High Steppas [Club Sweat]

Digging for vinyl was fun, but digital digging has taken things to a new level. In the 90s, we would struggle to spend more than a few hours in a record store. Those hours now pass in the blink of an eye when you’re in a DSP rabbit hole! It was one of those never-ending stories that led us to Bridvog. In a past life, he recorded as Ambear, and we found his life-affirming synth anthem “Make Me Move” at the end of an ARTBAT playlist. From there, we discovered the Kraftwerk-inspired indie-dance of “R Life” on DiYnamic. Conveniently, he popped up in our inbox with an idea; needless to say, we were all over it. Recently, Kevin has been revisiting ideas from his Mylo and Linus Loves era, which chimed perfectly with Bridvog. Fast-forward a few weeks, and the pair deliver “Salty”, taking Alessia Labate’s ultra-hooky vocal on a turbocharged indie-tech ride through 106 bass and Nord stabs (IYKYK).

“Walk on By” was written by the legendary songwriting duo of Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick. Dionne’s 1964 version stands up as probably the best version to date, despite having some big hitters recording covers (Isaac Hayes, The Stranglers, Gloria Gaynor). We have a soft spot for the Gabrielle version in the GU office, but, really, Dionne nailed it. When it comes to samples, however, the Isaac Hayes version smashes Dionne out the park with over 100 artists sampling his version, although you could argue that Doja Cat’s 2023 lift of Dionne (“Paint The Town Red”) and its 1B+ streams trumps all of that. The point of all this? Well, nothing more than to show the song is an evergreen staple for artists and producers for the last 50 years. Adding to this now we have Italian producers Skylin3 and Simon Adams who put a deep house spin on the classic melody. Disco beats and a loopy bassline form the groove, add in some delicious chords and that iconic topline, and you have the kind of super-playable deep house that will entertain from poolside to the club. German deep house artist Eppers is far from prolific (you must head back to April '22 and his spell-binding collab with Kevin McKay and Notelle - On My Own) for his last outing on GU. He is, however, the kind of artist who, when he delivers the goods, really delivers. "In My Dreams" is another stand-out slow-burning jam with a wicked bass hook, clever chord play and a deliciously hypnotic vocal. It's giving us mid-90s Strictly Rhythm vibes with a touch of 2025 breakbeat energy. Perfect for summer DJ sets.

The Source feat. Candi Staton’s “You Got The Love” is one of the evergreen songs of club culture. Since DJ Erin put the a cappella from The Source & Candi Staton’s funk/disco version over Frankie Knuckles’ “Your Love” in 1989, the opening lines of the song have been like an all-powerful magnet to the dancefloor. Despite there being many versions, Kevin McKay couldn’t find one that fitted his sets for today and so made an edit, and then asked the wonderfully talented Elliotte Williams-N’Dure to vocal it for him. This slow-burning deep house rendition of the classic is the result and, for us, it’s on repeat. A beautiful banger!

Glasgow Underground was set up in 1997 by Kevin McKay. He began the label releasing his own music and collaborations with friends and other Glasgow-based artists (Omid 16b, Studio Blue, DJ Q, Harri). Through his DJing and work for various music magazines (Muzik, Jockey Slut, Mixmag Update) he met some of his favourite producers of the time (Romanthony, Mateo & Matos, Idjut Boys...) and convinced some of them to join him releasing on GU. In the early 2000s, Kevin met Mylo and set up the Breastfed record label. The global success of "Destroy Rock & Roll" meant Glasgow Underground was put on hold. After leaving the Breastfed label in 2011, Kevin re-started Glasgow Underground and since then the label has gone on to re-invigorate Romanthony's catalogue with remixes from the likes of Dixon, MCDE, Gerd, Andres, Oliver Dollar, Ejeca, Audiojack, Claptone, Christian Nielsen, Supernova, Jimmy Edgar and Waifs & Strays. The label has also introduced producers like Daniel Trim, Brett Gould, Mia Dora and Illyus & Barrientos as well has releasing established & rising stars such as Metodi Hristov, Stefano Ritteri and Sabb.
