Get Physical’s leading South African house star Ryan Murgatroyd makes a welcome return with this stunning new single, once again featuring vital vocalist Sobantwana. 

The cultured Murgatroyd has featured on the label’s latest Words Don’t Come Easy and Africa Gets Physical compilations as well as having remixed and produced plenty of originals. He is a producer with a discography that spans the last ten years and always brings spiritual and musical vibes that shine bright, and with a voice of their own. 

This subtly epic single is rich with enchanting synths that bring real spirituality. The warm, cavernous drums are finished with bobbling percussive sounds and up top is a most beautiful vocal from Sobantwana, a young singer from Nomhala, a village in South Africa’s Eastern Cape region. Her voice is serene and will send shivers down your spine as this track casts a most meaningful spell. 

For anyone looking to get lost in an ethereal house sound, this single perfect.

Get Physical gets ready for the third instalment of its ‘Africa Gets Physical’ series, this time compiled by Blanka Mazimela and featuring a host of exclusive new music.

This compilation series has proved hugely successful for Get Physical with a careful A&R approach that has unearthed a wealth of electronic musical talent from Africa, helping to bring the global attention it deserves. Previous chapters have featured some of the biggest names in the scene, alongside rising talent and this latest offering provides more of the same. Compiler Blanka Mazimela has tracks EPs like ‘Phezulu’ on Get Physical and has been mentored by fellow label regular Ryan Murgatroyd. Blanka is the content head for Soul Candi’s Institute of Music as well as the head of musical composition. He was previously the head lecturer at Soul Candi’s Institute of Music which has music production courses licensed out to over 30 Boston campuses all around South Africa.

The collection kicks off with Blanka Mazimela featuring Korus & Sobantwana and their fantastic ‘Gcwanini’, a deep house groove with afro drums and the most spell binding vocal. From there is a run of previous unreleased tunes taking in gems like the shuffling grooves of ‘Euphoria‘ by Nizhe DeSoul, the bump and grind of Shivers Bw’s ‘Tsodilo’ and darker, stuttering drum programming of Tau and Sterio T’s ‘Afterlife.’

Every track brings a different take on South African house with Aso Tandwa ft Bongani Mehlomakhulu rising up with spiritual vocals and poignant chords on ‘Ithemba’ and the rattling hits and almost UK funky style upbeats of KAARGO’s ‘Dimensions’ really awakening your soul. DJ Clock is up next with a track that will soon be a single on the label, the excellent ‘Mudih’ featuring Kekelingo. Label mainstay Ryan Murgatroyd impresses as always with his
serene ‘Khuzeka.’ The final unreleased treasure is Jamlud’s ‘Your Lips’, an edgy and percussive track that is filled with suspenseful chords and whispered vocals.

This is another essential and eye opening collection of fantastic house tracks from all involved.

Adana Twins step up to deliver their own fantastic take on the standout lead single from DJ T.’s last album, Trans Orient Express. 

This German pair have been bringing their unique sounds to the scene since 2012 with their highly regarded tunes receiving the highest profile support possible, with the likes of Radio 1, Solomun and Tale of Us all falling for their darkly alluring charms. They run their own TAU label as well as releasing on a wealth of others from Dynamic to Watergate and have had an amazing twelve months, with a killer remix for Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State of Consciousness’ on Strictly Rhythm, a 12 month run on the Beatport Indie dance Top 10 with ‘My Computer’ and a chart topping single alongside WhoMadeWho on Kompakt. 

Their fantastic take on DJ T.’s ‘Trans Orient Express’ is a lush one, with plenty of retro-future chords washing over the groove. The whole track is colourful and bright, with a fresh disco energy and warm atmosphere that is truly irresistible.

Just weeks after releasing his new studio album Flourish, Damian Lazarus returns with two cinematic remixes of the lauded Jem Cooke collaboration ‘Into The Sun’. Damian carefully chose two of modern electronic music’s most celebrated producers to reimagine the original, welcoming unique takes from Mano Le Tough and Nathan Fake.

Lazarus remains a curator fixated on showcasing new sounds and emerging talent in everything he does. Much like his tenure breaking artists and pushing boundaries through the influence of Crosstown Rebels, he has brought an innate sense of purpose to Flourish’s remix selection.

The package leads with the distinctly delicate touch of Mano Le Tough, an Irishman who’s quest for deeper dancefloors has made him one of scene’s most in demand artists. Mano’s Crosstown debut adds to an already decorated discography across labels like Pampa, Permanent Vacation and his own Maeve. Adorned with his signature pitch bending and uniquely layered percussion, his remix retains the hopefulness embodied by the original while priming it for the return of rave.

Nathan Fake brings a different set of tools to the package, wielding a sense of grit and atmosphere that can be heard throughout his Blizzards album released this year on his own Cambria Instruments. His remix retains the broken beat energy and haunting mood of ‘Into The Sun’ while remapping its melody for both beauty and cadence. It is this elevated understanding of texture and suspense that has earned mainstay status from Ninja Tune and Border Community, while attracting remixes for Radiohead, Jon Hopkins and Tiefschwarz to name a few.

Brazilian duo Bruce Leroys work with One Line To An Angle for a brilliant new single on Get Physical that comes boosted by remixes from Ninetoes and Bruce Leroys themselves.

Diogo Vaille and Marcelo Abreu have put out their wares on Yoshitoshi and Parquet after a long and storied history of playing back home. Now with a wider reputation for their warm, organic sounds, they are known for drawing on disco, funk, garage and hip hop to cook up their compelling house music.

Their stunning single in collaboration with One Line To an Angle is ‘Cassette Tape’, a dark, mid- tempo house track with spoken word vocals that are complex and compelling. The swaying drums are run through with smeared bass and a trippy synth unfolds up top with an intoxicating life of its own, and the whole effect is majestically hypnotic as well as perfectly original.

Remixing is Ninetoes, a Moon Harbour associate and key member of the wider underground tech house scene who always embodies a fresh sound that evolves with each new release. His version is more driving and chunky, with warm drums drawing you in as watery synths bring colour, fluidity and charm.
Last of all, Bruce serve up a radio version that sounds like an improvised and live rework with live drums, drawn out synths and a slowed down groove that pulls you in ever deeper.

This is a perfectly formed new package of brilliantly unusual house grooves from Get Physical.

A lot has happened in the last 20 years of dance music, but one constant has been Get Physical right at the sharp end of the scene.
