For us, Norm is the ultimate definition of a selector, and many in the community will agree. Needless to say, we were incredibly excited when he joined TNP as a resident. His new show “Faking Jazz Together” is an excellent addition to his other projects, which include(d) Memorabilia, Bayetë and Native Dance.

Norm’s ability to unearth the warmest, sweetest and deepest sounds is unprecedented. The first installment of his residency stole our hearts: a jaw dropping, incredible selection of lush music that we didn’t know we needed to hear. We recommend you to listen to this one eyes closed, shoes off, laying in the sun.

Spanning from major studios productions, One-Hit-Wonders and confidential amateur acts, these titles share a charming perspective of these codes while treasuring a genuine song writing. 

This is my fantasized outtake of what could have been a local fusion jazz program back then. It features biting AOR, hazy Chanson, fierce Boogie, Japanese Bossa impersonation and wistful Italian score.”

And now, a little bit of JAZ

John Zahl, also known as JAZ, is a DJ and record collector based in New York, USA, well-known for his eccentric edits and oddball mixes. We managed to connect with John after he'd arrived back in NYC after a few months spent travelling.

His mix, which was actually recorded nine years ago for Sanpo Disco on NTS Radio, features many of his all-time favourite records. He tells us these are songs that he still loves, and which remain in constant rotation. We'd like to mention a few of the tracks, starting with the lovely slo-mo/Italo disco record 'Non Ricordo, Ma Piangendo', B-side of a rare 7" by Giancarlo Aspromonte. Pit Troja's 'Der Voodoo Mann' from 1985 can only be described as German hip-hop over a Moroder-esque bass-line, wonderfully eccentric, as advertised! The late great Björn Holm's 'Tid At Stå Stilla' from his 1984 LP Bortom Gränsernas Hav, takes us into Swedish synth-pop territory. The mix features a few of JAZ's own edits, including 'Cloud Worship' which has to be one of our favourite edits of all time, just superb. This is an exceptionally well put-together mix, and despite the wide range of material, it flows perfectly and naturally, as a good eclectic mix should do.

A Little Bit Of JAZ

Hey y’all! We’re back! This one has been a long time coming. I’m extremely excited to present to you the latest Idle Cellars mix, made by Melbourne’s Jazz-Funk-Cosmic-Disco masters Mildlife! A bit of a hail-mary pass, it was a dream to ask these guys to give us a mix for the series and I’m so happy they said yes! Kev McDowell, who sings and plays synths, put the mix together on the heels of re-starting their excellent Very Fantastic Radio podcast (which you should go subscribe to immediately) and he’s handed in a stone-cold-killer of a mix, a 90-minute journey through more genres than you can count. Which is well-Balearic in our book! 

I have been a staunch advocate of this band since hearing their defining single “The Magnificent Moon” back in 2017. Their music has been a revelation to me and, after seeing them something like five times I can safely say they are one of the best live acts in the world at the moment. Do not sleep on them, and if you haven’t heard their albums Phase, Automatic or Chorus, get thee to a record shop, stat!

Floating in on the warm waves, Skopje based DJ Soul Case serves up a laid back blend perfect for slow afternoons and sun faded evenings. Known for his work behind Amok Radio, Oubli, and the YouTube channel 50eurogigs, Bojan brings his ear for overlooked gems into sharp focus here. The mix drifts through a wedge of new finds from a recent trip to Brazil, weaving in Hip Hop, R&B, Street Soul, and downtempo disco, stitched together in a relaxed manner.
