GLENN MORRISON - LIVE & MODULAR - DJ MIX - SEPT 2021 - PRESS RELEASE

It was in June 2016 and just over 5 years ago today that Glenn Morrison's majestic 'Goodbye' crashed into the Billboards at Number 1 for 11 weeks in a row.  One of the first Canadian electronic music acts ever to do so, and in the years ahead became a long running battle with bemused Top Of The Pops producers, who couldn't work out what to do with a classical pianist turned underground club wunderkind turned pop superstar, who largely performs behind a mixing desk, absorbed in the act of creation. In a sense, you could see their point.

For the rest of us, it was a good time.  Dance records were starting to make a mass impact on the mainstream.  Invention was in the air.  For Morrison, on the other hand, it was confusion.  Though the establishment classed him as a classical music composer and pianist, DJs would play his tunes and the radio would play his pop hits - this was a multilayered cake of an artist with deep roots in musical understanding and translation.

What Morrison has been doing over these years is quietly spearheading a movement away from the utilitarian musical philosophies that had come to dominate on the club fringe: the idea that to fill a dance floor for a few hours was enough.  As Glenn Morrison, he wanted to make music that you could listen to anywhere; he wanted to play live like a band plays live, to improvise and challenge what it means to be an electronic act on the touring landscape. That word improvise is the key.  To this day, Morrison still declines to describe himself as a 'dance' act.

'I don't differentiate between electronic music or any other kind' says Glenn, who, at the age of 35, is at the forefront of the global electronic music scene, with his classical ambient compositions, to his brooding techno modular iterations, to his meditative piano scores.

In other words, Glenn Morrison has helped to reclaim electronic music as an art form, one with a history stretching back more than 50 years.  Take 'Love You' and the recent single 'Just Over The Bridge', for instance, with their spiralling, chattering main theme and chaotic cross-rhythms - they have more in common with the work of avant grade orchestral composers such as Michael Nyman or Philip Glass. This is allied to a purity of sound most often associated with early electronic pioneers Kraftwerk.  The stuttering arpeggiated clashes of 'Modern Classical' or 'Controlled Randomization' bring to mind the vintage moves of Human League or Brian Eno.  These fragments give a pleasantly direct, post-acid, modern spin.  You can dance to it if you want.  You don't have to.

Glenn Morrison & Brian Cid have been longtime friends and partners in crime in various music projects.  Whether it’s writing platinum selling records for some of the biggest pop artists in the world to writing killer underground house records which find its way into the most rambunctious parties worldwide, it’s safe to say that they are natural borne musicians through and through.  The desire to create something from nothing is a true art in itself and with their many years of experience forms a dynamic and deadly duo that is a force to be reckoned with on the dance floor.

Innervisions is the A side and it typifies the floaty atmospheric nature of the release.  Crunchy industrial drums juxtapose a warm and rich baseline tone, and a very smooth entry into the breakdown leaves us with a half time broken beat melodic wash to spice up the midsection. ‘Nu’ is a much more mellow affair, with splashes of melody thrown over a pretty four chord arpeggiated main base.  It’s a very heady record and something perfectly suited to a late night  after-hours session or pre partying to the calm before the storm.

Partial Press Release: The 43rd release on microCastle welcomes Brian Cid back to the label for a brand new EP. The NYC based artist has enjoyed much success since his label debut in December of 2014. An EP on Hot Since 82's Knee Deep In Sound and a mini LP on Guy J's Lost & Found Records top his 2015 highlights, while 2016 holds even greater promise with a new project for Cityfox on the horizon. Over the last 12 months Brian's sound has taken on a life of its own, increasingly organic and deeply emotional, the US artist has further stretched his sonic boundaries, with luminaries such as Adriatique, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, Joris Voorn, Richie Hawtin and Thugfucker now play listing his music. His return to microCastle has been much anticipated and a quiet start to 2016 has only made his rapidly expanding fan base even hungrier for new material. Brian now presents his second EP for the Canadian imprint entitled 'Belles Du Shaman' alongside a remix from Eagles & Butterflies.

The release begins with the title track and finds Brian carving out one of his most distinctive grooves to date. Layered beats and mystical pads set the piece in motion before an underbelly of warm bass swells fully initiates the journey. Highlighted by soulful vocal stabs the first act strikes an emotive chord, foreshadowing a break of warm harmonies and cinematic tones, ultimately leading to a third act of timely drops and heart-warming rushes. It's one of Brian's most unique creations and not surprisingly it comes from a special place, as he describes "Belles Du Shaman is a musical story of pain & struggle as well as hope & light. The hard drums and synths set the tone for this deep, pulsating and melancholic EP, that drowns in a sea of sounds, touching every weak corner of my heart. When I wrote this track I had just visited the mountains of Utah, more than 10,000 feet up. In a night of music and stars I was moved by how powerful and meaningful a space in time can be. A land that provides us with water, food, shelter... it gives us life as well as meaning. Imagine losing this. How it can impact our life and culture as well as our history and being. The end result of all these feelings and realizations came out in this track."

Derrick May is one of our main headliners at Rejected's Amsterdam Dance Event 2012 night at Studio 80, 18th of october.
Since my early dj days, I consider Derrick May as a huge inspiration, and in particular this dj set. Broadcasted live in 1996 from the legendary Chemistry night at Escape, Amsterdam. It was recorded from midnight radio by my partner in crime Edwin Oosterwal who borrowed me the cassette tape which I never gave back to him, which reminds me I should do that sometime soon.

In this mix, Derrick May shows us that in 1996 dance wasn't pigeonholed to one style or sound. He mixes Moodymann's groovy deephouse with Jeff Mills and Surgeon's raw techno. He goes from Donna Summer's disco to Tyree Cooper's jacking electronic funk, from Masters of Work's new york house to Ian Pooley's epic chord techno. All of this is mixed in a fast and skillful pace, a style that so clearly carries Derrick's signature.

There's some truly magical moments in this mix, how he get's out of Surgeon's 'Syllable' into Global Communication's 'Sensorama' at 1:09 leaves me speechless..

Even though by now I know most of the record he plays here, there's still a few I've been looking since the very first time I heard this mix. Would be great to get the tracklist completed, any help is greatly appreciated!

Multi-platinum record selling musician and record producer, Glenn Morrison is the archetype of the modern DJ/producer star. The 37-year-old Toronto native is as happy rocking an underground house party as he is performing at an exclusive oceanic rooftop venue; as adept at composing an international club anthem like ‘Contact’ as he is at concocting a pop dance record that strikes to the Billboard Charts in America.  His single ‘Goodbye’ has been Certified Double Platinum and went Number 1 for 11 weeks in a row on the Canadian Billboard Chart, as well as going Number 1 in Russia’s Billboard Chart.  It wound up taking over Eastern Europe and became Number 1 in 7 Countries to date.

He is signed to Sony Records, Universal Music Group and Sony Music ATV as a writer, producer, & recording artist. He has been nominated for several Juno Awards in 2015, as well as Fans Choice Award / Dance Artist of the Year / Dance Record of the Year for Sirius XM Radio Music Awards, and won the SOCAN Dance Record of the Year 2015. 

Glenn has enjoyed the support of DJs as varied as John Digweed and Pete Tong to Dixon and Solomun. For three years he was resident at Ibiza’s Amnesia Club, and was a resident at Space in Ibiza for 1 year, as well as Space in Miami for 2 years.  Last year, Glenn added the latest addition to his residency repertoire in his monthly night being held in Las Vegas at the acclaimed Moon Nightclub at the Palms Casino.  And he is perfecting a sinuous, hooky sound that combines the eerie beauty of pure techno with light rains of melody and flashes of emotion.

In short, Glenn Morrison is one of the most dynamic and accomplished talents in electronic music today. Period.

Morrison is a difficult DJ to pigeonhole and that’s what makes him such a fascinating talent. One minute his sound is ruthlessly minimal and funky; the next it’s washed in color and vocals and emotion.

Glenn has had an unusual career path. He started off as a classical pianist, a preteen prodigy, performing  – and winning – competitions. Then came a life-changing encounter with electronic music.

Production continues apace in the new mastering studio Morrison has built in Toronto, entitled Alpine Mastering (www.alpinemastering.com). Be it sound design for video game companies like Nintendo, EA Sports, Activision or Rockstar, or his own productions, he simply doesn’t stop making and playing music.  His latest partnership with IMAX has been a thrilling experience, pushing the boundaries of electronic music to that of sound-scoring live theatre visuals.  Glenn & IMAX unveiled this concept with a 3 part show series at the 2012 ComicCon event held at the Ruben H Fleet Science Centre in San Diego, and it was a huge success. “It’s been a liberating transition for me to make music for all different stylistic purposes, and I’m very grateful for having the ability to do what I love for a living” says Glenn.
