Kaitlyn's solo debut Euclid (primarily written on a Buchla Music Easel synthesizer) was inspired by her love of mbira music, early electronic music pioneers like Laurie Spiegel, Oskar Sala, and Terry Riley, and euclidean geometry. Each of the first six songs on Euclid were initially structured using euclidean geometry, an idea which Smith explored while attending a class at the San Francisco Conservatory. As Smith explains, "We each chose a 3D shape and assigned our own guidelines to the different components that make up the shape. For example each point of the shape represents a different time signature, each line between the points represents a pitch, each shape within the closed lines represents a scale, etc. And then you play the shape." Despite their heady geometric origins, the songs have a playfulness and warmth that makes them inviting and memorable. In addition to the buoyant grooves of Smith's synthesizers, some of the songs feature wordless vocals, which energize the otherworldly songs, while grounding them with Smith's earthly presence.

She slows things down for the second half of the record, which features a collection of twelve short pieces, Labyrinths I-XII. Originally composed as new soundtracks to old silent films she found online, Smith says the tranquil Labyrinth pieces are "intended to feel like one is walking through a holographic labyrinth and encountering different experiences such as hang gliding, viewing microbes under a microscope, ice fishing in Alaska, and watching glaciers collapse." Despite their brevity, most of these songs feel like mini odysseys, effortlessly casting a cinematic hue on the the listener's world.

Throughout Euclid Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith consistently delivers sonic puzzles draped in a warm Pacific mist. At times these songs feel so alive — like the musical analog to roots growing deeper and stronger, leaves on branches bending towards the light, or the sun peeking over the horizon, briefly igniting the air with a primordial swirl of warm and cool colors.

Weather Calculator was recorded at the composer’s home studios, and follows the Loose Canons and Opus I-IV suites with a diversity of immersive atmospheres, from the ominous minimalism of the lead-off single "Nimbus Villainy" to the drifting rejuvenating comfort of the exploratory three-part title suite.

The Tidings of Spring Begin with a Kiss from the Sun, part 2 (If Space was Time)

In 2011 Ancient River released an album of songs arranged in long player format that seemed to defy genre, but at the same time exhibited a tight and cohesive vision. The album we are referring is known as Ancient River’s O.D.D.S., and it was heavily circulated amongst the bands fan base. 

Now 2017 finds Ancient River hitting the ground running with the second installment in the ODDS collection with ODDS II. This album is much in the same spirit as the first one with eleven newly released sonic creations that collectively refuse to be constrained to any one specific genre or brand. 

From noisy dream pop, garage inspired all out rock and even minimalist atmospheric studio compositions, it’s all here on this long player of eleven songs clocking in around 42 minutes. 
Outtakes, demos, demons and singles seem to be the motto here and the album plays out as an unpredictable, yet proficiently executed ride through lo-fi and hi-fi musical excurtions. In a time when many bands cater to only one specific sound, this album easily sticks out amongst the vast space of contemporary music.

Life is short, but make sure to take the time to join Ancient River on this rare treat and you may walk away from the experience with a better perspective of the bands vision and perhaps a refreshed outlook on music in general. Don’t be denied.

Frank Zappa was a unique artist who combined many different elements from many different styles. He loved to take rhythms and melodies to another level.

The Black Page is one of the pieces where Frank used unusual rhythms to take a piece to a new level.

For the drums I used Session Drummer VSL, Garitan Jazz, and Big Band.  Yamaha M06 for the synths and glockenspiel. Nord Electro 4D for the marimba. Nord Piano 2 HA88 for the piano. Fender jazz bass, custom MarbleHead guitar, and flute. I'm also singing the trombone solo at the end.
