There was a time when I recorded lots of snow sound effects. The Ultimate Snow collections contain TONS of snow sounds recorded when I did not mind getting cold and wet running around with my microphone during some of the coldest winters I've ever experienced. Since then I've realized I'm getting to old for the cold... just a little. I still venture out into the crystal clear, frigid cold days here in Idaho and record snow and ice sounds every now and then. The result of these random recording sessions since the other snow collections were produced is SNOWMAN HD PRO.

Snowman HD Professional contains all new snow material recorded over the last few years. The Snow man was with me, he's a really cool little guy and he sat on my should while I recorded some unique snow textures. Yes, it's my delusion. During these sessions I dumped large chucks of snow on the ground with my tractor, watched in fear as the snow slid off my metal roof and slammed giant snowballs on metal objects. I even tossed freezing cold icy snow debris onto vegetation and trees.

Soft and subtle sounds are also included such as powder impacts, slides, crystallized debris sprays, gentle rubs and light debris drops. I hit, kicked and used a pick ax on some tracks that will come in handy for that monster mountain climbing fist fight. Various object slides to simulate tires and bodies on snow are in here. There are also long tracks of snow falling from trees during a moderate wind event.

Designing sound for a avalanche scene can be challenging and this collection can really help. These sounds play perfectly at a very low pitch. One or Two octaves down produces stunning results because the material recorded with extended frequency response microphones. So, jump in, grab the SNOWMAN and don't let him melt away!

In August 2013 I had the opportunity to record a rare diesel powered train from the 1950’s. This was a long time coming but it finally happened thanks to a few friends and the really cool guys who were tasked with making the machine operational. Here is the back story. In 2011 during the recording of North Country Trains sound effects library I stumbled upon the old locomotive parked along the switching tracks in Ponderay Idaho. It look as though it was being refurbished but I was not sure. A few days later I asked around town and a friend of mine actually knew about the train and who was working on it. He told me he would look into it. A few weeks later he called and told me it was going to start up very soon and would I be available to record on short notice. Of course I said “Oh yeah, I can be ready at a moments notice!”

Locomotive HD Mini

The train beasts rise again! Close up and distant recordings of freight trains passing through the beautiful spaces of North Idaho. Distant train horns echoing in the night and huge pulsing engines pulling heavy cargo along the rusty tracks make up this collection of trains to compliment the original North County Trains sound library released in 2011.

Five years ago I spent the entire year running around the county recording trains. The result of my efforts was North Country Trains which I released in late 2011. I learned a lot about the best places to record and the best times of the year. Along with nearly being arrested I spent countless hours sitting and waiting in locations ranging from wide open fields to dense forests to the local train depot. For this collection I used that experience and knowledge to record even more of the massive diesel beasts as they rumbled through the area without waiting forever to capture the moment.

I learned that with all the trains (70+) that pass through here everyday, there is a certain pattern to the criss crossing madness. I would listen and wait for the times when I heard lots of trains from the south which meant trains from the North were waiting patiently before crossing the lake. Just one set of tracks cross the lake and a bottleneck is almost daily. Other trains come from the West on a separate rail system and they have to wait also. When they get the go ahead the North South trains are waiting. These “stop and go” train situations create the perfect opportunity to get slack take-up metal impacts along with slow starts and passes.

One of the aspects of train sounds that I love the most around here is the way that the horn echoes and bounces between the valleys and the mountain ranges. On a quiet day or evening it’s a stunning sound and can go on for what seems like forever. Another is the way the wheels scrape and squeal against the rails when a train is on a curved set of tracks. It can be abrasive and yet at times it’s strangely musical.

The Dust In His Bones

Ok - so this sound is a standard blue bottle house fly. 

I was around the house recording, trying to capture some good water sounds and this fly was all over the recordings, so I gave up and pointed the shotgun mic at him. 

The sound is comprised of short bursts of fly movement as I was poking him with the blimp, he was on the window, so I kept disturbing him. Unfortunately I was unable to capture a clean fly away sound. So the one included is the best I could do.

Recorded using the Marantz PMD661 - Rode NTG3 mic. 

24bit 96kHz mono file - so should be able to get crazy with the pitching etc.

Fly - buzzing

I love sound. I love to record sounds and I love to create sounds. Sound design and audio for film and video game is my passion and driving force for all the sounds you will hear on here.

This year I made a new years resolution to record and release a sound effect every week for the entire year. These sound effects will be posted here for you to download and enjoy in any commercial project, royalty free. I do own the copyright for these sound effects and therefore this means that you are not allowed to put these on your website for the sole purpose of download or sale. So please bare that in mind.

There is no theme to these sounds, I wanted to keep it random, this in turn has led to me recording sounds that I would not have usually considered. So expect...... anything.

I also post some sound design work on here too. So please, have a listen and enjoy.
