Madloch's Sound Avenue imprint continues a strong spring season by showcasing new interpretations of Eric Lune's ‘Embers'. Originally released in October of 2019, it's smooth yet euphoric moods saw play from Hernan Cattaneo, while also being one of the Aussie artist's best selling tracks of the year. Now looking to revive this musical gem for the warm months ahead, Sound Avenue invites Death On The Balcony and GMJ to re-imagine the track.

Sitting at the heart of the organic house underground are Death On The Balcony. Arriving on the scene more than a decade ago, the UK duo have compiled an impressive resume, highlighted by releases on All Day I Dream, Akbal Music, Do Not Sit On The Furniture and Kindisch. In what has proven to be a fruitful creative partnership the duo continue to earn the praise of their contemporaries and tastemakers alike. Now following a remix for Pablo Bolivar's Seven Villas imprint, Death On The Balcony debut on Sound Avenue with a gorgeous take on ‘Embers'. Coming in smooth and percussion, it's a rich, soulful and incredibly charming nine minute journey. Redolent tones, ghostly vocal fragments and exotic drums build an inviting narrative, as strummy hooks and melodic flurries steal the air at opportune moments. Perfectly timed, the main break brings a greater sense of calm, a heartfelt interlude of sorts, before a stripped down section provides an energy bridge into a percussive drop and charismatic finale.

Completing the release and providing the second and final interpretation of ‘Embers' is GMJ who makes his label debut. Based in Melbourne, Australia GMJ aka Gavin Martin has been a primary figure in the progressive house scene for over a decade. His passion for deep and emotive electronic music has seen him land releases on the industry's most esteemed imprints. From Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music to Cid Inc's Replug Records and UK behemoth Anjunadeep, it's GMJ's storytelling style that continues to surprise and inspire even the genre's most discerning fans. Now following an EP for his newly formed ‘Meanwhile' imprint, GMJ debuts on Sound Avenue with a stunning rendition of ‘Embers'. With a perfect blend of creativity and emotion, the Aussie artist deconstructs the main elements into a gorgeous effervescent theme. Symphonic overlays and buzzing sonics marry perfectly with the euphoric motifs, while a robust foundation translate those impassioned qualities to the dance floor. Rising talent Bachir Salloum drops three-tracker "Head Above Water" on 3rd Avenue. The title track starts deceptively laid-back, deep-layered muffled bass giving a slow build up before a distant horn riff adds a mysterious, almost haunted air. As the track gathers speed, rippling piano arpeggios fill out the colour palette. 

"Drops of Wisdom" brings a more playful beat, seemingly, until that insidious stealthy bass gets into your head and stays there under sprinklings of bell and chime notes in almost jazzy free-form sequences. An urgent build to a break halfway changes the mood along with a deep growling riff. With "No Strings", it's a bounding beat, with a whispered, distorted vocal giving a disturbing feel. A sustained breakdown midway brings in twangling guitar-like sounds. 

"I made these tracks after last year's trip to ADE, one of my favourite festivals", Bachir says. "With so many great artists, playing amazing music, and the city Itself having such a special feel to it, it's impossible to come back from there without some inspiration! I've always admired the Avenue label, so it's great to be releasing on this imprint!"

Yorkshire-based producer & sound designer Alexander Church is an adventurous artist, on the scene since the mid 90s, making everything from melodic soundscapes to industrial techno under a range of aliases. Without setting any creative boundaries, he draws consistent inspiration from his own deep thinking and desire to tell a personal story.

His Configurations of Self imprint, fusing academic teachings, music, and passion for visual media, has grown significantly since its inception in early 2019, seeing frequent guest appearances by the likes of @jodybarrmusic & @jameswelsh. Each piece of music represents emotional responses to the processes, feelings, and self-awareness that Church has experienced through his study of psychology and counselling.

Toronto-based artist juSt b has spent the better part of the last seven years dedicated to refining a diverse palette and style which is unquestionably, uniquely her own. As an accomplished DJ, radio show host, label manager, published writer, industry ambassador, and genuine story-teller, with no shortage of curveballs in her repertoire, she’s never afraid to take risks and explore new avenues of expression. With a top-rated monthly DIFM show, Undercurrents, and three European tours in 2019, she also acts as co-manager for Getting Deeper and heads up UK imprint, Configurations of Self, alongside label boss Alexander Church.

This new release, Configurations 12, features juSt b’s smooth, thought-provoking and mindful vocals inspired by humanistic view points that both artists share, delivered as life-affirming musings that add a fantastic layer of emotional depth and positivity to Church’s always avant-garde futurist productions.

The opener ‘In The Field’ swirls with spoken word vocals around the theme of the complex relationship between a counsellor and their client. They place you in a dream-like state as harmonica pads ripple all around and deep, smooth beats move you onwards. An instrumental is included which makes for just as celestial and cathartic listening as you are suspended in the lush production.

The second superb offering, ‘Curious Paradox’, is another post-rave mix of IDM, techno and ambient, with the alluring vocal element fusing teachings from renowned psychologist, Carl Rogers, encouraging you to accept who you are today so that change becomes easier. It’s a deeply uplifting trip to the outer edges of our galaxy on gorgeously mellifluous pads, arps and melodies. The instrumental strips back the track to the mind-expanding synth work and makes for an even more detached affair.

These are tracks that connect on a mental as well as physical level, with moving psychological overtones that make them full body experiences.
