife documentary of flamingos and their mating dance. As they marched together in step, abruptly turning their heads and beaks known as head flagging to an unknown beat accentuating their synchronized rhythm, I imagined flamingos dancing the tango. Initially I had ambitions to create an animated short with Tango In The Rain as the soundtrack. With time constraints, I leaned more toward the immediacy of digital music-making than animation and discovered pain relief in the process. And as a fan of old movies, this tune evolved into my fantasy score for a different Singin' in the Rain type of musical of animated dancing flamingos.

Despite it happening over a hundred years ago, the sinking of The Titanic is a subject which continues to fascinate.  Many may believe the ship’s misfortune in striking an iceberg was the simple reason for her demise but the true story is a catalogue of human error.  Investigation of the circumstances have unearthed a plethora of  mistakes that in their own way, all contributed to the disaster.  

In 1985, a secret mission to find the wrecks of two nuclear submarines unwittingly discovered that of The Titanic and since that time, ongoing scientific expeditions have discovered that the metal structure has created a species of bacteria that will eventually consume the entire ship, recycling the nutrients into the ocean ecosystem.  You can’t fight Mother Nature.  And you can’t fight those who'll always spot a way of making huge amounts of profit, no matter the grisly events from which they evolve. 

By 1998, tickets were put on sale at $32,500 each for tourists to view the remains and since then, fewer than 250 people have visited the site.  By 2021, OceanGate, who owned the Titan submarine, were offering tours to view said remains at a cost of up to $250,000 per person.  

Whilst understanding the continued scientific interest, I do find it macabre that the graves of those killed aboard Titanic, many from poor backgrounds, should become a tourist playground for the rich and privileged. That isn't to say I wasn’t glued to the news, hoping for a positive outcome in the rescue bid for those aboard the Titan sub.  It was deeply upsetting to discover that they had perished.  Some five years before the fatal implosion, specialists had warned OceanGate that the venture could very possibly end in such a disaster, yet I very much doubt the occupants, who had paid so much, were made aware of the fact.

I wanted to write a song that reflected how little we have learned in the century or so between Titanic and Titan.  It seems that, for rich and poor alike, the arrogance of greed will always be with us. (Terry Reeves)

(For those wondering what ‘CQD’ means, it was the first signal the wireless operator aboard Titanic used to call for assistance and means “All Stations.  Distress!” Later though, he did also transmit the more universally used code, ’SOS’).

I was a rather weird kid, listened to Spike Jones, Benny Goodman, fifties rock´n´ roll and my father´s jazz record collection (O.  Peterson, Bird, C. Brown, W. Montgomery etc.)
 Later I discovered Psychedelia, New wave/Punk, Japanese noise (especially C.C.C.C.), 60-70s rock classics, Debussy&Messiaen, Dub reggae, Prog (Gabriel era Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator....), vintage Beninese stuff (Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou, Gnonnas Pedro  and so on), UK Freakbeat, out-there Jazz, Bowie/Floyd bootlegs, J. Zorn, early 90s Indie, F. Zappa, antique French Pop (Dutronc, Laforet...), U. Srinivas plus labels like Delerium Records, Shimmy Disc, Japan Overseas (Osaka), RecRec music and God knows what.
Additionally, I should mention that my all time favorite Finnish album is Sperm "Shh! Heinäsirkat". Check it out!
Various literary and "cinematic" influences have molded my music.  The more predictable stuff like Surrealism, Dada, Situationism, Beats (mainly W. Burroughs) of course, but I have also been influenced by the old-school Finnish Radio Drama, Beninese "traditions", the ramblings/books by P .Levenda, Megalithic Structures&Art, the humor of H.S. Thompson, 70s-80s Eastern European Animation, Yakuza films and by the cult movies re-released by Blue Underground, Something Weird Videos, Mondo Macabro, Arrow Films and so forth. Pretty far-out stuff that could destroy your mind permanently?
 And nope, my photo is not from the 50s or from the 60´s (It was taken around 358 BC, hahaha).
