GhostlyCast #92 comes from Reggie Dokes, a DJ, producer, and composer considered by DJ Mag to be one of several artists keeping the sound of Detroit alive internationally. His output spans work in film/television and releases with various dance labels, including his own imprint Psychostasia Recordings. "Dokes is equally comfortable producing hip-hop, house and techno but his tracks rarely fall so neatly into such categories, carrying an otherworldliness that's as distinctive as it is difficult to define," says Resident Advisor, for their recent Exchange interview. His Ghostlycast reflects that unbound spirit and respect for the past; the potent mix begins in Chicago and works its way into Detroit, featuring tracks old and new.

'Oh man, I’ve got good news all around! First of all, even if there wasn’t anything to celebrate, this mix from Heathered Pearls is absolutely superb! Almost two hours in length it navigates many favorite genres and artists represented by the Michigan based label, Ghostly International. Just look at this amazing tracklist! In 2009, Ghostly celebrated its 10 year anniversary as a label, with many shows across the globe. This year, the label is commemorating a decade of performances at Decibel Festival. The 10th Ghostly showcase at Decibel will feature live performances from Dauwd, Beacon, Lusine and Shigeto (Friday, September 27th at the Crocodile) and you know that I’ll be there all night!

Meanwhile, Jakub Alexander (that’s Heathered Pearls), a curator of the ISO50 blog and founder of Moodgadget Records, has just released a digital remix album, titled Loyal Reworks, featuring many great artists, including Sun Glitters, loscil, Markus Guentner and Lawrence. When a deservedly hyped label like No.19 Music states that its biggest release is about to drop then a certain amount of attention is due and that’s exactly what the label’s 19th release, Tanner Ross’ ‘bSide EP’, deserves.

Despite having clocked up an impeccable discography that takes in collaborations with Soul Clap, Claude Vonstroke as well as output for Freerange, Mothership, Culprit and K7!  this is Ross’ first solo release under his given name and is causing a enormous buzz via consistent plays from Art Department, Wolf + Lamb, Soul Clap, Crosstown Rebels main-man Damian Lazarus and more. 

Adding to the two stunning originals, ‘bSide’ and ‘For You ft. Flo Night’, and pushing things into unmissable territory is a brilliant remix of the latter from Crosstown Rebels / Wolf & Lamb family member, Deniz Kurtel.

‘bSide’ itself is a mid-tempo, lazy groove which gently opens out with warm delayed vocals and creeping drums - hypnotic and subtle, it’s one hell of an intro but the drop into the fat, sumptuous bass hook is pure joy. Steadily joined by soaring, high-end keyboard licks that balance the track beautifully, there’s a sudden realisation the title of ‘bSide’ is a in-joke that’s being shared.

‘For You ft. Flo Night’ continues proceedings with a sexy, blissed out pace. Thudding, raw  and mechanical disco drums underpin yet another rich, dominant Moog bass that oozes P, G and just about every other funk there is. Floating soundscapes, gloriously sliding top lines and Flo Night’s effected vox ebb and flow like liquid while a beat-perfect arrangement allows every element to truly sing which makes for a timeless slice of music. 

Rounding things off is the prodigious talent that is Deniz Kurtel with her version of ‘For You ft. Flo Night’. Building from skittering percussive hits, dubbed-out vocals and spacious ambience into an incredibly catchy bassline, it’s a remix that unravels and combines melodies so impressively it begs repeated listens. 

With a full length for Wolf & Lamb in progress plus collaborations with Deniz Kurtel  and Soul Clap on the way, this is an essential piece of listening and one that celebrates a contemporary star….

'Kiyoko is a new project from Joe Mcbride (Synkro) and partner Jack Lever (Bering Strait). Joe and Jack set about writing an album purely from old analogue gear, circuit bent kids toys, live drums, guitars and samples from old vinyl and Japanese flavored soundscapes. The result is their debut LP 'Sea Of Trees' one of Auxiliary records' most adventurous releases to date. This is their very first remix!

"We were driving through the deserts of California when we hatched the plan to release a boxed set of the singles from Skying, unaware that it would balloon into the monster that it did. We started off small, just one version per single. However, through chance encounters and wanting to involve more people whose music excited us, the box soon grew into an impressive collection of sonic tapestries and hypnotic grooves and it became apparent that this was no longer about the singles. It was now about this new music which had used the different elements of Skying as a springboard to other ideas. We encouraged everyone involved to be as obtuse as possible, to get as far away from the original source material as they could. The results are stunning, and I think it's just a shame we couldn't have done more."

It's hard not to know Mark Farina's name as an electronic music fan. He's developed a signature blend of house music — dubbed "Mushroom Jazz" — across a series of essential mixtapes since the mid-90s. For GhostlyCast #88, Mark shares a mix of techno and house that speaks to his roots as a Midwestern dance music fan and Gramaphone record shop employee. "Growing up in Chicago in the '80s was a great place to hear new music. As a young teenager going to Wax Trax Records and Medusa's, I bridged from the industrial sounds into house, techno, and acid tracks around 1988. At that time, I went to Detroit with Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka to record as Symbols and Instruments for KMS Records. Chez Damier was head of A & R there. Metroplex was next door and Transmat upstairs from there. Chicago and Detroit had a shared vibe, which I still love."

A Colourful Storm is a record label based in Melbourne, Australia that releases a diverse range of electronic and otherworldly sounds. This GhostlyCast is by label runner Moopie and friend Bayu. Together they have released two compilations: I Won’t Have To Think About You (2017) and Still in my Arms (2020). Made in two different places during the first lockdown in Melbourne, their mix collects old favorites and other music they came across while researching Still In My Arms, spanning unearthed IDM, techno, and indie-pop gems.
