With this mix Heidi asks to please learn more about and consider donating to: I would love to highlight a new initiative called Synth Library NYC that I am helping to launch, together with the talented Brooklyn sound artist Cy X.  Synth Library NYC will open in May 2021 as a community education and music hub providing access to synthesizers, modular gear, recording equipment and other electronic musical instruments for people of all experience levels with priority access to BIPOC and those of marginalized genders.  Individuals will be able to ‘check-out’ an instrument and take it home for 3 weeks, just like one would borrow a book from the public library. Synth Library NYC also plans to have virtual and in-person workshops, synth meet ups, collaborative performances and other engagement activities to foster connection and help encourage those with less experience. We are grateful to be consulting with the founders of Fem Synth Lab in Los Angeles who have paved the way in this concept of community building, and Powrplnt, a network of Brooklyn artists dedicated to providing equal access to digital arts education, where we are currently residents. GhostlyCast #92 comes from Reggie Dokes, a DJ, producer, and composer considered by DJ Mag to be one of several artists keeping the sound of Detroit alive internationally. His output spans work in film/television and releases with various dance labels, including his own imprint Psychostasia Recordings. "Dokes is equally comfortable producing hip-hop, house and techno but his tracks rarely fall so neatly into such categories, carrying an otherworldliness that's as distinctive as it is difficult to define," says Resident Advisor, for their recent Exchange interview. His Ghostlycast reflects that unbound spirit and respect for the past; the potent mix begins in Chicago and works its way into Detroit, featuring tracks old and new.

The Spectral iteration of the Ghostly 15 mixes comes courtesy of Derek Plaslaiko (who recently completed a grueling 12 hour Boiler Room out of his home in Berlin: http://boilerroom.tv/recording/derek-plaslaiko-12-hour-set/). Some words from Plaslaiko on the emergence of Spectral Sound & the mix he has curated below:

"I met Sam Valenti IV in the later years of the 90's just after he started the Ghostly International label. I feel like I almost instantly connected with Ghostly due to the music, but also because of the asthetic. Sam & I had more than a couple conversations about labels like Factory and 4AD and how the art was synonymously as important as the music it accompanied. I couldn't agree with him more!

As Ghostly grew, I think Sam realized that the more dancefloor-oriented music should almost have it's own place. Enter Spectral Sound.

Spectral Sound often gets confused as Ghostly. For instance, I am considered a Spectral Sound DJ, yet there are plenty of times that promoters end up simply putting Ghostly International next to my name. This doesn't offend me or anything, but the labels are quite different, and equally as important in my eyes. Spectral went on to help pave the way for what would end up being the "minimal" sound embraced first in Berlin, and then the rest of the world. However, I wouldn't just pin Spectral down as a "minimal" label. I feel Spectral (as well as Ghostly) is a great example of a dance music oriented label putting out music they like regardless of what genre it falls under. House, Acid House, Deep House, Tech House, Hard Techno, Deep Techno, Minimal Techno... you can find all of this and a lot more within Spectral's vast catalog.

So, Sam has asked me to pick 15 of my favorite Spectral Sound tracks and I gotta say... this list is a really hard one to make! How do I chose only 15 cuts of this incredible catalog? And even if I did, how much of it would be occupied by tracks produced by Matthew, Tadd and Todd? To pick 15 favorites from just those 3 artists alone would be a difficult challenge, as they are easily 3 of my favorite producers of dance music out there! So, I tried to limit my picks of them to each of their project names.

I had been asked to to the mix compilation that accompanied the Spectral Sound Vol 2 compilation that came out in 2008. So, there are MANY of my favorite Spectral cuts on there (you can find it on Spotify). I mention this only because there are a few repeats in this list, but I just couldn't help myself because I still play those tracks to this day.

Nearly a year after producing Vybz Kartel’s “Kingston Story” and fresh from delivering Popcaan’s “Get Gyal Easy,” Dre Skull returns with a brand new riddim, featuring four original vocals from some of the biggest Caribbean artists. 

The Loudspeaker Riddim, which is not just a name but also a serving suggestion, is a powerful and emotive track, with lingering echoes that 
build and fold over each other until the dancehall bassline kicks in and a minimal synth-stab leaves the track wide open for the vocalist to shine. King of the Dancehall, Beenie Man, sets the riddim alight with his fast- flowing ode to the female form on “Hot Like Fire,” while Mixpak family member Natalie Storm delivers a classic braggadocios take on “Rock The Runway.” Normally found voicing the upper echelons of bpm, Soca Monarch Machel Montano makes a rare appearance on a dancehall riddim, keeping his energy intact for an expressive tune dedicated to winery – “Go Down.” Popcaan rounds off the release with 'The System', an epic, conscious track that sees the young deejay describe the trials and struggles of ghetto youth in the face of the system. 

The Loudspeaker Riddim is not only a testament to the versatility of the artists featured, but to dancehall itself, a proud addition to the ever-growing Mixpak dancehall catalogue.

It's hard not to know Mark Farina's name as an electronic music fan. He's developed a signature blend of house music — dubbed "Mushroom Jazz" — across a series of essential mixtapes since the mid-90s. For GhostlyCast #88, Mark shares a mix of techno and house that speaks to his roots as a Midwestern dance music fan and Gramaphone record shop employee. "Growing up in Chicago in the '80s was a great place to hear new music. As a young teenager going to Wax Trax Records and Medusa's, I bridged from the industrial sounds into house, techno, and acid tracks around 1988. At that time, I went to Detroit with Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka to record as Symbols and Instruments for KMS Records. Chez Damier was head of A & R there. Metroplex was next door and Transmat upstairs from there. Chicago and Detroit had a shared vibe, which I still love."

A Colourful Storm is a record label based in Melbourne, Australia that releases a diverse range of electronic and otherworldly sounds. This GhostlyCast is by label runner Moopie and friend Bayu. Together they have released two compilations: I Won’t Have To Think About You (2017) and Still in my Arms (2020). Made in two different places during the first lockdown in Melbourne, their mix collects old favorites and other music they came across while researching Still In My Arms, spanning unearthed IDM, techno, and indie-pop gems.

BIO:
NYC-based singer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ and producer Heidi Sabertooth has a serious love for hardware. Grit-laced drum loops, vintage acid and a tide of unruly sound clatters forth from
her studio. She's been creating her unique brand of electronics since 2012, pushing out beautiful noise, from the delicate to the jarring. She is resident of NYC-based Lost Soul Enterprises, host on The Lot Radio and curator of Bossa Nova Civic Club’s Techno Support Group party. Her highly lauded live hardware performances and vinyl-heavy dj sets have cemented her own place among NYC’s techno community and beyond. She has music releases on Lobster Theremin, UFO Inc., New York Haunted, Lost Soul Enterprises, Kraftjerkz, Dusk & Haze, Blankstairs, Serotonin, Oramics, Fifteen.PM, Cultivated Sound and Motor Records (Seattle), with forthcoming releases on Jacktone and New York Trax.
