Looking Back

Written specifically for an ambisonic, surround-sound concert hosted by Tuesdays Post at Iklectik, London. An immersive piece about the engines of vocal sounds and the articulators. ..vowels and consonants... We can only mean something if the sounds uttered make patterns that we recognise as aural symbols for doing, naming, describing, categorising and connecting. ... all the sounds in this piece are vocal.. apart from one long sample of a bass monochord (a wooden board you lay down on.. and someone plays 40 or so strings attached underneath.. all of the same pitch).. It's about meaning... some words pop through the clouds of vocal sound, all these words belong to 8 taglines... most of the rhythms are derived from the rhythm of these sentences, normal everyday sentences that make you think of a product because of the sheer amount of repetition .. disrobing the sentence of it's original sentiment.

Undivided

Another musical daydream based on experiments with modular synthesis, starting with various arpeggiated chords from the E370 internal sequencer and explorations of the Xoac digital frequency shifter, useful for making dramatic bass sounds. The piece finishes quietly with a nighttime field recording of Echo Lake (Maine) set to musical accompaniment  - you can hear some loon calls if you listen carefully. 

Much has happened in the last few months: a move required the studio be put in storage for months, then when it was fully restored in our new home, the music computer died. Now that the new music work station is installed and ready for action, I'm finally back in business again. Some of the clips used here were developed in the computer's absence, hence an experiment in DAW-less sound design, which I must admit, isn't my favorite way to work.

I could not see the ciccada. I could not see the bell nor the semantron. I could not see the monastery of Sankt Ana, only a peak of a tower maybe, a steeple or lightening rod, up there, amid the trees, after the thick, gnarly bramby scrub going up the hill from our camp site. The sun ferocious and oozing plasma. Finding shade, we drank our water and read our books and plotted our course. The toaca in the monastery struck -- the percussion of hammers on a plank of wood, sometimes call the semantron -- I'd learned about this sound from maybe Kazantzakis, Sikelianos, Seferis--  one of those Greek poets anyway. A sound resonant of Mt. Athos. I've never seen the bells on Athos. Hearing the percussion, I rushed to the car to grab the recorder and catch the strange dry tabla amid the clicking insistence of the insects marking out their mating territorries. In the morning after breaking camp and breaking our fast, we drove up to the hill to visit the monastery. And the mystery of the semantron and the bells was repeated on a Sunday morning as well.
