HopeStreet Recordings and Zillanova are proud to present a brand new vocal soul 45 starring two of Melbourne’s finest: Cisco Tavares and Jess Harlen. Two very distinct sides showcase the amazing talents of these two guest vocalists as well as the production and songwriting skills of HopeStreet impresarios Bob Knob and Tom Martin and the heavy duty sounds of The Zillanova Rhythm Combination.

On the A side – Cisco sings Suicide. Sweet, sweet sadness shimmers over low slung syncopation and builds to a climactic peak before dropping back to the whisper from which it came. It’s a story of collective rather than individual suicide. Something to tap our toes to while we watch the human race run headlong for self destruction. Do we care? Sure. Enough to change our ways? It seems unlikely. What’s Going On? You might ask, as Marvin once did. Truth is no one knows, or has, or will.

On the flip, Maori/Australian mistress of neo soul magic Jess Harlen gets down but plays it cool over a rocky rhythm track that owes as much to Led Zeppelin as it does to the Meters. The Time It Takes is a song about that moment in a relationship when one person has given all they can and still doesn’t know where they stand. Ouch. It’s a familiar story but delivered with the unshakeable conviction we’ve come to expect from Miss Harlen, the old tale takes on new life.

Zillanova is a studio based project led by bassist and producer Bob Knob. The Zillanova Rhythm Combination, the mighty rhythm section behind hiphoppers Illzilla and Bollywood heart starters The Bombay Royale are joined by reggae don Jake Savona on organ, San Lazaro’s Sebastian Orellana on percussion and The Bombay Royale horn section. Recorded and mixed by Bob Knob and Tristan Ludowyk at the Hope Street Studios in Brunswick, this record is a family affair for the HopeStreet crew. Many hands make light work apparently, but this record is super heavy regardless.

It’s soul music, baby, but not as we know it. The backbeat and the handclaps are still there and the horns still sound. The bass bumps, the organ screams and the guitars still twang, but the singer has left the room. Everything is shades of blue. This is soul music for the after hours. For the solitary dancers and the lonely hearts. The soundtrack to solitary headlights on a midnight highway. What to call it? Who cares! Can you dance to it? Just try not to. No one’s telling you to throw your hands up in the air, but no one would be surprised if you did. It’s dark here, so you can do your own thing.

Wooden Boy was recorded by The Cactus Channel -- a ten piece band from Melbourne, Australia -- all born in the 90s and raised on the internet. Yet somehow, this astonishing follow up to last year's rave-reviewed debut, Haptics, sounds like it could have been recorded in the 1970s, or possibly in the distant future. A timeless, placeless cinematic odyssey, Wooden Boy could have been an alternate soundtrack to Ghost Dog -- if Lalo Schifrin and the Meters were collaborating on the RZA's score. Or maybe Wooden Boy was what happened when Lars Von Trier got invited to direct an episode of Soul Train. What any of it may actually mean is left to the listener's imagination.

Funk aficionados will hear shades of New York on this record, echoes of El Michel’s taking on Wu Tang, the influence of Budos and Menehan et al. But this is the Generation Z version; both more tempestuous and more introverted. Recorded analog in the digital era, presented faceless in the celebrity era, inexplicably ambiguous in the soundbite era, is this the album the world needs right now? Undoubtedly yes. In a world where the NSA can read the text message that dumped you, what does a person need more than sad soul music from the future? Wooden Boy, baby, Wooden Boy.

This festive urban trance was dreamt up between Oran and Marseille by the Watcha Clan, American MC Raashan Ahmad and the Algerian rappers from T.O.X.

In 2006, Marseille’s globetrotting Watcha Clan spent time in Wahran, where they worked with local rappers Fada Vex and Machine Gun from T.o.X. In 2012, they continued in the same vein by bringing in MC Raashan Ahmad, a founding member of the Crown City Rockers, from San Francisco Bay Area. This led to texts in French, English, Arabic and Hebrew – acoustic rap to the sound of Eastern string instruments. This is Hip Hop for sure but also Afro Step and Desert Blues, 1h of pure energy and fresh vibes.
The project MARSEILLE 2013: In 2012, Marseille-Provence 2013 launched five nomadic artist residencies bringing together musicians from cities with symbolic ties to rap and newly independent venues in the Arab world. This blend of hip-hop, electro chaabi, brass band, human beatboxes and flow by Marseille, Arab and North American rappers has led to five original creations. In March 2013, project participants will travel to Marseille and Aix-en-Provence to continue work begun in Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria. The creations produced at these residencies will be presented to the public at the Théâtre du Bois de l’Aune and the Babel Med Music festival at the Dock des Suds, where a stage will be set aside for new sounds from the Mediterranean and beyond. Alongside artistic residencies and concerts there will be filmed jam sessions in unexpected venues, mix-tapes, meetings, featured performances and a film on the making of the project by journalist Hind Meddeb.

Grant Phabao's list of remixes is becoming months after months quite a treat, and we keep on feeding him with cool big hitters a cappelas to work his skank and dub magic on. George Clinton, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, AC/DC (!), Q-Tip and Cee-Lo all got their proper rework, offered for free in remixed form, here on Paris DJs. BUT Q-Tip got the exclusive Grant Phabao treatment twice and we didn't want Erykah Badu (one of the most wonderful American voices of our time) to be jealous, so here's a second reggae take on a track from the New AmErykah Part.1 album. As usual, our friend and neighbour Erik Rug tells us he successfully tested the track on the floor and 100 percent supports the roots Jamaican vibe coupled with the heavy boombastic production skills from the french dubmeister.

Rockin' Robin is a 1958 song by Bobby Day. The single was Day's only hit single, becoming a No. 2 Billboard Hot 100 hit. The song was covered by The Hollies on their first album in 1964 and would be revived as a single again in 1972 by the teenaged Michael Jackson as his second single release on Motown. Jackson took his version to number two on the U.S. pop singles chart that year. The french dubmeister Grant Phabao pays here his due tribute to the king of pop, with a reggae remix of this pop/rhythm and blues cover of a fifties song - rockin' the dancehall and burnin' one for the man!

The Macintosh and its Finder application were revolutionnary for the way we create. Then one day Napster happened, soon followed by AudioGalaxy and many others. While the big music business was struggling with the limit of its ecosystem and the paradigm that had come with the use of mp3 files, Steve Jobs changed the way we consumed music with the iPod and the iTunes music store. Soon after that, he changed the way we consume information with the iPhone.

"The iPhone Connection" song is a tribute to the co-founder and CEO of Apple who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer this summer.
It was recorded at Paris DJs studios just a few days before Steve Jobs passed away.
Jamaican DJ The Lone Ranger is on vocal duties with French dubmeister Grant Phabao at the controls & playing all instruments.

The Lone Ranger is one of Jamaica's most influential early dancehall DJs. He was twice voted N°1 deejay on the island, in 1979 and 1980. He helped pioneer a newly rhythmic, on-the-beat rhyming style that led DJ toasting into the modern age, and punctuated his lyrics with bizarre exclamations and sound effects ("bim" and "ribbit" were his favorites) that made him perhaps the most imaginative stylist of his time.
He had originally recorded The Walkman Connection way back in 1984 (on "DJ Daddy" / Techniques), now fully updated to 2011 as The Iphone Connection ! This is not a remix of Steve Jobs' speeches or commercials, we did it our way, creating an original and uplifting song.

Bad Girls (Switch Remix) [feat. Missy Elliott & Rye Rye]

Veteran rub-a-dub singer, Carlton Livingston started his career in Jamaica in the 1970s in sound systems with legendary deejay The Lone Ranger. He started recording for Channel One Records in 1978 and soon went to Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label, releasing hits such as "Why", "Here I Stand" and "Predictions". His first album, "Soweto", was produced by Lone Ranger's friends Leon Symoie and Chester Symoie and their Thrillseekers label in 1979. The early 80s were a productive period for him, with big singles like "Mr DJ", "Cuss Rasta" (for U Brown's label), "Trodding", "Tricks" (for Sly and Robbie's Taxi label), "Rumors", "Marie" and "Confusion" (for Clive Jarrett's Dynamite Records).

In 1983 Clive Jarrett produces his second album, "Trodding Through The Jungle", recorded at Channel One. Carlton then moves to the US and in 1984 releases on Greensleeves the famous "100 Weight Of Collie Weed" single and album of the same name, produced by Percy Chin & Hyman Wright. He never stopped touring and recording since, and is always in demand for one of his killer dubplates. In 2004 The Lone Ranger introduces him to his crew, from France, the international music web agency T.I.M.E.C. and their unbeatable production duo - Grant Phabao recording a 100 new riddims in 4 years and Djouls gathering hundreds of thousands of visitors each month on their website www.parisdjs.com (launched with former Radio Nova programmer Loik Dury). Grant Phabao, The Lone Ranger and Carlton Livingston decide to join forces and produce together with T.I.M.E.C. their future recordings.

Things start with a bang when they release in 2006 a limited edition 12 inch, a cover of Dandy Livingston "(A Message To You) Rudie", made famous by The Specials. The single was a hit, played all over the world and sold out in a few weeks. Carlton went to to record more than 60 dubplates (!) on Grant Phabao's incredibly sounding "Rudie" riddim. The firt single, "Teenager In Love", a reggae/doo wop take on the Dion and the Belmonts hit from the 60s (written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman), was recorded during the same sessions as "Rudie", in November 2004 at T.I.M.E.C. studios in Paris with Grant Phabao at the controls AND producing the riddims. Two other tracks were recorded then, "Cry Tribulation" and "Running for my Life", the latter being licensed by french filmmaker Cedric Klapish for his 2008 hit movie "Paris".

Following the success of the riddim single, Carlton comes back to Paris and T.I.M.E.C. studios in december 2006 and records 4 new tracks with Grant Phabao, "Bridge of Life", "Cherry" (on the riddim used for Ty's rework of "Don't Watch That" on Big Dada/Paris DJs), "Still Lamenting" and "Heard It Before". He would be back in march and april 2008 to re-record "Still Lamenting" to a higher standard, and record new songs "The Life of a Don", "Jackie's Statement", "Could Be Bitter" and the counter-anthem "(Sing) Power To The People".

Grant Phabao presents Carlton Livingston - "Bridge of Life" is the resulting album assembled from those sessions in Paris. Grant Phabao plays all instruments (with the help of keyboard wizard Soul Sugar, formerly from Seven Dub). He produced, polished and mastered himself the 11 tracks, along with three other full length albums (!), for respectively The Lone Ranger, The Silvertones and The Jays, an astounding vocal trio with former members of Black Uhuru, The Royals or The Chantells...

The single "Teenager In Love" is as sweet as Carlton's soulful reggae can be. It's another instant classic you'll have to hunt down: pressed in Jamaica and released by T.I.M.E.C., it's only available as a 100 copies limited edition 45 - available at the Superfly Records store - so act fast or cry later!

Veteran rub-a-dub singer, Carlton Livingston started his career in Jamaica in the 1970s in sound systems with legendary deejay The Lone Ranger. He started recording for Channel One Records in 1978 and soon went to Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label, releasing hits such as "Why", "Here I Stand" and "Predictions". His first album, "Soweto", was produced by Lone Ranger's friends Leon Symoie and Chester Symoie and their Thrillseekers label in 1979. The early 80s were a productive period for him, with big singles like "Mr DJ", "Cuss Rasta" (for U Brown's label), "Trodding", "Tricks" (for Sly and Robbie's Taxi label), "Rumors", "Marie" and "Confusion" (for Clive Jarrett's Dynamite Records).

In 1983 Clive Jarrett produces his second album, "Trodding Through The Jungle", recorded at Channel One. Carlton then moves to the US and in 1984 releases on Greensleeves the famous "100 Weight Of Collie Weed" single and album of the same name, produced by Percy Chin & Hyman Wright. He never stopped touring and recording since, and is always in demand for one of his killer dubplates.
