A 60's vibe to start this week's list with Hayley Reinhart (shades of First Aid Kit in the vocals) and Mattiel, before an anthemic pop banger from Hunger. Tom Rogerson and Brian Eno then provide the bridge to a more uptempo, danceable section, which includes a remix of Amadou and Mariam (their new album sounds very good). It's followed by a great dancefloor track from The Brothers, before Stafrraeon Hakon closes things out in an ambient mood (another very good album which you can find here https://soundcloud.com/stafraennhakon/sets/stafraenn-hakon-hausi-2017). Pick of the week? Haley Reinhart is right up there, as is Stafrraeon Hakon, but I think it just goes to The Brothers.

Stafrænn Hákon´s 10th album is named "Hausi". We are very proud of this album and look forward to gently placing it in your kind ears. The album contains 9 tracks composed by the band members between August 2016 and March 2017.
 
The start of the album is attributable to 2016 when the band performed at “Vinnslan” in Tjarnarbíó and improvised 20 minutes of work based around the melodies played on the harp by Lárus Sigurðsson, one of the band's members. After a successful improvisation, it was decided to work further with the magical harp melodies and the songs began to pile up. The band settled at Sólheimar in Grímsnes for a weekend in August and recorded some songs that laid the foundation to this album. Recording
ended in March 2017.
 
Hausi is a definite change of direction for the band. The band has evolved considerably in recent years from being Ólafur Josephsson’s alter ego into a full four-piece band. Now, Stafrænn Hákon has finally formed a solid core and finds a certain balance that suits all members of the band. After the band’s last album, Eternal Horse, which consisted of vocal ballads, flowing pop-oriented songs and the occasional traditional, heavy tracks in between, a deeper, darker tone will be prevalent this time. The band’s distinctive sound can still be heard in this natural, instrumental form and the outcome will not disappoint. Lárus Sigurðsson's delicate touch of the harp is the source of the album and through it the foundation of the composition is clear.
 
It is evident that Hausi's sound is to some extent reminiscent of Stafrænn Hákon’s album Ventill / Poki from 2004; Here, however, the compositions are more mature and sophisticated. Árni Þór, bass player, picks up the baritone bass guitar on this album, creating a very tight, but also melodic tone. Melodic layers of cello and trombone are also heavily involved in the sound, thanks to Þórður Hermannsson and Þröstur 
Sigurðsson respectively. Hausi's texture is seductive, but the band maintains a heavy feel that will not disappoint a true rock hound. The dynamic sound and feel is therefore the main feature of this band's 10th album.
 
As before, Lárus Sigurdsson plays the harp and piano, Árni Þór Árnason takes care of bass and baritone guitars, Ólafur Josephsson handles guitar, programming and keyboards and Róbert Már Runólfsson strikes the drums. Þórður Hermannsson then decorates Hausi with his cello and Þröstur Sigurðsson blasts the trombone like a true soldier.
 
The album was recorded between August 2016 and March 2017, partly at Sólheimar in Grímsnes, a garage in Reykjavík and homes of band members.

18 years on from the release of the very first ‘Disco Spectrum’ LP, Joey Negro and Sean P revisit the project, selecting the finest cuts from this much-loved album series. Three volumes of Disco Spectrum were released on BBE between 1999 and 2002, heralding a disco revival that, almost two decades later, just keeps gaining momentum.

Known by a plethora of aliases including Jakatta and Akabu as well as Joey Negro, Isle of White native Dave Lee has been at the epicenter of UK dance music since the late 1980s. One of the first British producers to incorporate disco samples into dance music, he took his favourite genre all the way to the top of the charts in the early 90s when he masterminded Take That’s cover version of ‘Relight My Fire’ by Dan Hartman. Never an artist to rest on his laurels, Dave has remained at the top of his game ever since; producing chart hits and underground club tracks alike, touring the world with live disco act The Sunburst Band and running his own label Z Records.

The Best Of Disco Spectrum features a wide-ranging collection of floor-fillers including: Rare Pleasure – ‘Let Me Down Easy’ (infamously sampled by David Morales for 90s club smash ‘Needin U’), Ramona Brooks – ‘I Don’t Want You Back’ (revived by Patrick Forge and Sean P on pirate radio in the late 80s), Bunny Mack - 'Let Me Love You' (an early forerunner of today’s popular afro/house sound) and Syreeta - 'Can't Shake Your Love' (snappy, bass-led funk from the former Mrs Stevie Wonder, mixed by Larry Levan).

“Who would have expected the disco revival to be even stronger now than it was then, though looking down the track-listings of the 3 instalments of Disco Spectrum, most of the songs included on those compilations have since been remixed, sampled, bootlegged, covered, re-edited, re-compiled and re-issued - often on multiple occasions. Since disco supposedly “died”, dance music has taken many twists and turns through a myriad of styles, moods and tempos - but disco still remains the foundation and lynchpin.” – Dave Lee, 2017
