Music has saved my life so many times it's hard to count at this point. It's pulled me from some dark places and inspired me to do things, both personally and professionally that I never thought I was capable of. It makes the best moments brighter and the lowest moments ones that you can process and grow from. I know all of these things to be true, and yet the surprising power of music is something that sneaks up on me every time. 

There's a moment while I was recording SunSets #2, just after I made a particularly nasty mess of a mix, that I had this moment of the purest joy I can remember in ages. I was playing exactly what I wanted to be playing and I was imagining people enjoying the moment with me and it just felt purer than I've felt in months, maybe years. I suppose it's easy to imagine that living in uncertain times would result in some special epiphanies and unexpected ideas, but I never imagined that DJing for essentially nobody would inspire me so much. I feel liberated in a way I never imagined I could be, and I feel like I did when launching the project in 2011 all over again.

This mix, these songs, and then my performance of it, flaws and all, feel like a step towards something more authentic and special than the way I used to make my seasonal mixes. The real improvisation that takes place and the special unexpected happy mistakes make this something much more special to me. I hope regardless of whether or not you were with me last week for the stream that you can hear some of that moment in this mix. I hope this mix, Aviva 2020, can lift you from wherever you are right now, to somewhere a bit more lifted and hopeful than before. Thank you for listening and spread love as always. ~ Josh

"The songwriting session that resulted in 'Guess I'm Jaded' was my last before quarantine," Goldroom says of the song. "Ironically we decided to write a song about being jaded with going out to parties, which has slowly given the song about six new layers of meaning over the intervening months. I can remember the looseness and fun of that session though. It feels both like yesterday and like 2 years ago, the five of us in a cramped room, singing about packed parties and wishing to get some time to spend alone with loved ones. The transition between Spring and Summer is usually a time filled with so much hope, and yet this year I find myself, unsurprisingly, stuck in a mire of sad music and foggy ambient evenings. I feel like I'm 15 again, actively searching out songs for heartbreak and longing and just bathing in them day after day. I'm not sure how much other people can relate, but I've found myself going through wild swings of emotion and outlook during the last few months. Sometimes almost euphoric about the possibilities ahead and other times pulled down so far into the realities of the moment that doing almost anything becomes paralyzing. One of the few constants has been preparing and then weirdly performing these mixes each month. It's a magic thing because when I'm done I always feel like the mixes sound both like my current state but also some level of escape that I'm unconsciously reaching for. I'm not entirely sure what I'm reaching for at the moment, but I can tell you that these songs made me feel things that I haven't felt in a while. I feel that longing again. I hope it's melancholy doesn't drag you down, but instead gives you a few drops of hope. Summer isn't here yet but it's coming...
