Glances make music for the head and the body. Inspired by the UK’s rich lineage of sound system music and a shared love of off-kilter sound design, the pair have released music on taste-making labels such as Wisdom Teeth, Idle Hands, Fever AM and Scuffed Recordings, landing spins on BBC Radio 1, Rinse and NTS, and support from Pearson Sound, Batu and Surgeon.

We're extremely excited to have the duo contribute to the series, displaying a previously unrevealed part of their musical palette.

Through a series of mixtapes, Folli Projects will aim to explore the duality of creatives within the realm of DJing and provide a platform for artists to showcase a side of their music that wouldn’t typically be displayed within the context of a club set - lifting the veil.

OBR004 - Meku - 'Duck!dem' w/ Glances remix (PREVIEWS)

Sean Delahay is a seasoned Bristol selector. Spending his formative years in punk bands playing guitar and bass, his command of live instrumentation led him to developing a virtuoustic, highly melodic sound, earning him regular appearances at the esteemed Soul Shake and Percolate parties, and seeing him play at the likes of Love International festival. Now with a series of solid releases under of his belt, that have received playtime from the likes of Horse Meat Disco and Tensnake, and a packed out festival schedule, 2018 looks set to be Delahay’s most exciting year yet.

The mix opens with ascendant, space age pads that churn around dramatic string hits and spacey Rhodes licks. The mix’s tone becomes more playful, winding through a stretch of airy house cuts and breezy funk numbers with loose, live instrumentation, before tightening into a chugging groove that takes things into sleazier territory. Moving through a series of Italo cuts, with swaggering percussion and menacing basslines, the drums become continually tougher and the BPM increases. The percussion takes on an EBM inspired framework, supported by low slung guitars and writhing synth leads. Around the 50 minute mark Delahay lets the light back in, with swells of new wave keys and tongue in cheek 80s vocals, but maintains the lurching groove. The mix concludes with a gorgeous nu disco cut, with gossamer pads that shimmer atop bursts of steel drums and a hushed vocal line. This is an hour of road tested, party ready selections that will perfectly soundtrack those warm summer evenings - great stuff.

-- Was there a theme or underlying concept for the mix?

“I've always been into the slower side of dance music -  it was actually the crux of my transition into electronic music. I always loved the artists & producers that would push this slower, more progressive side of their productions, as well as the fast paced upbeat material.  For example Tiger and Woods and Francis Inferno Orchestra have always released and played slower tracks/sets which I've thoroughly enjoyed. I think another major influence has been Palms Trax, who has released some amazing mixes over the last few years, the main one to mention would be his 2018 essential mix that came out about 6 months back which heavily influenced my recent live selections.”

-- What is the ideal setting for listening to this mix?

“This is a chin scratcher for sure, and something that should be listened to at home in a chilled environment, it does get a little heavier and darker towards the end, but there are plenty of subtle changes and divisions in the tracks that warrant a more definite attention.”

-- Which DJ’s would you say have influenced you the most? 

“There is no doubt about it that my favourite right now if probably Gerd Janson:  his latest releases and sets have been some of the most sonically influential for me in the last 6 months. I've always been massively influenced by the Scandinavian sound so good old Todd & Lindstrom are strong inspirations for me.”

-- What’s next for Delahay?

“This summer has been great so far -  I've played a few festivals including A&B in the French Alps, and had some great releases out on Fate & Fiction recordings & New York based NYLO recordings. There are two more remixes forthcoming with NYLO which I'm excited to get out, and after that I’ll be settling into the studio for winter to start putting together a new selection of tracks. I’ll also be playing at Another World festival on the 4th of August which is just outside of Bristol so come and join me there if you can.”

Jynx are a hotly tipped London based duo: 2018 has seen them share the stage with DJ Stingray and Shanti Celeste at Farr Festival, and headline Rye Wax with their live show. Their productions are consistently forward thinking, distilling classic UK styles into a fresh product, with the result that they have received playtime from the likes of Ben UFO and featured on BBC Radio 1. 

Their entry to the series features new, unreleased material, and is informed by the UK’s love of low end pressure, slaloming through polyrhythmic grooves, tripped out minimal and high intensity breaks. The first fifteen minutes establish a stripped back, steppers groove. Tracks like Steevio’s “Syzygy” shine: the lurching kicks create ample amounts of tension, and the eerie modular synth wails trail into Joy Orbison and Ben Vince’s  “Transition 2”.  An inspired transition from a tribal drum workout sees the glistening pads of Lanark Artefax’s “Touch Absence” give way to a stretch of rolling minimal. The transition into Ploy’s peak time weapon “Ramos” around the half-way mark is particularly effective: the rolling snares fade into the mix like an oncoming storm cloud. The mix then moves  through a stretch of off kilter drum tracks: the urgent percussion of Yak’s “Zephyr” and Tessela’s “Glisten” are wonderfully counterbalanced by the swung, dubby hypnotism of likes of Peverelist’s remix of “Chord Recall”. Having spent the mix presenting sounds with an emphasis on futurism, the duo look backwards to close out proceedings. The nostalgia soaked, saccharine vocals DJ Sports retro leaning remix of  “Drive”  dapple the mix with splashes of sun, and the duo dig up an old D-Base cut “The Fight” to provide some much welcome late 90s 2-step darkness. The mix serves as a welcome snapshot of the genre-defying, trend resistant UK techno scene that has emerged from the post-Livity Sound landscape: its the sound of progress.

“Skeleton UK grooves that make up the club half of our sound. Couple of Jynx ideas and some matrix vibes thrown in for good measure.’’

-- Where/When is this mix suitable for listening to? 

“ Ideal for the M4, in the car to London, 2am saturday night.’’

-- Whats next for Jynx ?

“Getting our vision out to more and more people. Also, pushing the live show and some 3D projections we’ve got to go with it.”

Glances - We Need Something Innocuous [Scuffed Recordings]

Oli Samways is a Bristol via Brighton producer and DJ. In addition to holding down a monthly show on 1020 Radio, he co-runs the acclaimed Method Lab party, which is aimed at showcasing the heady broken-beat techno experiments that Bristol has become known for. The Method Lab crew have brought the likes of  Mor Elian, Re:ni, Laksa, Metrist and Akiko Haruna to the notorious Black Swan: daring selectors that have quickly established Method Lab one of the most sonically adventurous parties that the city has to offer.

Syz’s productions tap into a similar vein, marrying hazy synth lines with slippery dubwise percussion and plenty of sub pressure, displaying a sense of subtlety and restraint that belies his age. As a result, his most recent EP was chosen as the debut release for the stellar Only Ruins label, and earned him support from chief Bristolian tastemakers such as Hodge and Peverelist. 

For his entry to the series, Syz arms himself with plenty of his own unreleased material, as well as dubs from fellow bass-affected producers such as Yak, Henry Greenleaf and Mish. 

He keeps the BPM count low, increasing the tempo in a steady arc, with the result that the mix unfolds like a bold warm-up set.  He opts to fill out the skeletal grooves of dancehall-informed techno numbers  like M.E.S.H’s “Atemios” with rolling, spaced out downtempo cuts. Throughout the mix, the drums and low end remain consistently tough, allowing the elements occupying the higher frequency range to duck in and out seamlessly, and subtly dictate the energy of the mix. Syz executes this particularly effectively when he uses the glassy FM chimes of Call Super’s “All We Have is Glue” to transition from rugged UKG into a languid, after-hours strut.

Syz also shows that he’s unafraid to have fun with his selections, producing plenty of memorable moments. Hearing the unmistakable guitar lick of Outkast’s “Aquemini” emerging from a slo-mo tribal drum cut  is a much welcome curveball early. Likewise, Pangaea's remix of Patrick Conway’s “Orbit”, with its exuberant synth lead and lopsided drums, is a giddy rush of saccharine half way through proceedings.

This mix is a rare insight into the mind of one of Bristol’s most exciting young producers: don’t sleep on it.

Zoya Ahmed is a DJ and promoter based in  Leeds. She is a member of the Equaliser collective, who throw parties and offer DJ workshops to women, non binary, and trans folk on a monthly basis. She also co-hosts a monthly radio show on KMAH, "Bathtime Sessions", alongside fellow Equaliser member Luce. Over the course of two hours, the pair attempt to evoke the contemplative mental state often experienced during the calming isolation of a good soak.  Ranging from drowsy ambience and hip hop  to percussion experiments and more experimental fare, they create an immersive listening experience that’s serene and intense in equal measure.

Zoya’s  equally adept at holding things down in the club, and recently featured on the lineup for Boiler Room’s club tour alongside fellow Leeds resident Adam Pits. Her guest mix for Jossy Mitsu’s Rinse residency offers listeners a glimpse of Zoya at peak time, featuring dextrous rhythms alongside plenty of sub pressure.

Zoya’s entry to the series feels best suited to headphone listening, unfurling gently over the course of 1hr 25 mins.  Her approach to sequencing feels considered, but not contrived: despite running the gamut from chugging industrial to glimmering dub techno, via a passage of Bollywood, the diversity of styles never feels jarring, in part due to her penchant for subtle sounds. Even at its darkest moments, Zoya’s selections possess sense of sprightliness: though the basslines and drums can be smudged and sludgy, they feel hypnotic, rather than oppressive. 

Her ability to  approach is exemplified at the 25 min mark: by employing a gentle volume fade, she makes the peppy back beat of DMX Krew’s “Hip Hopeless” seem to dissolve into the buzzing bass drones of Nazar’s “Airstrike”. The track’s impact remains forceful, but it’s abrasiveness feels pared down, retaining the woozy feel of previous selections. Likewise, she moves confidently through genres and sound palettes whilst retaining a controlled sense of momentum: a particularly inspired transition around the hour mark sees her thread gated breaks between the downbeats of a loping tabla rhythm, without losing the sense of  groove. 

This mix is the mark a consummate digger sharing their collection in a manner that feels like an intimate living room listening session- don’t sleep on this.
