Today marks the return of Bristolian producer Minotaur Shock as he releases his first album under the much-loved moniker since ‘Orchard’ in 2012. On ‘Orchard’ Edwards embraced the "folktronica" tag that had previously been a burden, but, nearly seven years on, he has renounced the acoustic guitars, drums and woodwind instruments to make ‘MINO’ - the sound of a man getting to grips with his machines without relinquishing his innate musicality and ear for joyous melodies. 

Although electronica was integral to the Minotaur Shock sound (he has also released purer excursions in the form as Principal Participant and Oligos), Edwards felt that he'd never got to grips with the basics of production. "I knew what effect certain knobs on a synth had, but had no idea why they did that or what was really going on." So he embarked on a prolonged period of experimentation, “basically dicking around in my studio, focusing on the process of creating tracks and sounds, rather than the end result, trying to grasp the fundamentals of synthesis to better understand how it worked. Occasionally I did press record or save, and these experiments formed the basis of ‘MINO’.” 

In celebration of the release we invited him to contribute to our beloved mix series, which he does with flair and imagination.

Minotaur Shock: The Ransom Note Mix

Sydney-based DJ and radio host Andy Garvey is a real go-getter. Having been a regular fixture on the Australian airwaves for many years now, hosting shows Spin The Bottle and Future Classics on FBi Radio and Triple J's Mix Up and Friday Mix, her radio skills have also given her a home on Amsterdam's Red Light Radio with her Pure Space show.

She's given her new label the same name, which launched at the beginning of this month with a four track V/A including contributions from E Davd, Reptant, Point Guard and Daze. Musically cruising through breakbeat, electro and techno, it's representative of Andy's tastes as a DJ and as a producer — her debut release Eternal Recurrence has just come out on Lobster Theremin. 

Fresh off the back of her first Boiler Room appearance at Pitch Music and Arts festival, we are hyped to have her at the controls for our Wednesday Alternative mix, a deep dive into her leftfield, experimental tastes... 

Keep your eye on Andy, she's definitely a name you'll be hearing more of in future.

Kasper Marott and Alfredo92 are two names to emerge with prominence from Denmark, the pair have collaborated on a sprawling array of projects and concepts in recent years. However, it is only recently that they have formally announced new music as a duo on their new label Axces to which they describe the imprint as follows...

"Greetings and welcome from Axces. We're a small local Copenhagen community of friends and curious souls. This is our very first record. Alfredo92 and Kasper Marrot run the label, and they've produced two tracks with help from our good friends Carl Emil and Lauge.

The record was created in 2017 at the professional facilities we've come to know as Nordvest Auto. On both tracks, you'll hear a lot of drums, some bass, effects, samples, vocals and sounds from beyond, we don't know how to describe. They've been tested on various sound systems during the past year, and we can ensure you that a flat EQ and max volume will suit the tracks almost anywhere. 

We really hope you enjoy our effort. If you should ever find yourself in Copenhagen Axces will provide counselling and guidance at own risk."

Respectively they are both killer disc jockeys and have received firm support from a number of names including the likes of Courtesy, Modeselektor and beyond.

At the Brooklyn Mirage season finale @andhim dug a groove so deep in the King’s Hall the people couldn’t stop dancing.
