Enduro Disco continues his mesmerising run of form on Exploited with another
spellbinding three-track release.
‘Julio’ is unmistakably his handiwork: a classy, spacious slice of modern, dubbed-out
disco. Warm, Balearic bass underpins a haze of chopped-up, resplendent disco
string samples and tripped-out, unintelligible vocals at the core of the track. Flurries
of saccharine, mellifluous synths soar and glide from various pockets of the track,
and deft conga rhythms fill in the gaps. More dramatic synth touches and triangle
16ths keep the track captivating to the very last moment.
‘One Jam’ is similarly dreamy, where plucked 8-bit-esque melody twinkles over
chugging bass and breathy male vocal harmonies. A triumphant feel envelops this
track, with shimmering disco hi-hats bringing the rhythm urgency and subtle strings
filtering away in the bedrock of the composition. Blissed-out, spine-tingling gear.
‘Standing Up’ completes this delightful 3-pack in wonderfully colourful fashion. The
bass is more funk-fuelled, blasts of sprightful trumpet jump out of the mix, and sweet
snatches of piano give passing glances through a filtered haze. Samples are twisted
into unrecognisable snatches of melody, and infectious percussive hits pepper the
groove msot pleasingly. Masterful.

'Martin Buttrich is famously as fluent behind a mixing console as in front of a virtual drum kit. That technical prowess, combined with a fascination for music of every shape, has resulted in outstanding releases on influential labels such as Planet E, Four: Twenty, Cocoon, Poker Flat, Nervous and Desolat. Having recently retired from DJing, Buttrich has devoted himself entirely to his own productions over the last few years.

“I discovered how much better I am as a producer. I'm so happy in the studio, and so productive. It feels good after 15 years on the road as a house and techno DJ to take a little breather and gain perspective,” says Buttrich. Relieved from heavy touring schedules and the pressure to make dance music, the veteran producer took a trip down memory lane for his latest album project, Light Vessel Automatic, which he releases under the new alias Stoned Autopilot.

With a career with roots in Berlin and Hannover clubs, through to his notorious collaboration with Timo Maas at Peppermint Jam distribution, to formative years in New York working alongside Loco Dice, Buttrich has throughout the decades collected a vast array of musical influences that have shaped his groove into one that is instantly recognizable for the discerning listener. Light Vessel Automatic is a collage that colourfully brings together these musical memories, with an especially jazzy and chillout sway - a style of music that has always been a passion of his, but that had somewhat been sidelined by his career entertaining dancefloors worldwide, “I’m definitely not letting go of dance music, but over the last few years it just didn’t feel right releasing big bangers out there,” says Buttrich.

It’s not just the catchiness of his compositions or the way he manipulates beats into unique tapestries that have earned Buttrich his stripes. His skills with a sonic scalpel, that esoteric ability to navigate the spectrum of audible (and inaudible) frequencies have given him cachet among even the most meticulous of sound engineers. For Light Vessel Automatic, Buttrich is unafraid of putting solemn piano melodies and cinematic strings side-by-side wacky synth dings, reggae bounces or retro-house beats.

“Nothing fits in one direction, it’s a bit chaotic, so I thought of having this stoned autopilot go through it all,” notes Buttrich. Even more impressively, he manages to give every sound on the album orchestral coordination and breathing space, stretching out tracks until they feel like whole universes with colours and textures. Within what is a highly personal journey, an exercise or recollection really, Buttrich also finds space to look forwards, inviting a younger generation of musicians to contribute on the album, as is the case with Greg Foat’s luxurious rework of Lovefields. “I’m a little older, and there’s a whole new generation of producers, a great new movement from people I wanted to support,” says Buttrich.

Attention to detail is a trademark of the producer, but so is his ability to never sound fastidious – above all, there’s an overarching playful and nonchalant attitude to Light Vessel Automatic. It’s an album for slow appreciation and careful consideration, much like pictures in a photo-album, every track on Light Vessel Automatic captures a memory of a moment in time of Buttrich’s rich musical life. In all its layers it expresses just how far Buttrich has come as one of Germany’s foremost producers.'

Get Physical Music kicks off a new relationship with Greta Levska by signing up her first collaborative track with Trutopia. 

Lithuanian-born, London-raised Ibiza resident Greta Levska has a richly multicultural background that feeds into the music she makes and plays. She is someone who quickly rose up through the ranks on the White Isle this summer with energetic sets that cross a wide house and tech spectrum. Inspired by the likes of DMX Krew, Bugz In The Attic and Peggy Gou, Greta will follow up this first outing on Get Physical with more new music in 2023. 

'Lights Off' was made with Trutopia, two brothers from Swansea Wales who have been making underground moves on labels like Strictly Rhythm since 2015. It's an intense house cut with future-retro synths lashing about the mix over punchy drums. An echoing vocal swirls around the mix to bring the soul and after the atmospheric breakdown acid flashes up the ante and takes things to the next level. 

This is a fine first outing from Greta Levska with many more to come.

Cuba, Get Physical! is a new various artists series curated by Cuban pair PAUZA. This EP features music from them, Okanan, Kike Wolf and Joan Coffigny.

The Get Physical label has spent much of it’s recent time partnering with local DJs and party crews around the world in a bid to build awareness around local scenes. Previous chapters have draw on the musical talents of Africa, India, Detroit & Croatia and now it is the turn of this most storied of musical islands to take it’s turn. Cuba, Get Physical!

The collection shines a light on the rich house sounds of the Caribbean country and kicks off with Havana's Pauza. Paula Fernandez and Zahira Seanchez's 'Caliente' is a sun-kissed, deeply musical house track with tender Spanish vocals from Cuban singer-songwriter Arema Arega. It is then Okana who offers 'Asere,' a stripped-back and shuffling house cut with a warm and oversized bassline. Gentle bell sounds and tinkling percussion detail the beats, as do rolling hand drums that instantly bring the Cuban vibes.

Kike Wolf is Enrique Maresma, a DJ and producer and one of the founders of the acid techno movement in Cuba. His 'Tropical Interference' is a lively cut run-through with fizzing synths, Afro drum patterns and jumbled percussion that brings irresistible Latin flair. Last of all is Havana's Joan Coffigny, an event organiser and key force in the scene with credits on labels like Confederation Records and Roland Ultra. He mixes up rich percussive patterns and scattered hits with Spanish vocal chants. The kinky house grooves are full of colour and emotion and bring a sunny feel to any set.

This is a fantastic taster of the rich array of underground sounds coming out of Cuba.

Boznich is not just another English import. Arriving in NZ 3 years ago, he has ingratiated himself in the Auckland and Raglan house and techno scenes thanks to his lively and kind nature, and passion for quality sound. It just so happens, he’s also a pretty good DJ as well. 

Discovering house and techno was a game changer for Boznich. A trip to California when he was young and the introduction to a set of CDJs and a mixer had him enthralled, but it was Tale of Us and Ben Klock a few weeks later in Bristol that nailed it home for him.

He’s since run nights and graced the decks at some of London’s biggest and most renowned venues, XOXO LDN and Ministry of Sound among them. He’s played at Amsterdam’s ADE and is now bringing his sound to events and festivals across NZ. And we are glad to have him.

This summer sees him playing stages at some of NZ’s biggest festivals alongside some our our most recognised names, he’ll even be playing some of his own tunes that he’s been in the studio honing.

Expect Boznich’s signature groove and melody in this almost 2 hour rolling mix, one he played off the cuff with inspiration from days and nights spent on LO-FI dance floors.

PREMIERE: Guevarism — Art Is Magick (Original Mix) [Erbium Records]

Narrative music invites the listener to envision a scene in their head, and up next on Roy Davis Jr.’s Undaground Therapy Muzik imprint is an EP that does just that. The German duo Turquoise Colored French Tourists are releasing their debut EP on the label this spring with their dance floor ready five tracker Monaco EP.

The Monaco EP is funky house at its best, offering five tracks of unadulterated groove with the duo’s signature synth flair flowing throughout. The title track sets the precedent as here you are invited to join the duo as they cruise the streets on a balmy, summer’s evening. Cheap House continues to loosen things up with its straight up funky bassline. So In Love layers a soulful vocal over cheeky guitar licks and cosmic squiggles, the night is well and truly underway. Named accordingly, Late Night is up next and takes the listener into the sleazier depths of the night, with its disco tinged groove. As the night draws to a close, gleaming synths are layered over a rolling, verging on hypnotic rhythm as Last Call brings the musically rich EP to a finish.

A lot has happened in the last 20 years of dance music, but one constant has been Get Physical right at the sharp end of the scene. The label has become a globally recognised symbol of quality, renowned for its always varied and vital house output. Forming the backbone of the label's vast catalogue is the influential in-house DJ mix series, Body Language. It is a snapshot of exactly where the underground is at and has been assembled by tastemakers such as Azari & III, Catz ‘N Dogz, Dixon, DJ Hell, Francesco Tristano, Nôze and of course label-founders Booka Shade, DJ T., and M.A.N.D.Y..
