I was watching videos of the Pharoah Sanders concert a few days after the end of the recent We Out Here festival. He was evidently frail and unwell, perhaps even uncomfortable after not setting foot on stage for three years.  

However, even through a phone screen, you couldn't help but get goosebumps once he blew into the saxophone. His charizma, aura, and sheer emotion, as always, shining through. Sadly it was to be his last. The torchbearer of Coltrane's legacy and his one true heir, passed away just a few weeks later. 
  
Born Farrell Sanders in Little Rock, Arkansas, Pharoah picked up the saxophone in his teenage years. He briefly moved to the West Coast to study art, before going to New York to take part in an exciting new jazz scene led by his idol, and later mentor, John Coltrane. Alongside Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, and Albert Ayler, he would become one of the most sought-after saxophonists in what was dubbed - avant-garde jazz. Pharoah Sanders joined Coltrane in 1965 and spent the next two years as his protege. After Trane's passing, he continued to take his music to new dimensions, furthering his journey into African and Eastern philosophies and eventually, becoming the face and driving force of what is now known as - spiritual jazz. 

From Alice Coltrane to Floating Points, Pharoah would collaborate with numerous musicians over the decades. However, for this tribute, I decided to focus on strictly his solo output and showcase the mastery of the albums he recorded for Impulse!, Strata East, and Theresa from the late sixties to the early eighties.

I also hear new stuff that I hadn’t noticed before when I listen to his music - the track with Jack Wilson that opens the mix up is so heavy and cosmic for its time, and I’d forgotten about the track with Wayne Henderson! There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out... We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large… 

He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music...

  Gilles Peterson who will be spinning his signature set of latin infused acid jazz at iLL Communications. As a well recognized musical tastemaker, he spreads his influence on music listeners through WorldWide radio show celebrating 10 years on BBC Radio 1 now broadcasted in 15 countries from New Zealand, Croatia, Nigeria, USA to Cyprus. Gilles Peterson is a DJ, record collector and a three record label owner (Acid Jazz, Talkin’ Loud and Brownswood) from London, UK. Brought up among the South London suburban soul scene in the early eighties, Gilles would listen to Level 42, Earth Wind & Fire, Central Line and the heavier, deeper pirate stations such as Radio Invicta. This inspired him to set up his own station - an aerial suspended between a tree and a phone box - playing an eclectic mix of jazz, funk, reggae, soul and early electro. Over the years Gilles had collected so many records he had to move to a bigger house to fit all his records. He has come along way since then by being associated with the careers of countless well-known artists such as Erykah Badu, Tony Rich, Jamiroquai and from United Future Organization. 
  
  He has also hosted his Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards every year, the awards are an annual celebration of all the best new music that has come through every year on Gilles' Radio 1 show, with some of the best new acts performing on the night. He continues to be a breath of fresh air on the dance floors of the world and on this special night he will be playing unique selection of music that is rarely heard elsewhere.
