Session Victim have become something of a phenomenon since their inception a little over 12 years ago. They bring a sense of fun and unrivalled energy to their live shows and DJ sets which instantly connects with any crowd in front of them and their charming disregard for musical boundaries ensures that you never know quite what to expect or where they’re heading next. When not feeding their addiction to pinball machines, the duo of Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling are constantly creating, keeping things fresh by forming labels such as Retreat run by Hauke and Quarion, Pen & Paper run by the duo themselves and Hauke’s new baby Save The Books. Last year’s Needledrop LP for Night Time Stories saw them step away from the dance floor and head into deep, downtempo mode to great effect, and now we’re proud to welcome Session Victim back to Delusions Of Grandeur for the release of Two Crowns which sees them edging back towards clubbier sounds, albeit with their trademark live instrumentation and highly musical approach.
The EP gives us three original tracks which move smoothly from the lowslung funky wobble of the title track with it’s stabbing analogue synths and house not house live drum groove, through to the lush, expansive sounds of Village Youth. Once again, Session Victim have created a collection of tracks which give us a sense of nostalgia for early 90’s Fila Brazilia/Solid Doctor records on the influential Porky label. A world where trippy spoken word samples, cut up breakbeats, deep pads and sine wave basslines live in perfect harmony and a sense of optimism flows through every note. Let’s face it, we can all do with some of that right now!

"Anyone that knows me, knows that my main passion is music. I spend all day listening to music at work and my vinyl collection of 16k pieces greets me when I get home. I knew about Ghostly International before they contacted me in the early 2000’s and we would write off and on. They used to send me big packages of white labeled vinyl, it was decadent.

Late 2007 I got a call from Ghostly asking if I was up for designing a new single for Dabrye. It was a dream come true and I feel like I found a friend who really understood me. I have had the distinct privilege to design over 100 covers for Ghostly, and that is only the half of it.

When they asked me to do a compilation, I was all about it. I wanted to do three or more compilations because I wanted to segment it up into different sections (Ghostly, SMM and Spectral). It is impossible to reduce the entire label to 15 tracks. Ghostly is dynamic, they don’t fit one sound, genre or idea.

So I approached it as a mixtape of sorts. I tried to find a common thread that spoke to me and create a mood around that idea. Some of my favorite tracks are not on here. JDSY 'Horizon Line' makes my head spin. Choir of Young Believers 'Paralyse' takes me to another place. There are so many more.

What you are hearing some songs that have spoken to me over the years in a distinct way. I don’t feel like they are obvious choices but they all are nothing short of amazing. I hope this compilation helps you see a different side of one of the best labels to ever do it." - Michael Cina

Mungolian Jetset - A City So Convenient

Enigmatic Berlin­based producer Algorythm provides the debut release on the new vinyl imprint Neptune Records.

Initiating the package, stuttering percussion and echoing effects form the deep and mesmerising ‘Santos Express’. Syncopated rhythms and thudding bass hits then make up ‘LFO’ as twinkling melodies work their magic, before ‘Bird Cage’ introduces soaring chords and tranquil notes. Tying things together, thudding kicks and snappy snares drive ‘Omar’s Deli’ forward as various layers of serene synths and pads are blended together.

“Earlier this year I had the great pleasure of releasing a debut album from a new artist called Meetsysteem. This is the remix EP of that album. A couple of years before that I found out Ricky (Meetsysteem) co-produced a couple of tracks I released, so I asked him for his own music. (Ricky is the kind of guy that just makes music on his own and will hardly ever talk about it unless you ask him). A year ago he finally sent me a couple of demos. There were a couple of house and minimal tracks and two pop tracks in the package. They were all great, but these two pop tracks really stood out. Turned out he had about 20 more of those weird poetic dutch pop songs. In the next 6 months we worked closely together to compile, edit, mix and master the tracks - to eventually release the album Geen Signaal last June. The album is completely different from anything we’ve released before. It’s been the most intense but also most rewarding record I’ve worked on so far. In contrast to the album, this remix EP was probably the easiest process for a release. All of it came together spontaneously. I’m super happy the originals inspired others to give their twist to it.”

Back around the turn of the millennium Tepat Huleux and Giac Di Falco, lured by dazzlingly eclectic sets by the likes of The Glimmers and 2manyDJs, would sneak out of their Lille homes, cross the Belgian border and dance all night at the legendary parties that birthed Eskimo Recordings. 20 years later the pair, now known as You Man, make their debut on the label with the stunning 4 track ‘Altered States’ EP.

Those early club experiences obviously made an impact as the pair have followed that open minded approach with their new EP embracing everything from dark disco to muscular EBM, euphoric trance to Konnakol, a percussive vocal effect used in Southern Indian Carnatic music, and even Di Falco’s background as a trained psychologist and hypnotherapist. The result a mesmerising experience primed to both open and expand minds on the dancefloor.

With releases on labels such as Tronik Youth’s NEIN, their stunning live shows and hypnotic visuals created by Huleux, the pair have firmly established themselves on the underground disco scene, their eclectic tastes and esoteric interests combining to create a distinctive sound that is sure to win over even more hearts and minds in 2020 with the release of the ‘Altered States’ EP.
