GhostlyCast #92 comes from Reggie Dokes, a DJ, producer, and composer considered by DJ Mag to be one of several artists keeping the sound of Detroit alive internationally. His output spans work in film/television and releases with various dance labels, including his own imprint Psychostasia Recordings. "Dokes is equally comfortable producing hip-hop, house and techno but his tracks rarely fall so neatly into such categories, carrying an otherworldliness that's as distinctive as it is difficult to define," says Resident Advisor, for their recent Exchange interview. His Ghostlycast reflects that unbound spirit and respect for the past; the potent mix begins in Chicago and works its way into Detroit, featuring tracks old and new.

Houston’s newest and most extensive festival, freshdark Fest, will take over and occupy the minds and hearts of this great city’s music enthusiasts on June 20th, 2015 at the Last Concert Café on 1403 Nance Street. freshDark aims to create an imaginative and inspiring environment that seeks to expose and foster an appreciation for many emerging artists, ranging from Electronica, Funk, Acid Jazz, Broken Beat, Soul, Reggae, Hip-Hop—future sounds generated in an organic fashion. 
Headlining this inaugural boutique festival are Shafiq Husayn of Sa-Ra Creative Partners who have produced music for seminal artists such as Kanye West, Andre 3000, Robert Glasper, Bilal, and countless other music aficionados. The co-headliners, OSHUN, are fresh off of the Red Bull Sound Select stage, AFROPUNK FEST, and Broccoli Fest working most recently with Neo Soul’s reigning queen, Erykah Badu. 

Curators of freshDark have worked tirelessly to bring the most adventurous artists, initiating an annual festival with the hope to bring together a coalition of local and international artist who specialize in pushing sonic terrain that has yet to be discovered.

With a resume that includes Åme and The Acid, it's no surprise that newfangled duo Howling (Frank Weidemann and Ry X respectively) are onto some heady shit. White Visitation is the alias of Mexico City based DJ/Producer Nicolas Guerrero. With releases on Style Upon Styles, LIES, RVNG Intl, Blank Slate and a performance at MUTEK Montreal 2016 that left people spinning, Guerrero is primed for a prolific 2017. For his GhostlyCast, Guerrero said: "I'd been compiling music for a couple of months thinking I was overdue for a mix. Some records I picked up this summer, along with some stuff I've found online, arranged digitally for edits and tweaks. I hope the mix takes you somewhere."

It is still only a couple of years since Moire first emerged, but already he operates in his own distinctive sound world. It is a place his broken house and techno is murky and disorientating, ambiguous and otherworldly. So far it has come on cult labels like Spectral Sound, Ninja Tune and Actress’ Work Discs in the form of some essential EPs and an LP, and now he steps up to our mix series ahead of the arrival of his second full length on Ghostly International. 

Over the course of an hour the Londoner lays down some loose and hazy house that gets more and more rugged as the grooves unfold. It’s lo-fi but stirringly emotive stuff that ends in a place of refracted melodies and heavenly vocals that really lift you out of the real world.

Bedouin Sahrawi is a DJ and music collector from Western Sahara currently living in the Canary Islands but born in the Sahrawi refugee camps of Tindouf, Algeria. Moving to Spain opened him up to a new world of western music and he effortlessly braids the music his desert roots with the duende and melancholy of Spanish music.  His GhostlyCast traverses an expanse of genres, skipping and twisting like a whirling wind across open sand and over open ocean.  Stop at any given point in its two hour span, and you could find yourself soaked in Balearic sunshine, lost in the meditative turnings of folk samples, or being shepherded along by hazy, bubbling acid bass lines.  The vast space of the horizon swallows each echoing note as the mix pulls you into the deeper heart of the desert.

It's hard not to know Mark Farina's name as an electronic music fan. He's developed a signature blend of house music — dubbed "Mushroom Jazz" — across a series of essential mixtapes since the mid-90s. For GhostlyCast #88, Mark shares a mix of techno and house that speaks to his roots as a Midwestern dance music fan and Gramaphone record shop employee. "Growing up in Chicago in the '80s was a great place to hear new music. As a young teenager going to Wax Trax Records and Medusa's, I bridged from the industrial sounds into house, techno, and acid tracks around 1988. At that time, I went to Detroit with Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka to record as Symbols and Instruments for KMS Records. Chez Damier was head of A & R there. Metroplex was next door and Transmat upstairs from there. Chicago and Detroit had a shared vibe, which I still love."

A Colourful Storm is a record label based in Melbourne, Australia that releases a diverse range of electronic and otherworldly sounds. This GhostlyCast is by label runner Moopie and friend Bayu. Together they have released two compilations: I Won’t Have To Think About You (2017) and Still in my Arms (2020). Made in two different places during the first lockdown in Melbourne, their mix collects old favorites and other music they came across while researching Still In My Arms, spanning unearthed IDM, techno, and indie-pop gems.
