Swedish tastemaker label House Music With Love kicks off 2023 with Brighter Days. It is a superb Winter Sampler which celebrates one month since the Winter Solstice, the darkest night of the year, and signifies the move towards spring and summer not too far away.

This fine compilation gathers five melodic and organic house tracks to get you warmed up and ready for the year ahead. Weekend Heroes from Israel, the duo behind Anjunabeats Top 1 selling track "Left to hide", kick off with the smooth electro inspired U Remind Me. Moroccan artist Touzani teams up with Sofiya Nzau - who is Kenya’s fastest rising vocalist of 2022 - for the brilliantly organic and moving Afro house gem Ouria Deka complete with Swahili vocals.

Tel Aviv’s triple tag team of Laroz from Diynamic and this label, plus Badani & Gidor, all come together for the organic house banger Gunie complete with hypnotic drums and mesmerising Afrikaans chants. Anjuna's talented Wassu brighten things up even more with the masterfully melodic Lissu, which the NYC artist says he's been rinsing on late-night dancefloors the past year. Last of all, Birch from the UK offer Play, a spine tingling cut with lush synths and dreamy pads.

An interesting process with this one, I started making multiple layers, sketched the layout and finished off the following day. Ableton, Roli Drum Studio, Arturia Pigments and SoniVox Orchestral for strings and piano. Again, the flexibility of Ableton is really helping my creative workflow.

Scalar

An atmospheric builder of a track, well, more of a soundscape than a traditional song.

Thunder at Dawn (Alarm Mix)

The briefest noodling transformed, with a switch in styles for good measure. Thanks to the love of my life for the inspiration (and the initial progression).

Twilight Thinking

Less a song, more of a mood piece, which hopefully conveys the power of the emotion. A lone piano builds to a sparkly crescendo. Art imitating life?

Beyond Love

The follow up to Thunder at Dawn, something with a little more energy to give a sense of urgency.

Storm Warning

Another mood piece, with contrasting progressions and building layers. More of a traditional song in its structure with a focus on melody.

Tides and Time

I have been creating music since my misspent youth. Every song has a story.

I started with sample based tracks via Dance eJay and Acid Music on my x486 PC, the output from which I would describe as interpretive.

My first writing from scratch started with the glorious Yamaha RM1x and subsequently the Yamaha RS7000. With limited responsibility and seemingly endless weekends, I found the creative spark.

I have diddled a bit with my Teenage Engineering OP-1, Novation Circuit and Korg Electribe 2 (see tracks for evidence), and I briefly touched the Native Instruments Maschine MK2 but I didn't have the PC power to run with that.

Once Akai announced the MPC Live, I was positively salivating and purchased on release.

It has always been about an all in one box solution for me, and now I am only limited by my own creativity and precious free time (thanks, kids).

I write things that I like to listen to, but commercial music this is not. I could see my music in a game, artsy video or fever dream.

At least, when it's all done, I can say that I made some nice noise, even if nobody else thinks so.
