played a handful of impromptu and playa-magical sets on axo at burning man this year, and every song on this mix brings up memories of dancing, smiling, and hugging with our axo fam, along with other friends old and new.
travel delays, extra a/v work getting the art car ready for prime time, and the crazy weather prevented me from doing much other than improvising sets full of party bangers, which seems to have resulted in some fun being had.   maybe this is a "had to be there" kinda set, maybe it's fun anywhere.  well, heeerrree we goooooo!

Canadian-based Heymac continues to demonstrate the serene beauty that can be found within the Drum and Bass genre. Following his release on the ProgRAM 100: Software compilation he has released numerous songs with his signature driving drums and ethereal soundscapes with labels like 170+ Recordings, Bay 6 Recordings and Headsbass as well as his own self-releases such as his song Hamartia. Heymac continues to show the importance of melody and appreciating the moment in his songs and performances. In 2022, Heymac braved the cold to do a one-of-a-kind DJ set on a dog sled with the Rocky Mountains as his backdrop, which firmly presented his approach to atmosphere and art within Drum and Bass. As a DJ, Heymac has supported artists like Bensley, Rene Lavice, Pola & Bryson, Spectrasoul and many more.

I intended this mix to bring the dark to light. Booked as the opening slot Friday morning around 6am amid dust storms, it felt appropriate that I start with darker techy shit, then move into hopeful grimy shit, then evolve into hip hop influenced tech house. This progression was effective and had the dance floor, full of people now grooving, whom weren't there when I started, jumping in sync against the weight of the pre-storm white-out.

This mix is special because as the inevitable fell upon us in the form of rain, and dust storms swept across Esplanade in fearful anticipation of the impending precipitation, I was lucky enough to choose and play songs perfectly appropriate songs, before we got drenched. Songs by Justin Martin which Encouraged our dance floor to remember that the "sun will rise again" and that some storms weren't meant to break you, no, they were "meant to build you!"

And as the dust cleared, the Bubbles and Bass dance floor filled itself with the courageous and those who braved the elements were rightly rewarded with champagne infused Bubbles. and Bass.

If you missed out, don't worry. It was better next year.

Liquid drum and bass became popular in the USA due to several factors. The underground rave and club scenes in major US cities like New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco provided a home for the genre. These scenes allowed artists to showcase their music and build a following. Liquid drum and bass combines elements from various genres, including jazz, funk, and hip-hop, appealing to a wide range of listeners in the USA. The innovation of liquid artists, who continually push the boundaries of the genre, keeps it fresh and exciting for fans.

Adam Hester is a resident for Upfront Range and hosts Konkrete Jungle Mile High alongside the original Konkrete Jungle New York resident Cassien, in the Lounge at the Black Box. It’s a night showcasing the best in proper jungle, from the classic anthems of the mid 90s on up to the new sounds of the 2020s. 
Adam has been DJing and collecting records since 1996 and specializes in music rooted in the Sound System cultures of Jamaica and the UK, spinning everything from reggae and dancehall to dubstep, Jungle, and Liquid.

General Midi, or Paul Crossman, who also performed under the name Fluid, came out of the Bristol club scene, making a splash when he became resident DJ at the Shimmy Club in 1994. His mix of breakbeat with nu-skool, electronica, house, and hip-hop made him a popular act.

Emerging from the backrooms of the Bristol Club scene his slick DJ ability and an ear for a great tune gave him regular appearances at breaks hotspots across the planet such as Fabric, Chew The Fat, Blow Pop, Sounds On Sundays (Sydney), Two Tribes (Australia), Zouk (Singapore), Budapest, all across the USA, Hungary, Spain, Serbia, China and Hong Kong. Teaming up with production partner Eelz, General Midi has been responsible for some of the most genre defining tunes in ‘The Westoner’ (’99) ‘Daft Funk’ (’01) ‘Further’ (’03) & ‘You will Be Under’ (’03), ‘Entertainer’ (’04), ‘Bass Rockerz’ (’04) & ‘House of Funk’ (’05).

General Midi’s singles have been released on some of the most respected breaks labels of the time, including TCR (Rennie Pilgrems label) & Kilowatt (Hyper’s label). In 1999 he released his single “The Westerner,” followed two years later by “Daft Funk,” the same year that his first full-length release, Genetically Modified. All of this has led to his debut artist album ‘Midi Style’ which was released on Distinct’ive Records in 2005. In 2009 he released his follow up album ‘Operation Overdrive’.

Paul Crossman also worked with writing partner and audio engineer Al Watson in the duo act called “Starecase”.

Currently Paul Crossman works as as a Teacher of Computing at Lampton School, London UK.
