A decade in the making, Trevor discusses how 'FORMAT' came about, his graphic design career, growing up as the London club scene emerged, his role in Output, releasing early Four Tet and LCD Soundsystem, right through to talking about the state of club culture and his beloved London, today.

Ahead of their first live show at St Pancras Old Church on Friday,  here's a chat I had with the two boys from LV, Will and Simon, discussing their beginnings, their D&B period, linking up with Keysound and Hyperdub, working with Joshua Idehen, Omkalumkoolkat, and the new project featuring Armenian pianist, Tigran Hamasyan. 

Ancient Mechanisms’ is the fourth album by globetrotting London production duo LV. It traces a train of thought that was sparked by a live session with Tigran Hamasyan back in 2012: two and a half years down the line and a trip to Belgium later, the finished record is as much about the workings of musical artefacts as it is about putting the virtuoso pianist into new contexts.

Blue Note recording artist and jazz drummer Otis Brown iii swung by the Brownswood Basement back in May, and discussed his background including fellow New School graduates Bilal and Robert Glasper, and his links to legends like the most recorded drummer in history Bernard Purdie and Donald Byrd.

Plus, Otis discusses his favourite drummers of all time, and the process behind his debut album from 2014, 'The Thought of You'.

Residents' Hour: Danuka (So Flute)

I went to see Akua Naru in concert a couple of weeks ago and was blown away by her performance. I had to find out more so I invited her to Brownswood the next day for a chat. I was fascinated to learn out about her history, growing up in the States, but living in China and, more recently, Cologne. She was super eloquent on the subject of hip hop and music in general, and her responses to our current global political, racial and social situation were really on point. One to watch!

There are no liner notes, essays or books that could ever really put just how vast the influence of John Coltrane is. Maybe a multiple-tome encyclopedia. Maybe. 

These liner notes will be no such attempt towards that. However, with this brand new mix conceptualized by Colectivo Futuro’s Miguel Colmenares, and with John Coltrane’s birthday coming up (September 23rd. Day of an equinox), maybe we can process a few ideas as to why he has become such an icon for so many all over the globe.

DJ Resoul pays tribute to one of Berlin most important club-nights of the last 20 years: Jazzanova's residency night Kaleidoskop. For this mix he chose tunes that where played there and that era (around 2000). Resoul was a regular dancing guest and an occasional dj there.

The long-running party's roots reach back to 1999, with its beginnings at Berlin's famed WMF club. The multi-membered Jazzanova collective have helmed the nights, that attracted international guests such as Louie Vega, Gilles Peterson, Carl Craig, Maurice Fulton, Phil Asher, Dego, Questlove, Mr. Scruff and LTJ Bukem over the years.The club-nite showcased the sounds of hip-hop, house, disco, jazz and boogie that Jazzanova are renowned for championing in techno-friendly Berlin.
