Following dancefloor-troubling releases by the ever-rising Disclosure, Vampire Weekend’s Baio and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard featuring Boris Dlugosch, London via Berlin collective Greco-Roman present the ‘I’m Not Dancing’ EP by Tirzah.

 Due out on August 5th 2013, the EP was produced by London-based genre-melding maverick Micachu aka Mica Levi of much-loved experimental pop band Micachu and the Shapes. Mica formed the group in 2008 and dropped her celebrated Filthy Friends mixtape the following year, featuring the likes of Ghostpoet, Toddla T, Man Like Me and Kwes alongside Tirzah, credited as ‘Taz’.

 Micachu and Tirzah took a trip down to CDR night at Plastic People in their final year at school – chief goal: to get their track played on the London club’s legendary soundsystem – and saw interest in their music well and truly piqued, in particular around a track titled ‘Go Now’ that the pair made in school circa 2005. Micachu went on to form her band while Tirzah delved into fashion, but the pair stayed close over the years and the ‘I’m Not Dancing’ EP sees them come full circle.

 Mica debuted the infectious title track when she dropped into Boiler Room last year, tearing the place down with a surprise set made up entirely of her own productions and remixes. ‘I’m Not Dancing’ pairs Tirzah’s assertive vocals with sparse off-kilter percussion to mesmerising effect – check it around the 13 minute mark here.

 The beat-driven bittersweet R’n’B of ‘Inside Out’ meanwhile first appeared in demo form as ‘Nothing’ on the Kwesachu Vol. 2 mixtape (you got it, the second in a series of collaborations between Kwes & Micachu), where the pair also covered Kanye West’s ‘Through The Wire’. The short and sweet ‘Ooo Never’ and woozy, aptly titled ‘Slow Jam’ close the EP.

A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

After appearing on Get Physical with some excellent remixes of Ben Hoo recently, Pezzner is now back with two of his own fantastic originals. 

This acclaimed artist is a long standing talent who writes, composes and teaches electronic music to a consistently high standard. The American has credits on Visionquest and Freerange, amongst many others, and put out his Title Track LP on this label back in 2016, now he is back and as on form as ever. 

The atmospheric ‘Squares’ kicks things off in typically deep and smooth fashion, with warm pads and diffuse chords providing the backdrop as supple drums roll below. The gentle percussion persuades you to lose yourself in the groove and wordless but soulful vocal sounds add to the luxurious feel.

‘Wandering’ is the second superb track and is immediately more upbeat. The kicks set a driving tempo and for the next six minutes Pezzner shows off his studio skills with well crafted and unusual synth sounds darting about the mix. Frazzled basslines and metallic percussion also add meat to the bones and ensure this one will amp up any crowd and get them hooked before lifting them up with ethereal voices. 

Both these tracks are the sort of tasteful and timeless efforts Pezzner is so well known for.

This April, Get Physical will put out a second instalment of the essential Cocada compilation series that focusses on emerging talents in Brazil. But before that comes a third and final EP featuring tracks from the first edition, as remixed by Cioz and Tara Brooks.

First up, Italian Cioz reworks Hauy’s ‘Redpath.’ Cioz is a self-taught musician with a smooth and organic sound and holds a DJ residency at the Bauhaus Party. His version of the track is a deep and cathartic one, with wavy drums and molten melodic blips interacting to hypnotic effect. It’s a colourful, paired back but absorbing track to carry
you further into the night. 

Tara Brooks then steps up and brings over a decade’s worth of experience that has seen her play BPM in Mexico, Envision in Costa Rica and Blue Marlin in Ibiza. Her global reputation comes from her uniquely human, soulful style that is showcased here on her version of Ossiam’s ‘When You Say My Name.’ It’s a driving and dynamic house track that has subtle astral ambiance and zoned out chords all sinking you deep into her supple drums.

These are two innovative versions of the still excellent originals and they perfectly pave the way for a much anticipated second edition of the Cocada series.
