David Mayer is a boundary-defying producer and DJ whose sonic palette has been shaped by an extraordinary multicultural upbringing spanning Germany, Spain, Norway, and ultimately Berlin, where he settled in 2004. This rich tapestry of cultural influences has cultivated his distinctive approach to music—one that refuses to be confined by genre conventions. No matter the genre, his passion for funked-up, pounding four-on-the-floor beats dominates his creative output. When spinning records and producing tracks, he presents his interpretation of catchiness, blending techno and house, and adds a touch of depth, but always keeps an eye on making his audience move and groove.

David’s music has traveled the world, releasing on world-renowned labels such as Connected Frontline, Ouïe, Objektivity, Gruuv, Audiomatique, and Keinemusik.

With releases on Belgian label Depth and another EP on Jeudi the Dutch producer has managed to build up a reputation for himself over the past months with more music to come in the future as a remix for Offering Recordings is already in the making. Berlin Club Culture is facing the biggest challenge in its history. On Friday, the 13th of March, all of Berlin´s nightlife was officially shut down to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Since then, about 9000 employees, as well as tens of thousands of artists have been without work and wages, and the existence of many of the places that give Berlin its identity is threatened.
As a reaction to the closing of all Berlin clubs and to the rest of the world being in quarantine, Berlin is showing its support and solidarity by bringing the biggest possible digital club to your home.

1. Where did you record the podcast? And how did you feel?
The last 9 weeks I have been staying at home, mainly inside, just like most people out there and like most people I personally know. Actually I did not even find missing going outside the biggest issue. I threw myself into making music right away after we came back on one of the last flights out of Istanbul, heading straight into lockdown. The first couple of weeks I so much appreciated the freedom to just make music nonstop with the fewest distractions as long as I can remember. In the beginning there was something energetic about the whole situation, some of you may know what I’m talking about. But  others experienced it differently and  I also suspected that it might not stay hyper forever, as the constant flow of changing news indicated that things could always get worse and that literally anything was possible.
I realise that living in Berlin and having a nice home with a sufficient studio setup is really lucky and a huge privilege, I’m very grateful for that. However, recently my thoughts started drifting towards more worrying aspects of the future more and more often. It takes more energy to stay positive all the time compared to in the beginning. It was like "wow, this is happening!". Right now it's like "Oh, this actually happened" and no one can tell wether we’ll get back together for dancing late 2020 or late 2021.
Actually this is the mix of feelings and thoughts I channeled into this particular recording. It’s compiled out of tracks I collected since the time when Corona hit town early March. Subsequently, this mix turned out very different to the last one I recorded for Anomaly a few weeks ago, when dancing in a packed club was still a clear memory.

2. Tell us a bit about how Covid-19 changed your artist life.
I was thinking a lot about wether the pressure to make the best out of the time in lockdown was a constructive kind of pressure and wether I should fully give into it or rather read more books and stuff like that instead. I decided on trying to channel that energy as well as I could for focusing on production. I really wanted to be able to look back at this time and say that at least I was productive. Recently I reflected and was almost surprised to find that I finished 5 remixes in this time and also two podcasts, including this one for UnitedWeDream. That’s a lot more stuff than what I would usually even attempt to accomplish in 9 weeks. The only thing I didn’t feel like doing yet was video streaming. But it looks like that might change soon, too.
Besides continuing to make as much music as I can, I’m also working on not losing faith and get prepared for the next steps towards a life after Corona lockdown as well as I can.

For my Burn Istanbul NYE stream I chose to throw on some brand new tunes, some tunes I loved from 2020 and some of my most heartfelt favorites of the last year or two, all representing some moments I wish we could have shared in direct social and pyhsical proximity.

Crossing borders is a familiar experience to David Mayer. Though being born in south Germany, he spent most of his youth living in Norway and (for a change) in Lanzarote, before Berlin happened to become his home in 2004. With key-releases on Connected, Ouïe, Objektivity, Mobilee and Keinemusik alongside remixes on Kompakt, Get Physical and Rise Music Berlin he has forged a reputation as a producer and touring DJ.

As he prefers thinking outside the box, Mayer has always been equally interested in listening to and experimenting with diverse forms of music, no matter what musical genre they derive from, although his passion for funked up and heavily pounding 4/4 beats clearly dominates his creative output. Early tracks like “Fortune”, “Word Is Bond”, “Celsius” and his several remixes are characterised by an intriguing knack for detail and precise sound design. Both when spinning records and producing tracks, he is presenting his own interpretation of catchiness, mixing up Techno and percussive House, adding a little deepness, but always keeping an eye on making his audience shake some...

A lot has happened in the last 20 years of dance music, but one constant has been Get Physical right at the sharp end of the scene. The label has become a globally recognised symbol of quality, renowned for its always varied and vital house output. Forming the backbone of the label's vast catalogue is the influential in-house DJ mix series, Body Language. It is a snapshot of exactly where the underground is at and has been assembled by tastemakers such as Azari & III, Catz ‘N Dogz, Dixon, DJ Hell, Francesco Tristano, Nôze and of course label-founders Booka Shade, DJ T., and M.A.N.D.Y..

Next to that there has been a constant stream of innovative, dance-floor ready singles, crossover club classics, seminal remixes and a number of standout artist albums. The label has always stayed true to its house roots, but with a rich array of influences taken from the worlds of disco, deep, tech and melodic house. Along the way, Get Physical´s core artists have been joined by red hot new talents including Alinka, Thandi Draai, PAUZA, Yulia Niko, Birds Of Mind, CIOZ and Monkey Safari. There have also been carefully considered forays into thriving house music scenes in Africa, Brazil, Cuba, Croatia and India: dedicated compilations and EPs have highlighted those region's most exciting new talents and given them a global platform. 

The name says it all: Get Physical tracks could hardly be more moving and corporeal. It was true in 2002, and it will be true in 2025 and beyond.
