First off, there’s up and coming Austrian producer Demuja, who gives “Can You Feel The Love” a super deep and funky treatment, brimmed with disco percussion, lush pads and a tight drum pattern.

Nico Lahs also takes on “Can You Feel The Love”, building a classic sounding shuffling house beat around a cheeky string sample that really suits Max´ voice, and really shimmers in the breaks.

German combo Volksfreude remix Hard Ton’s “Tessio” with a full on dramatic house flavor, exploring Max’ vocal in full around a plethora of soft synth strings and vivid acid sequences.

Luv Shack's very own Jakobin & Domino turn “Happy House” into a dubby house shuffler, laden with moody, pitched down vocal snippets and a brooding synth theme that gradually builds up.

The final remix on the EP comes from Ali Renault, who has his go at “Yeah Yeah” ft. Moralez & Sames. The rendition hovers between bleary eyed early rave and full on dark room acid, yet its all that in a slo mo house corset that just fits perfectly.

Any historians keen on the subject of "French youth in the 1980s" are holding a treasure in their hands. As a true archaeologist of this decade dedicated to disposable culture, digger-in-chief Vidal Benjamin with his newest compilation, 'Pop Sympathie', offers them a unique journey in the heart of the cyclone of emotions that struck all teenagers during the first seven years of François Mitterrand's mandate. Fifteen musical nuggets, exhumed from the dungeons of history, each and every one of them teaching us about what really obsessed the youngsters at that exact moment, i.e. what happens when the city lights come on at dusk, when irrepressible urges that stir them to get lost even more appear until the end of the night.

The artists gathered here did not have the honour of breaking into the local charts, but they all individually reached for the sky. Each song of 'Pop Sympathie' tells more or less the same story: that of a girl who throws herself into the night like one immerses one's self into the void, who rushes into a one-night adventure to become a star. And too bad if in the early morning she finds herself back at square one. In all these miniature odysseys there is neon lights, lasers, smoke machines, broken glass on checkered tiles, strangers on leather benches, celebrities in the bathrooms, stolen kisses, alcohol, drugs and cigarettes, Polaroids, venetian blinds and radioactive tubes.

If the first opus of Vidal Benjamin, 'Disco Sympathie', focused on the funky mood of songs that could have been played at Le Palace, then 'Pop Sympathie' develops itself as the imaginary soundtrack of another nightclub, Les Bains-Douches, the capital’s epicenter of nocturnal drifts. So what do we listen to, blasé, at Bains-Douches? Mainly synthesizers. The child of punk and post punk, French New Wave celebrates the matrimony of machines and lolitas under the auspices of a retro trend that revisits the atomic age. Trying to surf on that wave and hit the charts, a bunch of producers (Stéphane Berlow, Laurent Stopnicki, Bernard "Black Devil" Fèvre, Johny Rech, Jean-Yves Joanny ...) will spot their talents amongst friends, in a travel agency or at the local bar. These virtual stars are called Cecilia, Laurent, Sonia, Janou, Fabienne, Anne, Arielle or Ronan, not even 20 years old, and often leaving just an overexposed photo and their first name on a single as the only memories of their swift passage in this particular musical story. It took all the love and sweet madness of Vidal Benjamin to bring them back in the light of day.

After two fantastic releases already, the third offering is a various artists compilation that shows off the label’s broad array of sounds from producers all over the world.

Up first is a rising star and Milan based selector, Tagliabue. He takes stylistic cues from the natural environment around him and breaks down genre boundaries. His ‘Canto Nativo’ is a brilliantly tropical bit of chugging disco with breezy pads but twisted bass.

Gimel connects ambient, psychedelic sounds with deep, melodic moods, he plays at renowned clubs such as Opium and runs the ‘Samsara’ events in Vilnius. Here he offers ‘Dobilelis’ a superbly transcendental cut that is littered with vocal chanting and rugged bass riffs that really cast a spell.

Raised in the heart of the Middle East, Rabih delivers ‘Bowing Pill’, a track moulded by rolling synths, heavy drums and a hypnotic flow that stimulates your body and brain.

Mexican Braulio Renteria draws on dark disco and is inspired by futuristic, deep and unique rhythms. He offers the vital ‘Venus’, a moody and heavyweight cut with punky attitude and cosmic keys making for a real trip.

Play Pal Music founder Teniente Castillo who has a rich history of releases on labels such as Ombra Intl, Relish and Nein amongst others, delivers ‘Personality Goes a Long Way’ . This is sci-fi, low slung machine music with retro flavours which has a compelling starkness in the hits and synths.

Last of all, Andreja Salpe and Filip Polski aka BarumBarum follow up on the success of their ‘Ritual’ EP released on the same label by closing out the fantastic compilation with the desert chants and rugged drum work of ‘Sensation.’

This is a widely infused collection of disco tracks that take you around the world with a real sense of style.

The Feeling

We were very surprised at Versatile when we received this file from Flocofloco2020@gmail.com. And we still have very little info on the track that was there. “On m’a dit…” by Floco Floco is a lofi afro-disco stomper hailing straight from the new ghettos created by confinement. Something had to give and we are glad that Floco Floco, whoever he is, has chosen us to ease his lock down mind:

“I’ve been told to stay at home, on WhatsApp all day long, working in the studio, reading books I haven’t read, I hope it won’t be too long, I don’t know if I can hold, smoking weed day & night, like never I have been before”

Not a message, just a statement (and a big phat groove).

Since releasing his debut album, Invocation, on BBE back in 2012 with Louie Vega acting as executive producer, Boddhi Satva has emerged from behind the console to become one of the most respected and recognisable producers on the planet. With a sonic palette that constantly gestures back to his native Africa and hints at a deep knowledge of folklore and spirituality, Boddhi’s mystical touch has found its way onto smash-hit pop and Zouk records, as well as the deepest of underground cuts.

Taking in over 30 musical highlights from his career so far, ‘18’ turns up hidden gems and reflects on classics, life-changing collaborations and solo successes. Satva’s creative expansion and personal journey are traced across this intricate, self-reflective collection. And the lessons learnt from this journey through music? “Success doesn’t actually change people, it magnifies their true self,” he says. “We should always be open to learning and avoid burning bridges over futile considerations.”

Speaking of learning, this album features many of the artists that waymarked Boddhi’s path over the years, from early mentors DJ Pippi, Osunlade and Alton Miller to songwriting inspirations such as Badi, Zaki Ibrahim, Maalem Hammam, Zano and Omar, to name but a few. Collaboration is a vital part of Boddhi’s creative process. As he puts it “these encounters are very, very organic and never forced. I’ve also seen some dream collaborations come to life for two simple reasons in my opinion: believing in those dreams working steadily and letting the Universe make them happen for me.”

Over the course of ‘18’, we can hear the growth and evolution of Satva’s ‘Ancestral Soul’. “Before being an actual sound,” Says Boddhi “it’s is a mind-set. I always approach my music with the intention of uplifting and healing as many souls I can. Now sound-wise I’ve always wanted my musical envelope to be open creatively but always keep its African-ness, no matter the diversity of the sound. It is important for me to add that though I’m musically very open, I believe that what gives Ancestral Soul its special energy is the fact that it’s anchored by strong roots.”

Adventures in Paradise are excited to introduce hot new talents to the Balearic scene Falle & Soma World. Otherwise known as Falle Noike, Josh Ludlow and Tom Green, they deliver a stunning debut with ‘Want This’.
Vocalist Falle is an accomplished singer/songwriter and musician who has played throughout West Africa and the UK and is currently getting significant airplay on BBC Radio 6 for a release he did with Ghost Culture.
The vinyl version comes with the original vocal recording and an instrumental on the A-side with an extended vocal cut on the flip. Remixes come courtesy of legend and consummate production ace Ray Mang, who manages to take the original and rework it into a dance-floor ready smasher.
