Mix of the Week #418: Scott Proper - Nervous Energy

As far as discovery goes, outposts are as essential as the means employed to explore or the tools used to navigate. Regardless of the scope of the undertaking, be it the world, the universe or the bountiful musical landscape across which this series sails, those are necessary stops that allow everyone to gather supplies for a trip, replenish energies for an ordeal, make friends for a lifetime or renew hope for a  journey. Thus, ports, stowaways, space stations fulfill a similar role. More than simple storage facilities or stopovers, they are meeting places where precious things are shared, from experiences to knowledge, and so are dancefloors. Tikal Floresta Bar is a great example: a lively space at the heart of Belo Horizonte where we see rhythms from all over and people of all origins colliding to generate the type of energetic fields of joy and dance that feed the nightlife of these vibrantly creative cities habouring them. Rache, our guest for this episode, is responsible for it and, as this mix makes abundantly clear, his managerial talents go beyond the trivial chores that make any enterprise function, they also include fostering and maintaining the vibe that makes any such spaces truly special.

It is meant to be listened to at home or in peaceful surroundings, when you are feeling low or need to rest in order to relax and escape a bit from the present moment, imagining yourself walking along the seashore at sunset time.”

On this episode we’re heading to a musical epicentre, Detroit, Michigan — home of an inimitable musical legacy: Motown, The Belleville Three, Underground Resistance, J-Dilla, Sound Signature… just to scratch the surface. Our guide to the city and environs is Sam Hooker who has complied a mix of songs that capture the feeling at the end of a long Michigan winter, as the ice thaws, simultaneously melancholic and cautiously optimistic. The feeling of a city in the process of rebuilding itself. Sam runs the label Two Rooms which just reissued Fred Scott’s very scarce introspective 45, Journey Within, which we’ll hear on this episode. Sam spends a lot of time in People’s Records, a legendary downtown record shop, run by Brad Hales — presumably a lot of the music we’re hearing today came through there — electronic gospel, mournful soul ballads, downer folk, UFO psych — weird and wonderful private 45s.

Music runs through his veins, his DNA. It has accompanied him ever since.
It’s no coincidence, in fact, that as soon as he came of age he was entrusted with a prestigious residency: NEUHM parties in Napoli.
Thanks to his ideas about deejaying, his hunger and enthusiasm, he is entrusted, in 2018, with another important residency at Basic Club, Neapolitan temple of underground music.
Today, with perseverance and dedication, he is responsible, together with Gigi Testa, for the musical selection of Organica Records, a record store in the city center of Napoli where he spends entire days listening to any kind of music. Here is Davide: no frills, just music.
