Newlands is the suburb in Cape Town where I grew up. I believe there is another one closer to Johannesburg. What is the connection with Newlands? What is Mgido? Words aside, the sounds are outstanding.

Omagoqa - a trio creating new wave gqom with the artistic intention to always let the masses feel the indigenous authenticity of sound. Their music showcases a version of gqom coined as ‘uThayela’, which translates literally as “corrugated iron” and is used to describe “a rougher sound with a harder bassline that it is made for clubs”. It's a proud testament to a love of South African creativity and music. The group is made up of Andile Mazibuko (stage name Ma_A), Franco Makhathini (stage name KB) and Njabulo Sibiya (stage name Chase). 

The trio has been together for over 7 years and are a collaborative team that have worked alongside the likes of DJ Lag, Que DJ , Zvri, Jimbo Soundz, Cultivated Soulz, Scelo Gowane, Madanon & Newlandz. Omagoqa plays a raw sound, it can be aggressive and dark, but there isn’t a moment when the crowd isn’t giving it all back. They pull elements from EDM , Electronic & Dance/House to bring their unique music to life.

Omagoqa is cementing their name in the music industry, they’ve performed at events like Ballantines Boiler Room and their sound and energy already has a solid reputation in the South African music and nightlife scenes. It's difficult not to have a good time at their performances, if you didn’t come to dance, the night isn’t going to go to plan. The collective's ambition is international and they’re planning on pushing that agenda aggressively with the soon to be released EP - Feel The Bass.

A team effort inspired by the old school barcardi vibe as well as the Rough Amapiano sound previously championed by Toxicated Keys and GemValleyMusiQ on the PSSNGR label this year. King Mzaiza is one of the major figures of the South African SKHOTHANE culture. Skhothane means « bragging » in zulu and Skhothanes are young men and women from the townships who love to wear Italian high end fashion and Italian cycling apparel, and have their own lifestyle, with their own parties, restaurants and shops. Dance and music are also crucial components of this subculture, that has been known in SA since more than twenty years now.
PSSNGR is proud to release a single by Mzaiza feat. Fafastra & U-Girl : "Isikhalo Sikalova". The sound of skhothane music is called Umbhoqo and is based on syncopated beats and uplifiting chants, both male and female. sometimes close to early dancehall vocals.

"Isikhalo Sikalova" tells the story  of vocalist and artist Fafastra who was incarcerated for a crime he did not commit and was eventually found innocent. It also deals with how people in SA belittle the Skhothane culture, and think Skhothanes are people with no future. Fafastra is then pleading with God to answer his prayers and make his dreams become reality. "Isikhalo Sikalova" means: "the lament  of the guy" or "the crying man".

More skhothane action coming up on PSSNGR with another amazing single ("Sithi Sithi") and a full album named  "Umbhoqo Manifesto".

Premiere: Citizen Boy - Tribute to DSB

Head of the Gqom Oh! label, Nan Kolè has been undertaking a massive project over the past few months. Allying with Rome-based radio station Crudo Volta, Kolè has been travelling around South Africa, and Durban in particular, to investigate the various shades of Gqom that are gradually emerging. For many of these artists, the resultant Woza mixtape and the accompanying documentary are their first chance at exposure outside of the country. It's also an opportunity to contextualise Gqom and educate the rest of the world about the culture as a whole. Crafting a balance of the biggest hitters in the scene, the biggest tracks and those most representative of the sound and its scene must have been a difficult tightrope to walk. One of our favourites—and it really was tough to pick just one—was "Cruel Drumz", a dubby example of the gritty, minimal, bass-heavy sound of Gqom by Cruel Boyz (whose "Touch It" we premiered last year).

Here at Gqom Oh! we are proud to present our first ever solo artist EP and it comes in the form of Dominowe a 19 year old producer from the Newlands east township of Durban, South Africa who started out making music just for his friends. This release snapshots important themes in his evocative personal journey - expressed in his own very unique style!

Releasing on Vinyl in 27th of January 2017, the EP, titled
“SiyaThakatha”, showcases Dominowe's original style in the context of the Durban electronic music scene especially when paced beside Gqom and Sghubu. The listener gets a real sense of his complexity and the variety of styles Dominowe is capable of producing. "SiyaThakatha", the EP name, is translated black magic, or, we witching - which is right at the heart of this release: that listening to these sounds invite you into the universe of an unseen world, putting you in touch with what can only described as invisible energy - a combination of the ideal, the intangible, the unattainable and the other-worldly whilst on journey with a 19year old from Durban whose music is composed of influence and innovation. It is about gqom working its magic on the dance floor for people to move - to the distinctive beats and cultural rhythms.
