With previous support from some of the underground’s finest, including John Digweed, Nick Warren, Jamie Stevens, Animal Trainer, Gai Barone, and BBC’s Erol Alkan & Tom Ravenscroft, the innovative, psychology-inspired label & its experimental offshoot, Life Scripts, has seen consistent exceptional output in just a few years. For the Configurations series, that translates now to the 16th EP since its inception in October 2019.

juSt b again demonstrates her deep-thinking lyrical prowess with a new pair of well-crafted mindful narratives, this time themed around renowned Canadian Transactional Psychologist, Eric Berne, fused with Church’s signature rolling melodies. The first original, ‘Ego States’, begins by probing the depths of our most basic social interactions with the question ‘what’s really going on’ within the parent-adult-child dynamic & the often negative lifelong behaviours resulting from confusion & shifting of these roles.

James Welsh, a frequent studio partner & regular on the label, transforms the six minutes into a bold futuristic dance cut, boasting an acidy electro bass riff and sultry vox chop which adds a layer of warmth & moodiness to this edgy rework.

Next up, ‘Games People Play’ and its jabbing tribalesque kick/snare combo commence a more sinister portrayal of the various manipulative mind & power games we all play in our daily relationships. An eerie hypnotic synth line twists its way beyond the drop, creating a more nebulous atmosphere, perfect for the darkest of dingy dance floors.

Rounding out the 4-tracker, Berlin’s Vincenzo once again adds his classic soulful swing, giving the ominous original a lighter, playful bassline and airy daytime feel, while preserving juSt b’s vocal impact.

Configurations 16 represents another intellectual & provocative offering of standout productions from four high calibre artists.

A lot has happened since Fixate released his last full length record, ‘What Goes Around’, on Exit Records in 2017. After putting out two Bandcamp EPs (‘Glare’ & ‘Confusion’) and several remixes—including his ‘Ripgroove Refix’, which famously went viral on Sherelle’s 2019 Boiler Room set and was eventually released as official remix on Ice Cream Records—he now presents his self-titled debut album ‘Fixate’.

Developed over five years, the project showcases Fixate’s sound palette in all its variety, a diversity of taste that’s reflected in his supporters: he’s garnered attention from icons like Andy C, Goldie, and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, as well as underground tastemakers like Call Super, Toddla T, and Skee Mask. Ross From Friends closed off his 2020 Room Isolation set with Fixate’s breaky acid number ‘On Edge’; Sicaria Sound spun the dub-influenced album opener ‘Ruminate’ in their sets; and Madam X had sub-heavy track ‘Gristle’ doing the rounds. 

The LP also sees several collaborations: Fixate worked with DnB legend DRS on ‘Down’, pairing his dark instrumental with equally dark subjects. On percussive hard-hitter ‘Backpedal’, he experiments with halftime grooves alongside fellow Exit artist Itoa. Dubstep producer Cimm makes an appearance on eski-influenced ‘Back to BC’. Finally, ‘Programmed To Fail’ sees the artist teaming up with label boss dBridge to create a soundtrack for AI world domination.

Tha_Guts is a musician and multi-instrumentalist brazilian producer and also label manager at dsrptv rec. His interest for the sound narratives as a means of finding stories in the mixture and the clash between layers, gave rise to his first records. Musically, his sonority has as main characteristics the collages, samplers and loops of organic and electronic beats, focusing mainly on the creation of abstract narratives based on different sound perspectives. With releases by labels Gop Tun, Tropical Twista Records, Massa Records, Sonido Trópico, Cocada Music, Goma Rec, Kindisch and dsrptv rec.

Mycelium is the name given to the set of hyphae of multicellular fungi such as mushrooms. These hyphae expand and connect underground creating a network with all plant species allowing communication between the beings of the habitat for their development.
In Mycelium Network, Tha_Guts walks towards his ecosystem of origin, allowing our imagination to enter into a lonely dance in search of new possibilities of contact and connection networks that strengthen the dialogue between the inhabitants and their environment. In this organic/synthetic landscape, in search of oxygen and delirium, our body is surrounded by tender and spongy textures that pierce the pores of our skin, seeking the aesthetic mimesis which makes the work an integral part of the environment itself. 

In the exchange of narratives on the album, the artist invites us to dance in his own time, presenting an ambience in which sounds exist with the purpose of fulfilling a macrostructural function in the development of the whole. Manifesting that, to exist as a group and remain, we need to expand the current configuration to an adjacent communication model, in which each one aware of their existence can offer ideas and nutrients to the next.

The universe is - and it’ll always be - unstable and volatile. In this tangible body that we wear as Now, we feel insecure in the face of the immateriality of time and the oscillation of atoms. Therefore, amidst the noise and delicate ambiences that guide the work, we walk lost among the clouds in a dream without a script and without an outcome. Walking aimlessly is sometimes necessary and pleasurable. If electronic music has always been aerial and liquid, Mycelium Network emerges from behind new limits with a certain anthropophagic controversy, remembering that dance is not the art of creating empty gestures.

Their main release since the label's inception, it is their first album release and it represents the essence of the label's musical background. 

It will be an epic release with copies in digital, K7 and vinyl versions and already has confirmed articles in Resident Advisor, Monkeybuzz, Monoise, DJ Mag Latam, DJ Mag Es, among others.

With the sixth release on onformrecords comes a brand new three-tracker filled with a genuine Balearic-Renaissance uplifting vibe, sonically pleasing to the ears and we love it! 

 “Hollow” is OPR8's debut release on our label and it packs a real punch with its gentle whispering tones layered on solid drums and a killer bass line,The synth line and xylophone sample really compliment this track which takes a totally different direction with the surprising drop a quarter of the way through that adds another layer to this well crafted piece of dance floor magic 

“Fading” has a real sense of euphoria and reminds us of the early years of Ibiza, With the buzzy  arpeggiated synth that playfully flows over a hench bass line, Distant strings play out in the background whilst delayed claps and clever effects really push this track forward 

“Caramel” feels really light but has a real depth of quality in its production with its cosmic pads and melodic percussion, the spoken old school reggae sample really compliments this track especially when the clap hits giving it a real-time forward moving vibe and a sense of raw emotion completing this gem of a an EP that was mainly made on hardware and mixed down in Ableton.

Sharing a Berlin studio together for five years before they started working together, Aikin and Monolog’s work together is a testament to the power of collaboration to elevate creative and technical processes. Two styles collide to create something unlike either, the results are explosive, raw and out-of-the-box.

Monolog, an alias of Mads Lindgren since 1999, is famed for intense, densely layered noise-based experiments that push technological limits and fuse his diverse experiences in metal, noise, jazz and DnB. Collaborating with Aikin was a process of slimming his production style down, harnessing the mesmeric power of rhythmic repetition. For Aikin on the other hand, a seasoned DJ whose subtly cinematic productions have appeared on labels like Mord and Gegen Berlin, this collaboration was about reaching for new extremes. Given full creative control by Evar, the result is raw and unrestrained. In Aikin’s own words: “I'd consider this record one of my most savage, but also thanks to that, the most technically accomplished.”

Mattr recently made his Renaissance debut with the hair-raising ‘Shutter’ on their VA, ‘Merin EP Vol.4’. Although a distinct style of his own there’s a tingling beauty to his work that’s reminiscent of Bicep, Gidge or Christian Loffler. Consider it emotive electronica with the feels turned up to 11, which Mattr confirms wasn’t that difficult to achieve with the remix given the source, “One of the signature parts of the track is its haunting, top line pad, so I built the remix around that, adding my own mid whilst glitching-up the vocals to provide that all important edge. I had real fun updating this renowned Renaissance classic”

Released in 1992, Mephisto's ’State Of Mind (Quiet Mix)’ was a standout during Renaissance's formative years at their legendary Venue 44 home in Mansfield. Its classic status was further compounded 18 months later when Sasha and John Digweed included it on the ‘Mix Collection Vol.1’ and introduced it to the ears of the wider world.

With its title meaning ‘flower’ in Dutch, Bloem EP sees Maroki depart somewhat from the colder acid and electro inflections of most of his previous releases, favouring instead a sunnier vibe and a focus on melody and texture.

‘ICBT1’ embodies this sugar-coated departure perfectly. High-frequency metallic synth plucks form a dynamic melody, making up just one element of a dense soundscape which also compiles a reverb-laden cymbal break, elated flutes and pitched-up vocal chops. The title track, together with ‘Forgot You’ strips things back a little, both driven by an understated deep house beat. ‘Bloem’ sees the EP at its most gentle with bubbly xylophonic tinkles that evoke the hypnotic allure of K-Lone’s ‘Cape Cira’ LP; whilst ‘Forgot You’ gets its melody from the low ends.

‘Forgot Me’ is its moody older sibling and the most minimal track of them all, showcasing the darker underbelly to Maroki’s sound with eerie underwater arpeggios and hollow percussion. This atmosphere sticks around for ‘Why’: an entrancing full-bodied breaks track sure to be closing DJ sets this Summer.

Heralding a new release that captures the essence of the Meanwhile Horizons sound, Weird Sounding Dude now delivers “Passing Thoughts”, a sparkling musical narrative that navigates a clear path through the serene blue waters of glistening melody and rolling rhythmic waves.

Making his Meanwhile Horizons debut, “Passing Thoughts” encapsulates the Bangalore based artist’s penchant for chunky grooves and rich melodic layers. The album's dizzying dreamscapes took shape during Melbourne's world-record long-term COVID lockdowns, as Erin lost herself completely in the process of music making, honing her unique sound on an album that reflects both the anxiety of the times and her own unshakeable sense of playfulness.

Inspired by auteurs from Proc Fiskal to Emma-Jean Thackray to Drexciya, Erin's productions are packed with intense detail but also a head-spinning sense of wonder. That tension between joy and anxiety informs the exhilarating hybrid sound of Threshold, a sound that she has explored in mixes for BBC 6 Music (Tom Ravenscroft), DUMMY & KEXP, and that has found her support from Gorilla vs Bear, COLORS, FBi Radio and DJs Nina Las Vegas, Andy Garvey and Air Max '97.

“Threshold refers to the feeling of being at boiling point - that intensity you feel when everything is just about to overwhelm you.

I made this music during a very intense time in my life, when Melbourne went into the first of its long-term lockdowns. I wasn’t working, so my life revolved entirely around music creation. Suddenly I had all of this time to create music, which was amazing - until it wasn’t.

Listening back, there is a tension present in all the songs. Every creation has such bursting energy of emotion – the songs became the vehicle for a lot of pent up feelings and things that I didn’t have words for and still don’t.

Threshold feels like the point at which all of those things demanded to be known, and came spilling over into my songs. It is the culmination of a lot of things, and best represents my music making style and intensely detailed creation process up until now.”

An artist who has risen to prominence in both the live and production arenas, Gavin Griffin finds himself at the centre of an ever-vibrant Melbourne music scene. Home to a host of iconic names and a sound that helped define the progressive house genre in the 2000s, his GMJ moniker has continued to shape the modern progressive sound. With over 400 production credits to his name, a century alongside long-term partner, Matter, GMJ has seen his music adorn the likes of Balance Music, Anjunadeep and Proton Music.

Opening his solo account on Meanwhile with October 2020’s “Mood Medicine”, collaborative EPs with Matter have seen “Lost on Origin”, “The Path / Perfect Storm” and “Eldarin” light up the label, alongside remixes for Simos Tagias, Roger Martinez and Matter himself.

Opening with the title track, “Empty to Fill” is a chunky, subterranean groove-fuelled monster. Bristling with menacing vibe, lighter moments come courtesy of floating synth motifs that glide to the fore in a stripped back breakdown of delicate keys and gloriously delayed sequences. A pulsating white-noise riser heralds a return of the club-friendly groove and gorgeous melodic flow in the latter stages.

Continuing with the trademark rolling groove that watermarks the GMJ sound, “Door of Light” sparkles with arpeggiated backdrop and reverse-reverb vocal breaths. Evolving immaculately, stratified sonic layers flourish as they entwine together in organic fashion. Counterpoint motifs coruscate above pulsing white-noise swells as the aptly named track waxes and wanes in perfect dancefloor cadence, before reaching a rousing crescendo in an immersive sonic tapestry.

The final piece sees the popping percussive vibrancy of “Stage Flight” sit atop a stereo-panned bass groove. Building over its 7-minute duration, syncopated synth riffs lock tightly into the driving framework that reaches its culmination with a chorus of breathy pads and a drop back into the rolling bassline and mirrored synth sequence. The resultant track is a powerful snapshot straight out of the GMJ production playbook.

Chock full of rhythmic force and multi-faceted layers of sound, “Empty to Fill” displays a sparkling 24-carat hallmark of the GMJ sound.

The _originalmix of Radiowaving is a forceful slab of synth driven house music, coated with neon melodies and swirling atmospherics on a similar tip to last year’s Sweetness (Back to the Dance) EP. A twisting synth throb and pumping breakbeats give way to a deep space breakdown, where a synth choir floats in zero G around the core of a simmering plutonium coil acid line.

The _altmix is a more loopy and linear take, keeping the slap-bass-on-a-303 acid hook but toning down some of the starry-eyed vibes of the original, providing a trackier option for the digital record bag.

Having shared the decks with everyone from Cubicolor to Martin Roth, and having a debut EP on Bedrock earlier this year, Canada's juSt b is swiftly becoming a name too hard to ignore. Her debut release on Balance delivers an exceptionally cerebral track that will sit flush in many sets. Also featured are four quality remixes that take in everything from deep techno, to breaks and more…

The deep beat on 'Light Sweeper' is undeniable with its mysterious energy. Glacial synths sweep the top end while being punctured by pondering piano stabs. There is bipolar nature to the production: warm and enveloping in the lows yet cold and wintry in the highs. It's a steady rhythm intent on intoxicating you.

The @audioglider remix reconstitutes the original into a thick, almost Amen breaks like direction. The synths are blown up to an optimal size and layered into a melodic sequence, keeping the original mystery. The breakdown is progressive house bliss, melancholy without being saccharine, before crashing back into the rhythm with added vocal by juSt b and soaring strings.

@jameswelsh's deep techno take is filled with percolating percussive hits and melodic arps weaving in and out of each other with total abandon. Featuring a considerably bigger kick, this is one to kickstart the main room.

The @mattrmusic remix starts off minimal with a deep meta physical engine, a hulking rhythm that slowly moves forward. Two separate breakdowns introduce a rising melody soaked in emotion, and the latter explodes into a 4/4 pattern that will sound divine on a dusty festival dancefloor.

If you're after the perfect opening track, look no further than the elegant remix from @ev3rsun. With its delightful opening 2 minute sequence, it is one part ambient and one part secret waiting to be told. It breaks into a gentle rhythm that sets the mood for what's to follow.

Pattison has purposefully made Asyn’s airy vocal the star of the show. With added trademark effects running throughout, we think that Come A Bit Closer is Pattison’s best work to date.
