In the shimmering sunlight the city was a transparent lake, but as the sun crept down the city dissolved into a veiling grey horizon. I remember the faint remoteness as I stared out to my hometown of Los Angeles. I had recently moved back home and had expected for the rush of nostalgia to bloom into a previous self. However, there was instead a stillness that seemed to be waiting for something. The rolling hills before me arched up and down but only seemed to descend. The moments that followed dilated around me and I took solace in knowing that I was truly happy again.

This progression of music tries to embody the slowed and slurred first moments of my days rediscovering Los Angeles and the unintentional ebb and sway of finding myself again. A gradually looping state of lethargy breaks out into its own speed and dance.

Focusing on the interplay between sounds and culture she combines Iranian folk field recordings with raw distorted beats, hoping it will introduce listeners to new ways of perceiving music.Taking the old and making it new.As a DJ, she enjoys exploring music from around the world and showcasing the hidden gems from the past and present. Through her music and involvement in the scene, Maral seeks to both educate and have a positive impact on others."

statement about mix: The concept of this mix is centered around improvisation and the role it’s had in my music making. I was revisiting my first experimental live set that I performed with a friend in college around 2010 in the town of Blacksburg, Virginia, which I’ve shared the full recording in this mix. I’ve grown a lot since that recording but it was a really great moment of locking into a higher realm through improvisation and getting to share that with an audience. I think about that feeling a lot when making my music, and most of the tracks featured in this mix are from me improvising using samples from my Persian classical/traditional collection. I create a world for the samples to play together and become friends, that’s when I know the song is done. At the end of this mix, I included a section from one of my parents' tapes that I brought back from Iran, so the listener can hear an example of the source of my samples, before the samples step into my world.
