A deluge of heavy-hitting support from some of the most legendary titans in dance music marks the return of award-winning Canadian producer Glenn Morrison to the dance floor. 

After a considerable hiatus away from the EDM limelight working as a songwriter and producer for Sony Records and Universal Music Group – in the process bagging Billboard #1 singles and multiple radio awards / certified multi-platinum sales – Morrison is back with brand new long-player ‘Into The Deep’, introduced earlier this week via two double A-side EPs. 

A pure passion project for Morrison, ‘Into The Deep’ is an exquisitely produced piece of work, a true journey of stereosonic discovery. Boasting a sound reminiscent of the critically-acclaimed ‘Northern Exposure’ compilations, Morrison brings an intelligent, thoughtful vibe back to dance music that many feel has been lacking in recent years. From dark, driving, progressive cuts to dreamy, trance-like singles; from throbbing, grinding, tribal tones through to hypnotic, undulating, bass-heavy pieces, this is a world class producer indulging himself and us in sound – doing what he loves and doing it very, very well. 

Standout tracks on the album that premiered earlier this week include ‘Hang Tough’ – where Morrison uses John Harris’ poem ‘The Gospel According to John’ to tell the sordid tale of a drugged out prostitute turning over a normal man to the same hollow lifestyle – and ‘Another Dimension’, a dark and intense build up of sounds swelling through cascading melodies into an eruption of syncopated synth and grand piano riffs that take the track’s sentiment in a completely unexpected direction. Titular track ‘Into The Deep’ lingers delicately on the palate, Morrison taking his time to draw the listener in and out of his creation almost as if we need his sounds to breathe. A little stronger and a little darker, ‘Bumblebee’s driving elements of techno and chugging minimal house underpin deceptively simplistic top layers making it perfect for those mid-set progressions in the early morning hours or, as Morrison suggests, “Space Ibiza terrace early night kind of vibe.”

“I needed to get back to writing these instrumental pieces where the riffs are the vocal lines, and the vibe is a sort of hypnotic mysticism mixed with late night mind bending chasers,’ Morrison continues. ‘‘Into the Deep’ is a celebration of forward thinking progressive house music; a dash of eccentric and brash synth melodies juxtaposed with bright, uppity grand piano chords and warped out arpeggiations that I hope will light up both dance floors and late night music sessions the world over.”

After having worked on many large commercial projects throughout 2015 with Sony Music and Universal Records, being nominated for several Juno Awards, winning the SOCAN Awards 2015 Dance Record of the Year, nominated for Sirius XM Radio Music Awards Dance Act of the Year, going Number 1 on the Billboards in 5 countries, and having a double platinum record of my own song ‘Goodbye’ feat. Islove, it was important for me to musically reach back to my underground house roots.  Getting lost in a sea of A&R’s and indecision-makers, and going through an entirely new process of commercial record writing - with session musicians, vocalists, lyricists etc. - it was the opposite world of writing that I made my records (and success) from many years ago.  I needed to take a break and get back to writing these instrumental pieces where the riffs ARE the vocal lines, and the vibe was a sort of hypnotic mysticism mixed with late night mind bending chasers. ‘Into The Deep’ is a celebration of forward thinking progressive house music - a dash of eccentric and brash synth melodies juxtaposed with bright uppity grand piano chords and warped out arpeggiations.  This is a cohesive body of music here and I wrote this all from around August of 2015 until October (around 3 months).  The first single EP from this album is called ‘Into The Deep’ and it has a very rich sound to it especially in the baseline.  I used a custom series 80 Neve console to get that wide character and the whole piece just really glued together with my mixing approach on this one.  I love the synths in the midsection and the texture to those sounds.  Perfect for late night dark room mash out venues.  On the B Side is ‘Bumblebee’ and that one is a Space Ibiza terrace early night kind of vibe - big room sound, tight percussion and groove, and huge analog synth swells.  I hope you enjoyed this EP as much as I did writing it and if you can give your feedback that helps me very much!

It was in 2014 when a mutual friend introduced me to Victor Ruiz while he was staying here in Berlin. I invited Victor to my studio where we had a fantastic session, playing our music to each other, listening to stuff we like and simply talkin and connecting. Since then, we became close friends as well as starting to work together. Victor has released two outstanding EPs on Electric Ballroom by now. This summer we met again and recorded three tracks. Welcome to Sampler EP 2 from my forthcoming ‘Into The Deep’ artist album.  It’s hard for me to select “the best 4 tracks” and turn them into the single EP rollout but in terms of club appeal and that overall feel I was trying to accomplish from the whole work itself, these two tracks are indicative of that.  ‘Another Dimension’ has a very dark and intense build which cascades into a waterfall of melody by the midsection and those grand piano riffs take it to another, well… dimension.  Hands in the air big open air festivals is the name of this record and I am excited to see the translation of this at venues and the cool clubs out there.  ‘Hang Tough’ is truly a techno rave anthem with a bit of nostalgia thrown in for good measure.  John Harris’ poem ‘The Gospel According To John’ is a wild and sexual tale of a drugged out prostitute who winds up turning over a normal guy to the same hallowed out lifestyle she ran.  Twisted and aggressive with the drums and minimalistic and haunting with the synth stabs, this will be a staple in many late night techno sets over the coming months.  Mostly, thank you all for the support it means a lot to me and I hope these tracks suit your DJ sets nicely over the coming months !!

Glenn Morrison - Musical Blinders

2015 saw Stephan Bodzin release his second full length, “Powers of Ten”, as well as a new single on DJ Tennis’ and Tale of Us’ taste making label Life and Death. This mix is quite the journey as it covers a wide-range of genres and moments in time. Enjoy the ride!

"The weekly MBTS (Most Below The Surface) events in NYC have been going strong since their beginning, last October 2015. I play from the start (10:30ish) until the end. I am the opener, the headliner, and the closer. Basically I play the way I played before DJ culture started, when DJing was thought of in 'shifts', rather than in 'sets'. I love this old fashioned approach because it enables me to play music that doesn't always fit in a headliner DJ set. More importantly, I try to keep MBTS genre-free, so if I want to suddenly drop from 122BPM into a 98BPM monster, then nobody will frown at me when I do so. At least not at MBTS. This mix is a collection of some of my favorite openers and closers. Finally seeing the light of day is Sasha's take on Hot Chip’s “Flutes".  Having been a firm favourite and closing track of many of his recent sets, he twists it in to his classic melodic vibe that only he does so well, taking the original into a new dimension for the clubs and festivals.

Beautiful synth work builds and breaks throughout the track, with tight drum programming keeping the track flowing and taking you on a melodic journey, as only Sasha can do.

Multi-platinum record selling musician and record producer, Glenn Morrison is the archetype of the modern DJ/producer star. The 37-year-old Toronto native is as happy rocking an underground house party as he is performing at an exclusive oceanic rooftop venue; as adept at composing an international club anthem like ‘Contact’ as he is at concocting a pop dance record that strikes to the Billboard Charts in America.  His single ‘Goodbye’ has been Certified Double Platinum and went Number 1 for 11 weeks in a row on the Canadian Billboard Chart, as well as going Number 1 in Russia’s Billboard Chart.  It wound up taking over Eastern Europe and became Number 1 in 7 Countries to date.

He is signed to Sony Records, Universal Music Group and Sony Music ATV as a writer, producer, & recording artist. He has been nominated for several Juno Awards in 2015, as well as Fans Choice Award / Dance Artist of the Year / Dance Record of the Year for Sirius XM Radio Music Awards, and won the SOCAN Dance Record of the Year 2015. 

Glenn has enjoyed the support of DJs as varied as John Digweed and Pete Tong to Dixon and Solomun. For three years he was resident at Ibiza’s Amnesia Club, and was a resident at Space in Ibiza for 1 year, as well as Space in Miami for 2 years.  Last year, Glenn added the latest addition to his residency repertoire in his monthly night being held in Las Vegas at the acclaimed Moon Nightclub at the Palms Casino.  And he is perfecting a sinuous, hooky sound that combines the eerie beauty of pure techno with light rains of melody and flashes of emotion.

In short, Glenn Morrison is one of the most dynamic and accomplished talents in electronic music today. Period.

Morrison is a difficult DJ to pigeonhole and that’s what makes him such a fascinating talent. One minute his sound is ruthlessly minimal and funky; the next it’s washed in color and vocals and emotion.

Glenn has had an unusual career path. He started off as a classical pianist, a preteen prodigy, performing  – and winning – competitions. Then came a life-changing encounter with electronic music.

Production continues apace in the new mastering studio Morrison has built in Toronto, entitled Alpine Mastering (www.alpinemastering.com). Be it sound design for video game companies like Nintendo, EA Sports, Activision or Rockstar, or his own productions, he simply doesn’t stop making and playing music.  His latest partnership with IMAX has been a thrilling experience, pushing the boundaries of electronic music to that of sound-scoring live theatre visuals.  Glenn & IMAX unveiled this concept with a 3 part show series at the 2012 ComicCon event held at the Ruben H Fleet Science Centre in San Diego, and it was a huge success. “It’s been a liberating transition for me to make music for all different stylistic purposes, and I’m very grateful for having the ability to do what I love for a living” says Glenn.
