A progressive electronic duo, formed in 2016 by seasoned beatsmith Tsuruda (Darker Than Wax, Team Supreme, Division) and experimental artist Huxley Anne (Dome of Doom/Alphapup), PAINT incorporates all aspects of both member’s creativity. The duo was inspired as the two were coming up in the LA beat scene, often adding visual elements to their live performances while writing genre-defying songs in the studio. Their style draws largely on abstract hip-hop, jazz, bass, and grime influences, but unites these elements into seamlessly painted soundscapes that stand out in the modern sea of electronic music. Their powerful rhythms, colored nuances, and expressive lead synth tones ignite in the PAINT live show, where you can often find the duo mashing custom visuals together while spinning tracks back to back.

“After years of writing together under our solo aliases, this EP has solidified a creative purpose—unifying musical production with a visual aesthetic to elevate electronic music into the realm of art. It also serves a social purpose, placing a man and a woman on equal footing within a technical environment where women are scarcely represented. Fighting against both genre and gender constructs drives our forward-thinking energy inside the musical structure.

When 20/20 LDN approached us about writing an EP, we were ecstatic. They’ve created a platform we value for both the visual aesthetic and their fearlessness in bridging genres within electronic music. For us, working with Ivy Lab on this release is directly in line with our goals of defying genre constructs in order to create art that lives beyond contemporary confines.

This EP is an intellectual apex for us, seeking to defy genres from within their technical and stylistic constructs. By combining sound design techniques from European bass music with the rebellious energy of the LA beat scene, we’ve entered a musical landscape that is not yet defined. The EP’s title, Exodus, represents our departure from genre-based music, opening up a new environment where sound design, aesthetic, synthesis, and culture have become modular tools for exploring the future of electronic production."

Having thus far mainly featured as a guest on music released by long time supporters Ivy Lab, the Chamber E.P marks the first solo excursion for 28 year old Nick Jackson a.k.a Havelock; arriving via the same 20/20 LDN imprint that housed all of his collaborative work. 

Featuring a span of BPM’s and aesthetics ranging from knocking 808’s to papal-inspired Jungle; the project makes for a relentlessly bleak and unsettling listen - featuring guest appearances from 20/20 mainstay Deft on the track “Chimes”, and Bristol-based instrumental grime producer Hi5Ghost with his remix of “Graphics”.

Born and bred in London, Havelock has been quietly honing his production for almost a decade, branching out from his initial explorations in minimal drum and bass into territory closer in complexion to noise-scene abstractions and alt-hip hop.  

Having cut his teeth DJing in clubs and bars during his stints in Amsterdam and Leeds, he went on to found the Buried Audio record label, responsible for releasing music from acts who would go on to become celebrated actors in the bass music landscape. Sitting in the same lane as a small cohort of pioneering outfits such as Darkestral & Exit Records, Buried audio went onto release some of the earliest works from artists such as June Miller (Ram Records) & Nick Modern (Metalheadz/Tempa) 

It was only after wrapping up Buried Audio and returning to London that the Havelock alias was born; his focus turned to producing music that encapsulated an increasingly far-reaching taste in obscure underground electronica. Drawing on influences from ambient, metal and abstract hip hop, his sound is loosely engineered by design and paints bleak landscapes with a tangible rawness and innocence.

"Shielding my eyes against the harsh grey light reflected off the dust, I look out across the ruined structures, sticking out like the broken posts of a fence that is being reclaimed by sand dunes. I struggle to think back to a time before this. What was it like, truly?

Fleeting examples spring to mind: Certain insect species such as ants have not been seen for decades. There is now a constant worry about when the food or water may run out, but we have our ways. Or when the brothers and sisters from The Awakened might intercept a transmission, and finally hunt us down, which is inevitable. Life without those worries, well… there is no point in daydreaming…

The old dystopia, while very different, was also exactly the same. People carried along in a flow, distracted from everything that matters by everything that does not. Unwittingly dictated to from above, while being fed the lie of self awareness and freedom of expression. Mice in a wheel, constantly going round and round and round, but never going anywhere.

It is the same now, being fed the lie that there is no hope except for that shimmering beacon: The Awakened. Providing sanctuary, food and shelter, but at the price of unquestioning obedience and the effective servitude of continuous labour."

"Maybe it was just an accident, the unfortunate consequence of experiments conducted in secret underground labs. Who can guess what alchemy was being concocted in those subterranean depths. Perhaps it was planned in order to sow chaos and bring about a new hierarchy. But in truth, there are no records, no point of reference, so like a person spiralling in interstellar space, we have no way of knowing which is up or down.

What we do know is that it brought an end to our old dystopian society, but the cruel phoenix of power inevitably rose from the dust, rubble and ash. A new power, calling themselves The Awakened, they were the self-appointed messiah, a final hope for our species.

The New Dystopia had emerged.

To begin with, we were all fighting a war against the common enemy: starvation, lack of shelter, clothing, warmth. According to The Awakened that is all we can ever afford to focus on. No place for compassion, love, creativity, no place for humanity, just a minimum level of survival.

Now the war is against us, the population: power is their ultimate goal. Keeping this deformed and mutated structure of society intact has become the means to retain that power."

Deep, tribal music is that which carries the present minded listener to the doorstep of infinity.

The second edition of The Space Between downtempo yoga mix series welcomes Mose (@mosemusica).

Founder of @ResuenoMusic, medicine musician, producer, and auditory healer, Mose spends much of his time in Guatemala where cacao ceremonies, Kirtan and ecstatic dance have had a major influence on his productions and DJ style.

It is there on Lake Atitlan that he founded the weekly SunSet Cacao Dances where members of the community have the opportunity to journey deep into dance in a container of deep intention and free of alcohol and other substances.

Having been nomadic since 2011, he has developed a sound all his own through interaction with cultures from around the world. He finds a way to fuse the organic elements of tribal traditions with modern production techniques in order to create an entrancing journey for both relaxed listeners and those eager to move their bodies.
