Supertask X Saint Sinner - Get To You

features 4 tracks, and sees Goose’s sound evolve from the showier, brash tones of alternative rock to a more understated, introspective body of work. Upon first listen, the new EP feels comparatively muted to its predecessor, with soundscapes that feature ethereally subtle atmospheric sounds coupled with dulcet guitar riffs. However, it quickly becomes apparent that this EP makes up for what it lacks in bold expression with contemplative precision. It takes its name directly from the Grecian province of the same name, which has since become a modern day synonym for a utopian vision of opulently untamed wilderness. Despite its namesake’s idyllic origins, the EP’s true origins lie closer to something like despair. Written from the perspective of one locked out from what he calls “paradise”, Goose examines the emotional toll of relationships that seem close, yet stay just out of the reach of true connection. “In one way or another, we have all been robbed of this bliss before,” he says. “It could be anything – from discovering that you could never be somebody’s special someone, to realising that life’s changes have set you adrift from someone who was once very important to you.” 

To underscore the EP’s verdant theme, the musician carefully threaded the sounds of the outdoors into his work, adding layers of ambient noises to create tracks that give listeners a glimpse of the lush landscape in his mind’s eye. Masterfully mixed and performed in some places by the EP’s co-producer, Prue Chew, the EP takes shape as a self-assured collection of songs by retaining Goose’s uniquely narrative approach to songwriting. “Each song begins with the same building block of a simple guitar line, and space is intentionally created to encourage audiences to almost lean in and listen closely, so to speak,” he explains. “However, as the song progresses, it is fleshed out with other instrumental layers, before we finally bring in a towering wave of rich sound, just like a storm and its clouds… but it always ends with fair weather,” Goose jokes. 

Despite its familiar undercurrents of melancholic nostalgia and sentimentality, Goose considers Arcadia to be more experimental than his last oeuvre, explaining that his usage of samples are an experience that is unique to this EP. “I usually only write parts played with real instruments for a more natural sound that I can properly recreate in live shows, but you just can’t beat the real (sound of nature),” he says. New methods notwithstanding, this EP stays true to Goose’s down-to-earth persona by echoing his practice of documenting his everyday experiences in song. Once again, he tells the story of old and new friends he has made in his journey as a musician by interweaving their talents and presence in two songs. The second track, ‘Arcadia’, features breezy ambient layers by recent acquaintance and Stopgap guitarist, Calvin Phua, while「死刑的照片」(‘A Picture of Death’) plays host to the incandescent vocals of Goose’s other friend, Tyan Quah. “Having my friends in each song adds a magical touch of flavour, just like the way they spice up my life,” Goose declares. 

The tracklist commences with「三桃」(‘Three Peaches’), which was released earlier in May 2019 as a single. It quickly garnered more than 17,000 streams in its first month with its bright, juicy tones and good-natured optimism, and has been featured on top local Mandarin radio stations like YES 93.3 and UFM100.3.
