Final 15 - A Ghostly 15 Playlist Curated by Michael Cina

"Anyone that knows me, knows that my main passion is music. I spend all day listening to music at work and my vinyl collection of 16k pieces greets me when I get home. I knew about Ghostly International before they contacted me in the early 2000’s and we would write off and on. They used to send me big packages of white labeled vinyl, it was decadent.

Late 2007 I got a call from Ghostly asking if I was up for designing a new single for Dabrye. It was a dream come true and I feel like I found a friend who really understood me. I have had the distinct privilege to design over 100 covers for Ghostly, and that is only the half of it.

When they asked me to do a compilation, I was all about it. I wanted to do three or more compilations because I wanted to segment it up into different sections (Ghostly, SMM and Spectral). It is impossible to reduce the entire label to 15 tracks. Ghostly is dynamic, they don’t fit one sound, genre or idea.

So I approached it as a mixtape of sorts. I tried to find a common thread that spoke to me and create a mood around that idea. Some of my favorite tracks are not on here. JDSY 'Horizon Line' makes my head spin. Choir of Young Believers 'Paralyse' takes me to another place. There are so many more.

San Francisco three-piece live band PillowTalk, the guys who manipulate pop melodies, classic R&B, soul and boogie into the loose rhythms of house music have joined forces with Thugfucker on their latest album "Je Ne Sais Quoi". Home Sick is a poppy, warm groover that gets the blood flowing and your hips wiggling.

Optimo Trax is an offshoot label of Optimo Music for tracks aimed at DJs/dancefloors. Yes, we know there are too many record labels already, but we felt an overriding desire to start another one as so much music that didn't seem quite right for Optimo Music (i.e. music that was specifically designed for dancing) kept coming our way. Like the parent label, Optimo Trax will release music by new artists and excavate forgotten classics.

The next two Optimo Trax releases are from Milan. This first one is four HOT tracks from two self-effacing Milanese maestros. "Acido" is already shaping up to be a club classic and never fails to cause a commotion; it has been thoroughly road tested throughout summer 2013. The other tracks cover all idiosyncratic bases from high grade Sleaze Funk to Spaghetti Western-infused, low-slung house.

I remember starting in the game and not really having anyone who I could go to in the industry or who ran an independent label when we were trying to start Soulection. So when I see or hear about great collectives, I reach out to acknowledge and help because I didn't have that label head mentor 5 years ago!

Over the last 2-3 months you may have heard me name drop this really forward thinking collective/platform called @FlowFi who has some really great upcoming producers/artists such as Fortune. We've been in contact for some time now and even have a few artists such as @mistermack-1 & @fractions-1 (Chris McClenney + @rvdicalthekid)who are connected to both platforms (Flow-Fi & Soulection). 

I've really enjoyed the music that Fortune has been creating lately so I invited him over to play a set & talk about his story + role as a co-founder of Flow-Fi. This guy is only 19 so i'm sure the future is looking very promising as long as he stays consistent to the game. 

Big things ahead for us all.
