Back in the early 1990s, if you wanted to prolong a chemically-induced high, it was the custom among a certain class of clubber to rub some Tiger Balm on the temples, for an extra rush. Over the years, this practice has sadly fallen out of club fashion alongside Travel Fox, poppers and imbeciles dressing in day-glo colours. However, we are happy to report that Tigerbalm has returned, though this time in perfectly human form. We can also confidently state that listening to Tigerbalm, rather than rubbing her on your temples, will create an incredible natural high, thanks to her impeccable taste in music, her deck skills and not forgetting her always memorable method of dress.  Tigerbalm (Rose Robinson to her mum and dad) was born and raised in Herne Hill, in the badlands of south London and has been DJing professionally for ten years. She has a unique sound that gathers in African, Latin and various world influences and somehow makes them work in and alongside modern electronic music. “I’m passionate about sharing global music flavours,” she explains. “Musically, that can be anything from Italo-disco, French boogie, Afro-house, highlife, Brazilian funk or Asian-inspired edits. My favourite sounds are percussion heavy, heavily Afro-Latin, because the swing embodied in those sounds is what creates a happy dancefloor.”

Tigerbalm also makes music, too. In a previous incarnation, she was one half of Earthboogie, who were signed to the vaunted Leng label, releasing their debut LP, Human Call, in 2018, as well as a series of well-received EPs, including collaborations with Nina Miranda and Angelique Kidjo, which neatly demonstrate her love for the world musical diaspora. They were described as, “intergalactic, cosmic, tribal and terrestrial.” Hard to argue with that assessment.   Since the dissolution of Earthboogie, Robinson now uses the solo moniker of Tigerbalm. After her debut solo 12-inch, ‘Ello Koko’ on Leng caused enough of a stir for her to sign an album deal with Ubiquity, with the album – International Love Affair – due to drop late 2022, with a whole slew of killer remixes from the likes of Session Victim, Emperor Machine and Daniele Baldelli (a remix album is due out next year). The lead single, ‘Waiheke’ is due September, with remixes from Alma Negra and Demi Riquismo. She’s also been working upon a few remixes for other artists, including a sterling tribal space workout for William Orbit that has been beamed in straight from Planet Fun, a Cliff Colada remix on a forthcoming The Disco Express compilation and a brand new EP for Razor’N’Tape. Busy, busy.   As a DJ she is, indeed, a busy girl. Most weeks will find her either peaking scruffy basements full of dry ice and sweaty ravers or entertaining private members’ clubs with her extrovert sounds, gilded always with her unique world perspective. In an age of regressive politics and inward-looking neo-nationalism, there’s something gloriously open and outward-looking about the musical worldview of Rose Robinson. A keen traveller whose mindset and musical vision has been shaped by her experiences visiting different destinations around the globe, Robinson’s releases as Tigerbalm thrillingly combine her roots in dance music – Robinson has been DJing around her home city of London and much further afield for well over a decade – with rhythms, sounds and instrumentation inspired by all manner of indigenous musical cultures from around the world. This trademark sound is sonically kaleidoscopic, unflinchingly percussive and undeniably infectious, though attempts to accurately describe it are likely doomed to failure. While confounding those employed to review music not Robinson’s aim – she was much more interested in fusing her eclectic global musical influences and showcasing great female vocalists – her brilliant debut album, International Love Affair, will surprise as much as it delights – and all for the right reasons.
It arrives on the back of a string of celebrated singles and was created with the help of a large archive of recordings of jam sessions with musician friends, and contributions from a talented pool of female singers Robinson has met on her travels around the world. It’s those travels that shaped the sound of International Love Affair, with every track being a personal response to the musical cultures of places she’s visited. Combine these vivid experiences with nods to dancefloor-focused styles she loves – think organic house, nu-disco, Afro-house, dub disco, Afro-disco and Brazilian club cuts – and you have a debut solo album that’s as imaginative and entertaining as they come.
For proof, check the album’s two Bali-influenced tracks:  album opener ‘Kete’, where Joy Tyson’s stylish vocals ride a heady, low-slung midtempo groove wrapped in Indonesian instrumentation, and the extra-percussive, tech-house influenced dancefloor voodoo of ‘La Brisa’ (a cut named in honour of the Bali-based club of the same name). Or for that matter the two tracks inspired by Robinson’s experiences in Berlin, the Joy Tyson-voiced strut of ‘Tokyo Business’ – a dense, squelchy, dark-room ready blend of heavy grooves, punk-funk inspired vocals and ‘80s freestyle synth sounds – and the irresistible peak-time heaviness of ‘Cocktail D’Amore’, a track made in tribute to the legendary LGBTQIA+ party of the same name that sits somewhere between Afro-house, tribal house, dubbed-out late-night hedonism and the most mind-altering of organic percussion workouts. 
Robinson’s positive experiences on Waiheke Island in New Zealand, the location of the legendary Flamingo Pier festival, are explored on two tracks, too – superb recent single ‘Waiheke’ and the inspired ‘Cosmic Camel’ – an impeccable, breathlessly brilliant re-imagining of the mid-80s proto-house sound of Paul Simpson and Boyd Jarvis (amongst others) blessed with cut-up Maori vocal samples and the kind of hazy, dubbed-out horn licks that have long been a feature of records by New Zealand outfit Fat Freddy’s Drop. 
Such is the quality across the set, attempting to pick highlights is a futile gesture. Some may cite the breezy, Brazil-inspired samba-house/funky nu-disco of ‘Bahia Escapista’ (this features a very special ‘secret guest’ vocalist, whose identity will no doubt promote debate online), or Robinson’s response to visiting Morocco, ‘Riad De Lister’ – a squelchy chunk of 21st century P-funk that’s as heady and intoxicating as it is addictively dancefloor-focused. An instrumental version of that track is also featured on the album, alongside a handful of other vocal-free alternative takes. International Love Affair more than lives up to the promise of its title, marking out Robinson as one of electronic music’s most inventive and on-point global fusionists.

Of the two original songs that grace the A side, ‘Nina’ is a pulsing boogie affair with driving percussion, catchy chants, and punctuating sax. ‘Sisters’ shows a more Balearic side of tropical with African guitar work and lilting soulful vocals. The B-side sees two distinct remix takes on the title track, the first by RNT regular Elado who bumps up the tempo for a stomping acidic club mix, and Voilaaa who transforms the song into a driving and authentic classic Zouk arrangement.

Mexican singer/percussionist/producer/DJ sensation Pahua comes to Razor-N-Tape via a huge 12” + 7” remix project featuring some of the hottest producer names in current outer-national dance music.  

Originally the singer of beloved Mexican band Sotomayor, Pahua blazed her own solo path in 2020, developing her unique electronic Latin sound through a series of EPs, culminating in the release of her standout Habita LP on Nacional Records in 2023. Garnering millions of streams, Habita established Pahua as an essential voice of modern alternative folk/pop in Latin America, and now Razor-N-Tape brings her sound to the dance floors of the world with a varied remix package that honors the essence of the original music, while flipping it in quintessential RNT club-ready fashion.

The list of remixers on this project includes both staples and new recruits to the RNT production stable. Label co-head JKriv turns in a late-nite bass mix of the exceedingly popular ‘Porque Yo,’ Tigerbalm brings her chugging international disco flair to ‘Pa’lante,’ Prince of Queens digs deep with a housey dub of ‘Calla,’ and Londoner Clive From Accounts takes ‘Caña Brava’ into moody nu-disco meets amapiano territory. The label newcomers also deliver in a huge way, with LA-based Captain Planet and Quebecois producer Poirier each revealing very different but equally banging sides of the uptempo ‘Espantapájaros,’ respectively percussive and thumping, and stripped down and hypnotic. Detroit Latin production legend John Beltran adorns the melancholic ‘Flor de Jazmin’ with a samba-inflected rhythmic foundation and a lush horn arrangement that transports you straight to Cafe del Mar, Ibiza. And Mexican producer Belmar rounds out the package with a slow rolling and deep mix of ‘Porque Yo.’

With a collection of remixes as prolific and solid as these, RNT opted for an expansive 12” + 7” package that features seven of the remixes across the two slabs of vinyl. The gorgeous cover artwork flips the moonrise eclipse motif of the original Habit album cover perfectly, with a slick device that reveals a crescent moon as the record is removed from the jacket.
